LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Movie theater owners faced with falling attendance are considering asking federal authorities for permission to jam cell phone reception in an attempt to stop annoying conversations during films, the head of the industry's trade group said on Tuesday.

Industry leaders at the ShoWest conference for theater owners want to find ways to win back crowds.

"I don't know what's going on with consumers that they have to talk on phones in the middle of theaters," John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theater Owners, told the ShoWest conference in Las Vegas.

Theaters are trying a number of ways to silence cell phones, from sweeps by ushers to funny fake movie trailers urging viewers to shut off phones.

Fithian said owners were considering other steps if that does not work.

"We will actually petition the Federal Communications (Commission) to remove the block" on jamming cell phones, he said.

That may be difficult, since federal law and FCC rules prohibit the use of cell phone jammers.

The industry is broadly trying to increase interest in the movies.

Motion Picture Association of America Chief Executive Dan Glickman told ShoWest that the industry is researching why and when people go to the movies and might consider an advertising campaign to encourage people to go out to the movies, just as the milk industry has succeeded with its Got Milk? campaign.

Maybe the answer to poor movie attendance is, um, better movies or the ridiculous price of admission?

it should be noted that theater owners are only asking to use the jammers at this point.

i think it is unlikely that federal authorities will let them, given how much people love their cell phones and given the power of the telecommunications industry.

Frankly, i think most restaurants and definately all theaters... i'd say the same for libraries too.. should block cell phone usage.

I think babies shouldn't be allowed in a theater, even with parental consent.. or even being present if the movie isn't a G rated movie either.

You want me to pay that kind of money for a movie, make it worth my while.

#1. Please, give me a damned decent movie that's not a remake, no cliche, and not a gimmick
#2. Cell phones -- OUT!
#3. No stupid fucken bratty kids crying or acting up

The past few movies I've seen, they always run a little reminder to turn cell phones OFF. I'm very conscious of this so I turn mine off on the way into the threatre. They need to make stricter rules on bringing kids into the theatre too.

Now if they could only jam Tom Cruise movies...

I notice a good many people are very respectful with their cell phones, as am i. And i respect and appreciate that.

problem is i feel, enough people are not respectful to the point i think it warrants this type of action.

I'm a person who would rather pirate a movie offline...even if the sound and video quality isn't that great... than tolerate people on their cell phones, babies and kids acting up, and certain grown people that don't know how to shut up when the lights dim.

No shit. When was the last time you thought to yourself "Man, I'd really like to go see a movie but i'm scared someone's cel might ring"? :\

^I haven't really thought that, but in a theatre when I hear someone's cell phone ring--even worse, they answer--I definitely consider punching them in the face.

1. I've been in a cinema when some guy's phone rang.
2. He answered it.
3. The huge man sat behind him (about 3 rows in front of me) asked him to turn it off or finish his conversation outside.
4. Asshole with a cell phone vocally (and rudely) disagreed.
5. Huge man punched him.

The punch was better than the film.

ok... first off they have 'reel moms'. this is (i think) an AMC thing that lets moms and dads bring small kids to the theater and see 'grown up' movies without being stuck at home or disturbing other non parent patrons. the shows are a weekday morning.
good idea.
it is only once a week and is only one movie at a time which you dont get a choice of... but otherwise pretty neat.
use it people, if you can. i understand it discludes a good number of parents since many work but if you bitch enough to AMC or whomever i bet they could add in just one theater in the muliplex a saturday/sunday morning showing, especially in a metro area.

cell phones are another story. pain in my butt, and it isnt even the ringing or conversations that annoy me. it is the stupid flickering blue lights all over the theater while the owners feverishly type texts to all their stupid little friends.
really- two hours is not that much to give up and be out of touch.
remember what it was like in 1995 when not every one over the age of eight had a cell phone? when you would leave the house and *gasp* not every one in the world could find you via electronic leash?
horror!

DD is right, i would have bought him one.
and what ridiculous price of tickets? i would pay 12.50$ just to see that.

Oh Christ, I miss those days. :(

For the record though, I seriously doubt cell phones are causing a decline in movie attendance. I think it's a combination of:

1.) Easily-ripped movies.
2.) Chintzy matinee discounts, and ridiculous full-price tickets.
3.) More and more previews.
4.) More and more fucking commercials. Remember when you could leave your TV at home?
5.) Even more shitty movies, and sequels of remakes of sequels.

There is a theater that my husband and I refuse to go to on Friday and Saturday nights because it's always full of obnoxious high school kids.

I don't think the solution is to block cell phone acess for everyone. The solution is for the theaters to tell patrons they will be kicked out without a refund if they disrupt the movie (excessive talking, cell phone use, etc.) and that children under age 3 aren't allowed in any movies. Then they have to actually enforce those policies.

I used to work at a movie theater, so I was spoiled and got to see all my movies for free. Now that they're so damn expensive I rarely go. If I do go, I get so pissed when a screaming child or some asshole talking ruins it for me. One time I was seeing a movie and there were about 4 women behind me jabbering in a foreign language. I turned around and asked them to be quiet, to which they responded by laughing and mocking me. I left the theater, found a manager and got them kicked out. Missing part of my movie was definitely worth seeing the smirks wiped off their faces when they were escorted out. Ha ha ha, I'm such a bitch but I really get PISSED when people are so blatanly inconsiderate. :D

I too worked in a movie theater, and wish I could see a movie before everyone else, smoke a cig, drink a beer, and not half to worry about bullshit. Some movie theaters in bigger cities don't allow kids after a certain hour, which should be policy even in small towns.

BTW, if you want to see someone get punched in the face, just go to any movie theater in the shitty part of town on a Friday night, esp. if an R-rated movie is releasing that night. It never fails.

Why the hell should they penalize people who dont fuckin have their ringers on and dont talk in the theater?

What if i have my shit on vibrate, and when i get a call, if its a important call, i leave the theater?

What if someone is one of them surgeon-on-call type workers and they need their shit on at all times, no matter where they go? They are normal people too, it aint like they dont go to the movies.

its fuckni ridiculous. another example of the shitty behavior of some people fuckin it up for the rest of us.

i never talked on a celly in a theater in my life, but i keep my shit on, incase i get a call that i really need to answer, then i can text them back if i need to (silently, no beeps or noise on my phone) or leave if i really gotta talk to them

But for fuckin real man....stupid shit...*shakin my head*

side note: dont go to any movie theater in a ghetto or hood area if its like that.

"DONT GO IN THERE!"

"THAT BITCH IS FINNNNNE!"

"NO BITCH NO, HES IN THE BASEMENT!!!"

Lol

It dont really bother me unless i cant hear anything but i go to the movies like once a year if that cuz it costs too much so it dont matter

But your post made me laugh thinking about that :)

i might actually start going to movies more often if they did this.

Wow looks like I was dead wrong with my earlier remark.

So people seriously don't go to movies because they're apprehensive about someone's cel ringing? Seems weird to me. I can't ever remember ever hearing a cel phone ring in a movie theatre more than once or twice.

At any rate, I can't fathom how on earth the government would ever allow this. Churches [weddings], funeral parlors, courtrooms .... those are the types of places that I can see a legitimate reason to employ cel jammers.

A fucking movie theatre? Give me a break! :p

I don't know where you go to movies at, but it's a big problem. I don't want to hear some stupid conversation when i'm trying to enjoy a movie. And people on their cell phones tend to talk way loud so the person on the other end can hear them. It's ridiculous, but people have no consideration for others.

How can the government block it? What law does it violate? it's private property.
