Hey everyone. I am interested in any information (either in terms of pharmacology or experiences) that anyone has regarding potential interactions between muscimol (or Amanita muscara mushrooms in general) and other GABA agonists- specifically phenibut, (but I doubt there is much out there on the specific interaction, so really any GABA agonists would be of interest). Being that muscimol seems to derive most of its effects via the GABA system unlike many other psychedelics, I am curious as to whether the introduction of a separate GABA agonist would reduce its action (e.g. as I understand it, benzodiazepines are often used to lessen the intensity of 5ht-2a based hallucinogenic effects), or rather synergize/intensify it in some way. Any information is welcome. Thanks!

Well, musicmol acts at GABA(A) and Phenibut acts at GABA(B). There would likely be a synergism of sedative effects. My guess would be that's the only real interaction that would occur, but I don't know. Someone else may know more.

A GABAa PAM would likely, I think, potentiate muscimol, as muscimol is selective for the orthosteric site on GABAa (excluding its GABAc/GABAa-rho activity), so amplifying the response from an orthosteric agonist via means of potentiation at an allosteric site, surely should cause an increase in the activity of, and possibly a qualitative alteration in activity.

I assumed it would do.

Potentiation generally includes side effects after all, at least, if done in a direct pharmacological manner, as opposed to say, considering opioid induced itching.

Haven't noticed much respiratory depression with Amanita use though, oddly.

Muscimol always seemed subjectively rather similar to the Z-drugs to me (i.e. zolpidem, zopiclone, zaleplon). The same mix of mildy euphoric sedation and psychedelic effects, just muscimol is more psychedelic and less sedating.

So I would expect combining these to be synergistic for both the positive effects (i.e. sedation and psychedelia) but also since they share the same negative effects like respiratory depression, nausea and amnesia these would be enhanced as well.

Its a pity gaboxadol never made it to market as that seems likely to be a cleaner pharmaceutical version of muscimol, and I wonder how the effects compare.
