Multivitamins really necessary?

Also I think it's bullshit that it's expensive to eat fruit and veg.
Could you elaborate ?
It's much, much cheaper to base your diet on cheap carb sources like grains, beans, pasta, and processed food items than to base it on healthier items.

Vegetables and fruits are not terribly expensive I agree, but their inclusion in a diet tends to make that diet more costly.

i think that if it is a priority, then its possible, for most people who are posting on a computer that they own, to incorporate some form of fruit and veg into their diet.

its a fatalistic attitude to say "well i can't afford to eat healthy, so i'll just eat processed junk all the time"

Couldn't have said it any better. I was homeless due to my shitheadedness as a teenager and I was still able to eat a balance diet. Hell I'm still able to do it now comfortably and I probably make the usual dead end job money that every 22 year old makes. Just have to prioritize what is important. The cliche fits this situation perfectly. "Being fit isn't a hobby, its a lifestyle"

Thanks for making this thread I was wondering the same thing.

I took multi-vitamins for years, as well as eating a diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables, and fish so I'm not sure if they are worth taking or not? I've seen arguments for both sides about how you should take one, and how you should not take them.

I don't buy expensive ones I get a large bottle at a whole-sale store and it lasts for a long time if I take them.

the keyword here is "necessary" and nope they arent. you can use them as a tool to supplement your diet.

There's a pretty strong case against multivitamins, but many of the studies that show no significant benefit are poorly done.

If you're eating enough veggies and fruits, there's absolutely no need for multivitamins.

This. Precisely.

My ex-father-in-law was an MD and said "all vitamins do is give you expensive pee."

I am paring back, but I used to take a multivitamin, C, D, E, glucosamine, turmeric, ginger, omega 3, milk thistle, probiotic, collagen (both types), and probably some others I've forgotten. I was taking some of them for ligament/joint issues and some just b/c I read that those are the ones to take. I now think it's crap though. I've been taking the stuff for my joints and ligaments for over a year and they don't feel any better. The ginger I only need when I have an upset stomach.

I'm trying to eat more whole food consisting of mostly fruits and veg but sometimes I fall off. I'll just make better choices next time.

That's what I meant when I made this thread... Is it necessary if you have a good diet. I haven't taken a multi in some time but I do still take fish oil, vitamin d and vitamin e. Both the vitamin d and e are per doctor's recommendation.

I was only told to take Centrum Silver bc I'm on a mood stabilizer. Apparently the psych drug can make hair fall out, not a lot but some, and was told that would help.

I think if you have a good diet you'll be getting all the vitamins and nutrients you need.

I'm currently back on a healthy diet and take fish oil and vitamin d. I take a multi too but I'm wondering if it's even necessary. Thoughts?

I'm not going to read the rest of this thread, so ill just answer directly.

Put simply, no, if you have a reasonably healthy diet. You don't need and at best will experience no benefit from a multivitamin. A multivitamins only useful purpose is if you eat a poor diet deficient in what you need, and aren't willing or for whatever reason are unable to switch to a better diet. In that case it might be better than not having one, but it's not the ideal solution.

What I think a lot of people don't realize is that nutty is also extremely physically active and optimum nutrition for fitness in comparison to the everyday sedentary individual is radically different. In every approach.....
