Does anyone have any genres or bands that they used to detest but have grown to appreciate (maybe even love) ?
I've learned to appreciate broader ranges of music as I've gotten older. New Wave and Indie Rock are 2 genres that took me a while to get into to. Coming from a punk rock background, new wave used to seem too poppy for my tastes. And not just New Wave, most 80's music I couldn't get into. But now I love new wave, it's fun and danceable music (shit I love to dance.)
While I get that indie rock is a broad term, most of the music I heard seemed too mellow. The music itself seemed to lack energy. Especially compared to what I was into at the time. It took one band to change my whole perspective: Stereolab. Possibly due to their slight influence from electronic music. Now it's the genre I mostly listen to when I'm not listening to EDM.
Right now I'm starting to appreciate Phish. They seemed a bit boring when I first heard em but after a couple listens I have realized that these guys are good musicians. They took some elements from 2 genres I already like (jazz and funk) and put their own spin on it
