My first adventure with mushrooms was an unexpected one, and one that has stayed with me until this day. It took place in perhaps the perfect tripping location, a chilled out music festival on new years eve, filled to the brim with peace loving souls..
The day had been a glorious one, full of life and energy, positive vibes all around as people floated through the festival seeing in the new year. There was an excitement in the air as it was just past 12:30 at night, and the countdown and celebration had just finished. We wandered the stalls, checking out various bands and artists, there was so much colour, so much life all around. It was truly a unique place to be, like i said, perfect!
Meandering through the twisty pathways I came across a friends brother, who could see I was already having a good time. We had consumed some quality pills earlier in the day, and now he asked if we really wanted to take a journey to see in the new year.
Of course I wanted to!
It wasn’t long and he was leading us back to his campsite where he apparently had a stack of freshly picked mushrooms from that morning.
The hills around this area are full of beautiful little psylocybin containing fungus, each morning the paddocks were full of like minded pickers, filling their pockets for the day ahead..
Once back to his camp he produced a huge newspaper wrapping full of beautiful little cubensis mushrooms. Carefully dividing them up between us, he handed them to me whilst assuring me “this will definitely be enough”…
I ate them down hastily, eagerly anticipating my first full blown mushroom trip. After all I had been a fan of Terence Mckenna’s for years, reading everything i could get my hands on. I could hardly wait to begin feeling the effects..
Luckily, it turned out I didn’t have to wait long at all! About 20 minutes or so later, sitting idly by his camp, a little nervous, just making small talk. My friend asked me if i was ok and said i was being a bit quiet.
To my total and utter surprise, I literally could not speak. It felt as if my face had fallen, dripped even, onto the ground below me. I tried to talk but nothing came out! My jaw and mouth were so tight and literally felt as if they were seeping below me, onto the ground...
I stood up quickly and walked away from the campground, still unable to say anything. Walking towards some toilets i spotted what i first thought was a dead body. I looked again..yup, still a dead body? I looked away and then back again quickly, hoping my mind would stop playing tricks on me. This time i went closer, warily i checked the pile and poked it with a stick…Ahhhhhh it was nothing more than a pile of rubbish, albeit in a strange spot to be sitting. It was around then that i knew the mushrooms had hit me, and hit me hard…
I went into the bathroom and looked at my eyes. I saw only saucers the size of a spaceship staring back at me, a stranger had somehow replaced the “self” i knew… I freaked myself out enough staring into that mirror and hastily ran out of the bathroom back towards my friends.
I could now speak again and simply exclaimed “Whoa”.
It had only been half an hour or so and things were rather intense already. My friend assured me to go with the flow and everything would be ok. I knew this to be the thing to do in these situations, so I didn’t fight it and suggested we head back into the festival.
Walking back along the trails i noticed the trees almost calling to me, playfully swaying in the breeze caught in some shimmeringly brilliant cosmic dance. Their pure organic beauty was overwhelming and i felt the deepest connection to the earth and all life that i had ever known. It was almost overwhelming to see such beauty, when suddenly the bright lights of the festival again came into view.
Walking through the gates we were greeted by a small man, “Namaste” he said as we walked past… How fitting i thought! Back through the gates everything took on a crazy carnival vibe, kind of like the circus scene in fear and loathing in las vegas. Everything just seemed very surreal, there were people dressed as ents walking around on stilts, others fire twirling, people putting on light shows in the water.. It was all a lot to take in but I was soaking it up, basking in every moment..
The night wore on and eventually we made our way back to camp, but not without one more lasting incident that left a real impact on me. Waiting outside a bathroom for my friend i looked at a tree, and strangely enough, it looked right back at me. This tree had taken on a face, carved out of wood, and was smiling right back at me…Something like this:
I went over to the tree to investigate and watched as its face morphed. I leaned against the tree, heard it breathing and instantly felt a deep empathy for this living wonder.
My friend stumbled out of the bathroom and found me there, practically hugging this tree, and asked me what i was doing… “Uhh, just..talking to this tree” I replied, matter of factly.
After that we journeyed back to camp, my friend went to bed, but i chose to venture elsewhere. High on a hill, i sat to watch as the sun rose over the mountains. It was one of the most uplifting experiences of my life, watching this life giving force rise up above us and showering everything with its glowing radiance. I almost cried at the sheer beauty of it all..
This whole trip had felt extremely organic and somehow connected with the earth, even moreso than my previous acid trips. I came away from it with a much greater respect and love for nature and all life than even before, something I didn’t even think was possible..
Mushrooms it seems, really are the Food of the Gods…
