Wither it be through your parents, siblings, grandparents or other elders, what music were you introduced to early in life? Have your feelings about the music you were introduced to in childhood changed? And, how do you think this has effected your taste in music now?

(I just thought of this thread so I don't have time to respond right away as I think this will be a lengthy reply but I wanted to get it up before I forgot. :))

For me, it's not really about a certain singer or band or genre I was introduced to that influenced me. I listened to lots of stuff with my dad when I was little. Oldies, classic rock, reggae, country, blues, and so on. He really opened the door for me to have such a broad appreciation for music. And now, I turn him on to artists as much as he does me. It's great.

I remember being as young as four years old, putting on Dan Fogelberg's "The Innocent Age" on my parents' record player. I particularly loved the leadoff of side two, Lost In The Sun. I loved the driving beat, the sad melody, the chiming guitar, and the elegant lyricism. There's not much other Fogelberg I ever got into, but I still have a soft spot for that album (well, most of it).

I also remember wearing out a Beatles tape that my sister gave to me when I was five. I couldn't have told you any reason why I loved it - I just did, and that was that. :)

my parents listened to artists like tina turner and the pointer sisters when i was little. in fact, the pointer sisters were the first concert i ever, ever went to. i have some of their songs on my ipod, and when they come up on random they bring great memories back to me.

I hated it when I was little, but my dad ALWAYS had the Beatles on.

Maybe now I understand my love for quality music.:)

sepultura, aphex twin, grandmaster flash and the doors

i had a cool upbringing :D

Some of my parents fav's when I was a grasshopper:

Bee Gee's
The divinyls
Pink Floyd
Smokey
Credence
Proclaimers

I hated most of it.

I spent my teenage years listening to the likes of:

Live
Silverchair
Metallica
Rage Against The Machine
Cypress Hill
Eminem
System Of A Down

I'm not really into any of that stuff anymore, although I do still break out the old skool Metallica on occasion.

more to follow!

hehehe, the first tape I ever bought was Ice Cube's Death Certificate :D

I'll definitely come back to this thread, I'm studying right now ....

I used to play my parents Everly Brothers and Simon and Garfunkel records. They listened to a fair bit of crap, as well - but at least I got a love of classic, melodic pop songs from them.

(And later on I'd play their Dylan and Cash and Beatles records, so really, their collection wasn't too bad).

early years had to listein to my older sisters music from the 80's, like depeche mode, the cure, NIN, jane's addiction, red hot chili peppers, faith no more, love and rockets, REM, sex pistols, thats all i can recall right now,

middle years, guns n' roses, metallica

after middle years till now - gangsta rap, hip hop, dnb, electronica.

My parents in the late 70s had me listening to lots of classical music and instrumentals, The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, THE BEEGEES (omg everytime I hear How Deep is Your Love it reminds me of them!:p)Poco, America ,Mamas and the Papas, Billy Holiday, The Animals,Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Beatles,Donna Summer, Bread, and MANY MANY MANY others lol.

Than the early 80s kicked in and had me falling in love with post punk/new wave/new romantic/ eighties eighties eighties (till now!) et al such as soft cell, the police, the lotus eaters, the smiths, joy division, duranduran, dire straits, the cars, depeche mode, tears for fears, siouxsie and the banshees....ETC ETC

My folks never owned music and the only time they actually listened to it was in the car - even then it was just background noise. So I guess "classic hits" of the 50's & 60's were my first music memories.

I would love to read my children's reply to this in twenty years time because it's the opposite scenario - music is a huge part of my life and is played constantly in the house.

That sounds what it's like for me as well. My parents started taking me to concerts at the age of 4 (Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA tour) and I know that if we lived closer to each other I would still attend a lot of shows with them.

My dad and I feed off each other music wise and can talk about it for hours. I really feel lucky for that. :)

my parents always had a radio on and i remember hearing...
dean martin
nat king cole
perry como
frank sinatra
louie prima
and its funny i still remember the words to most their music...

I grew up on a lot of Beach Boys, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Led Zeppelin, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix. Lots of oldies and classic rock, basically. I went through phases where I hated a lot of the bands they listened to, but have come back around to appreciating most of them.

In grade school I listened to a lot of Guns N' Roses (my fave band in fifth grade), Metallica, Megadeth, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and a bunch of metal bands I can't recall the name of.

In my teens it was a lot more Pearl Jam, Green Day, Weezer, STP, Soul Coughing, Bush, No Doubt, DMB, Smashing Pumpkins, Belly, Live, Reel Big Fish. The latter half of high school hand me listening to a ton of punk rock like Pennywise, Bad Religion, NOFX, Unwritten Law (old stuff).

I have very diverse tastes and it's expanded outward rapidly since I pulled myself out of the early college "all Phish, all the time" phase.

My parents loved Motown records and we also had several Rolling STones albums as well as the soundtrack to Hair. I also heard the radio a lot and remember how I liked the Beatles, the STones, the Who, Led Zeppelan, Johnny Cash, Simon & Garfunkal, etc. I listened to it all! The Jackson 5 and the Osmonds, all the hits.

superb thread idea! music greatly effects our outlook on life and our changing perspectives as we age. imo kids who grow up "in" to music seem to have a tendency to become much more intelligable adults.

ill post later, this'll prolly take me a while...

My dad's side was the typical Italian family, so I was brough up on Frank Sinatra, and music artists like that. When i was a little girl, I remember listening to "Cisco Kid" by WAR, He loved WAR and pink floyd..things like that.
