Museings - Sleep and life expectency.

[QUOTe
It sounds harsh but being alive is different to living. You can have a dream that living for an extra 50 years is a blessing but I see it that you should enjoy your precious time then move on for the next person. I don't see the planet really being able to support a human population with zero deaths.[/QUOTE]

Maybe we could resort to the world of Soylent Green, the1973 American science fiction film . Where humans were recycled into food.

But seriously you have to question why sleep issues are increasingly becoming an issue for the population at large. Contrary to big pharmaceuticals solution of a pill for all ills the question has to be asked why aren’t people sleeping.

Benzo's decrease the amount of time you spend in the REM stage of sleep. Whilst they certainly increase the total sleep time, they don't really increase the amount of quality sleep time. It must be added that the purpose of REM sleep is still largely debated though.

As a race we are living more and more stressful/busy lifestyles. Sleep has been put on the back burner in modern times and not seen as the priority that it really is.

The average person now only sleeps for some 6hrs on a weeknight, this figure was much higher in years gone by.

People are just too busy in modern day society. Our day seems shorter, schedules are crammed and precious sleep hours are sacrificed... tossing, turning or working.

I know that when I was working 12-14 hour days for a long period of time I was happy to get 5 hours sleep a night let alone 6!

I'm sure that working all week coupled with drug fueled partying all weekend is common to many of us. Even if it has shortened my later life, I've had fun :)

Food for thought
Sleep less, live longer?

I don't think it would be unreasonable for the standard retirement age to rise to 70 rather than 65. There should also be incentives for the healthy aged to continue working if they want to. Mandatory retirement should become a thing of the past. If one is wealthy enough at 55 to retire, then so be it. That's just the way of the world: that some will be better off financially than others.

While it was unusual for my parents generation to reach 90, I don't think the younger generation (45 and younger, particularly 30 and younger) will find it unusual to reach their 90s or even 100s...I'm sure the average age in the Western world could easily exceed 85-88, rather than today's 78-81ish. Easily five to seven years more of active life.

Oh definitly. By todays standards 85-90 is plausable. Imagine future standards - 100+. And who's to say we'd be senile, IMO dementia will be a thing of the past.

I've seen those studies which suggest that sleeping too little, as well as too much, seems to lead to lower life expectancy.

I think this is one area where you should be really careful not to confuse correlation with causation. I think the actual amount of sleep you get matters far less than the reasons someone is sleeping too much or too little. Therefore just artificially increasing (or decreasing) the amount of hours you get probably wouldn't have as a direct influence as you might think.

Personally though, I think taking stimulants make you live longer, because it's when you're awake you're doing your real living, so for actual, conscious 'living' time, I'm beating everybody ;)
