I'm a lover of both screen and stage musicals. I have been in many musicals throught my teenage years, and now have a great appreciation and love for them. Are you a fan of musicals? If so, what musicals do you like, and why?

Many of the musicals I like are due to me performing in, watching or studying them...

The Wiz
The Wizard Of Oz
Chicago
Moulin Rouge
Les Miserables
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Secret Garden
Grease
We Will Rock You

Haha Musicals are such a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm going to group them by my favorite musical films and favorite musicals on stage

Film
- The Sound of Music
- Meet Me in St. Louis
- The Music Man
- Hello, Dolly!
- Moulin Rouge
- Tommy (don't get too technical on me here)

Stage
- Ragtime
- Showboat
- My Fair Lady
- The Music Man
- Chicago

I've never been much of a fan of the musical - something about expressing everything in song can grate on me after a while (I think this was why I could never get into The Music Man - stage or film).

That being said, I have to give props to My Fair Lady and Ragtime. And I must profess my unabashed love for The Sound of Music.

And if Amy can include Tommy, I get to include The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. :)

My Fair Lady is on Turner Classics this week. Excellent movie. Oliver (1968), which won Best Picture, is another classic. And good call on The Music Man. Robert Preston was an excellent Professor Hill.

I'm not a fan of film musicals, but I don't mind stage musicals! They are great to watch and even more fun to be in. In fact I played Seymour Krelborn in our school production of Little Shop of Horrors a few weeks ago.

Ah memories :)

Peace

heh.

...i was originally gonna come into this thread and say how i'm not really a fan of musicals, and that the only one that i could say i enjoyed was The Rocky Horror Picture Show but even then i was pretty drunk when i saw it so that probably had something to do with it. however (surprise surprise), i then read through peoples lists and was reminded that i love The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and Moulin Rouge.

...i guess for me it must be like if a movies truly great i automatically forget that its a musical ;) ...or to elaborate: i think it mainly has to do with the fact that i find the idea of people bursting out in song, in the middle of films, kitschy. obviously though, this doesn't always have to be the case :)

I am IN LOVE with "Singin' in the Rain". I had a big fat crush on Gene Kelly after I saw that for the first time... I still do.

I'm also a big fan of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". A largely ridiculous story, but it's very cute, and the dancing in the barn raising scene is fantastic.

I quite disliked "Moulin Rouge". Nicole's flat singing, Baz Luhrmann's style of directing, and cover songs just don't compare to the old musicals (even the dud ones). They had brilliant dancers and singers - my dear Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse (who has the longest legs ever), a very young and gorgeous Frank Sinatra...

I also like "Cannibal! The Musical". It's absurd, but I have a great time watching it.

tommy was the craziest thing ever...i was also on t3h marijuana. it made me look at the album differently..

Footlight Parade! Elaborate over the top Busby Berkeley dance sequences, James Cagney, New Deal propaganda, and awkward because they didn't even realize how racist they were being racism makes it far and away my favorite musical. Have you seen my Shanghai Lil? :D

Also, I really enjoy The Music Man thanks to ms. amorroark. :)
