Mushrooms and weight

Many psychonauts say the #1 rule of taking magic mushrooms is that you should always weigh your dose.

But..

If the active alkaloids are not determined by the mass of the mushroom, then wouldn't it make more sense to count your dose rather than weigh it?

Weighing your dose isn't neccisarily an exact science, but it is many times more accurate than simply counting caps and stems. I once ate an eighth consisting of 9 caps and 10 stems, that had me tripping as hard as an eighth i ate last night, consisting of 5 caps and 7 stems.

Edit: Wait a minute, shouldn't the number one rule of taking ANY drug be to weigh your dose?

At Least Psilocybe mushrooms won't kill you. 8o

i'm sorry, where did you get this information?

the active alkaloids are DEFINITELY determined by the mass of the mushroom!

are you saying that a single 1g mushroom will get you exactly as high as a single 0.1g mushroom of the same species?

um, no.

the only dispute on mushroom mass comes from the inexact science of "aborts" or "pins" that may be denser than mature caps, but that's a different discussion entirely, and is better suited for growing communities like mycotopia and shroomery.

WEIGH YOUR DRUGS! DO NOT EYEBALL DOSES!

science requires rigorous technique, and one of those techniques includes taking good notes and ensuring repeatability of an experiment.

Well....size doesn't matter as much as you think. A HUGE cube can contain only as much psilocybin as a smaller cube from the same batch!

Once the cap opens that's about as strong as it gets, beyond that point the psilocybin content doesn't really increase, the mushroom just gets bigger and you just eat more material.

In other words, 3g of nothing but HUGE caps won't be as strong as 3g of just opened smaller caps...been there done that, I won't even buy HUGE cubes.

Its not a bad idea to weigh your shrooms, but also be aware of just how many you are ingesting. Both are factors in estimating the strength of your dose. Also, species, grower, batch, and personal chemistry can effect the intensity of your experience. Generally, I suggest you start with a 1-1.5g and re-dose as necessary. If you want to go completely out of your head eat 3.5-7g. Since your experience will only last 4-6 hours (generally) its not as risky to re-dose with mushrooms as with LSD, or other long lasting psychedelics (unless you WANT to trip for 18-24 hours).

If you decide you want more body high eat more stems, more head high eat more caps. I have been told that there is no rational explanation for this, and that it must be a psychosomatic (placebo) response. However, I have seen people who don't handle body highs well throw up every time they eat stems, and never when they eat caps. Just something to consider. Be safe and enjoy!

Exactly, both are factors - small ones tend to be somewhat stronger than bulky ones gram for gram.

At the end of the day, every mushroom is different just like every batch is different. You can only try to make the best educated guess looking at the number of mushrooms and the weight but you might end up getting unpredicted results because you had very weak or very strong ones - Some mushrooms can be freakishly strong, I forgot how much stronger than the average one, maybe 5x or more even? Talking about Cubensis.

Anyway for Cubensis the number of mushrooms in a dose is usually about 1-4 anyway right? So I wouldn't say there is a huge difference.

Artic, I think that there is virtually no difference between stems and caps - but it IS true for Amanitas for instance.

There is a possibility got homogenize the effect from your mushrooms, if you have a good stash of dry ones (if fresh, dry them, you should anyway because you cant preserve fresh ones very long).

What you do is grind them into powder and mix the powder through and through. That way there is no difference anymore between one mushroom and the next, no caps/stems. It's a single batch now, and it will only differ batch to batch.
Then after a tryout you can make an estimation of the strength next time.

That is, if we forget about the rest of the set & setting story......... oh noes!
