Moving from Seattle

Hey all,

I want to leave Seattle by September, but am having a difficult time deciding where to move. I would really like to go some place warm, as I am not a fan of the Seattle weather, or the really hot monday then the thunderstorms on tuesday. My ideal place would be California, but I have lived in California on my own before and it was just too expensive. Florida seems nice, but also not at the same time. Humidity is not my friend, and all the people in Florida that I have talk to aren't incredibly fond of it, but I'm sure a great deal of people love it. I've also heard its in the top 3 for most unemployed.

Since I like warm weather, someone suggested Texas, but I just can't get the image of 'western towns' and desserts out of my mind. Maybe someone from Texas can replace those images! (although I hear the drugs are cheap and the rent is cheap! ;) )

I don't necessarily care about 'city life' I just want to be able to find stuff to do, and be around people my age(20)

I don't have any major expenses. I earn about 1k a month from internet advertising, but still(obviously) plan on getting a full time job. I am just aiming for an average non-degree-required job(e.g best buy)

Any information would help!
 
you dont like humidity but you want warm weather? seems like the desert would be your best option. albuquerque, phoenix, santa fe, even vegas seem like beter options than texas or cali. if you do consider texas austin is of course the only accepatable option.
 
Vegas could be legit...but I've heard horror stories about people getting caught with drugs. Like, isn't it if you're under 21 and you get caught with even just less than an oz of bud its a felony?

I didn't even think about Arizona, don't know why...And why only Austin? Not Houston?

just talking out of my ass im afraid. never spent any time in texas. i've had friends who have lived in austin and rated it pretty well- very good music scene, lots of young people, good size.... kinda like living in the northwest but with warmer weather i'd imagine.
 
i would agree, austin is pretty fun city. university of texas is there, so there are tons of people in their early 20's.

i am guessing you are not attending college, but living near one usually means cheap rent, lots of young people and stuff to do every night.
 
Thank you both for your responses. I've been looking into Austin a lot on citydata and some other places, it seems like a nice alternative. That would be my #1 choice now, but we will see how I feel once I'm done researching.
 
i would check out craigslist for whatever cities you are thinking of to get a good idea of rental properties and such. and jobs too.

if you move to college town, be aware that the begining of a school year brings an influx of new students looking for housing and jobs.
 
I've been doing that, and also checking out the personals section(platonic lol) to get a real idea of what kind of people there are.
 
lol, i am not sure how accurate of a cross section the platonics section of the personals is. the best way to get a feel for a town is to take a couple day trip there and explore it.
 
Problem with that is the plane ticket alone is 400-500 round trip in July--August is probably cheaper, but would need to try it out asap in order to start planning. Keep in mind thats not including taxi from the airport, or hotel. A 3-4 day trip could easily run as high as 700-800.

Where as with a roommate, you could easily get an apartment for $350-400 a month. (shared houses/apartments on craigslist go for about $400)

So would it be worth it for a 3 day trip? Or to just go there for a couple months and see how I like it for the same price? Obviously food and other bills would be a factor, but even if I went for just a month, it would be half of what the 3-4 day vacation would be. I can always come back or try a new place. Hell, I could even leave after a week if I hated it, still cheaper.

P.S. If I did end up moving there for a month test run I'd drive there. So the plane ticket wouldn't hurt my pockets so much.
 
^^honestly visiting a city for 3 days is going to tell you fuck all about it... you'll learn more online imo. if you have the stones and the dollars to just pick up and move jump in for a couple of months... you're young enough and it seems as though you'll have some steady income, whats the worst that could happen;) also, prepare for disappointment; you're leaving one of the best parts of the country;)

i disagree, i have visited some cities and realized within a day or two that it is not somewhere i would like to live. LA is a good example, i love visiting friends there but there i would not want to move there.
 
^^that strategy may work for knowing where you DONT want to live but not so much where you do want to live... if that makes any sense.
