I only voted on the films I really like, or am very familiar with. I left out voting on the ones I haven't seen in years and have only hazy memories of. Or films I haven't even seen at all. So here's what I went for. :)

American Beauty over Apocalypse Now Redux
requiem for a dream over Amelie
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegasover A Clockwork Orange
fight club over Fargo
Platoon over The Big Lebowski
Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind over Beetlejuice
Casino over Goodfellas
The Breakfast Club over 2001 A Space Odyssey
Shawshank redemption over Dr Strangelove
Adaptation over Schindler's List

if you have not seem them all, can you skip the ones you havent without messing up the poll?

edit:yes

American Beauty (8) vs. Apocalypse Now Redux (25)
The fucked up back story alone clinches it.

Agreed.

fight club (5) vs. Fargo (28)
Both exceptionally well made and exceptionally disturbing films with elements of black comedy. But Fargo has better acting and writing. Fight Club is slicker. Tough choice.

What went thru my mind was:
Fargo - black comedy, yes. good acting, yes. But I only walked away 'entertained' for a bit.
FC - some black humour, yes, but not as much. good acting, mostly...as I think Pitt's character was alright, but Norton tickled me. And in the end, I walked away thinking about the film and it's statements long after I left the theater.

Winner: FC

Goodfellas (7) vs. Casino (26)
Wtf? These are the same movie.

LOL....exactly my thoughts.

Man Fargo is incredible, but I gotta go with Fight Club.

Damn that was hard, I need a cig.

12 Monkeys (14) vs. Full Metal Jacket (19)
Shawshank redemption (6) vs. Dr Strangelove (27)
Adaptation (11) vs. Schindler's List (22)

the only ones i had to really think about were the godfather/office space and fight club/fargo. i'm happy i chose the ones i chose, and if you didn't, well... you are wrong and it sucks to be you. ;)

Next round I'll wait until felix posts his votes, so I can counter everyone of them and effectively nullify his participation. <3

Is there a final tally list of final nominations available? I'm curious how Casino and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (one of my favs btw) made it when I counted only 3 noms each for them in the nomination thread.

BTW I'm really happy about the people who didn't vote on movies they didn't see. That seems unfair to me. Good on you, you guys!

the spreadsheet i used to tally the nominations is at work - i'm away for the next 4 days but i'll post the list when i get back. many movies got only one nomination so 3 was enough to get them into the top 32.

alasdair

I think it's more fun if you add an explanation.

Trainspotting (1) vs. Gladiator (32)
Easy choice. Gladiator is a classic example of flash over substance.

American Beauty (8) vs. Apocalypse Now Redux (25)
The fucked up back story alone clinches it.

requiem for a dream (9) vs. Amelie (24)
Requiem for a dream gets overhyped on this site. Amelie was sweet and bizarre, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet gets a bonus point for his body of work.

The Godfather (13) vs. Office Space (20)
No explanation needed.

fight club (5) vs. Fargo (28)
Both exceptionally well made and exceptionally disturbing films with elements of black comedy. But Fargo has better acting and writing. Fight Club is slicker. Tough choice.

The Big Lebowski (12) vs. Platoon (21)
They are both mediocre over hyped films in my opinion, but I've never really liked Oliver Stone's style.

Beetlejuice (15) vs. eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (18)
Michael Keaton acting insane and cool set designs are nice, but a Charlie Kaufman script is a thing of immaculate beauty. And in this case, expertly executed by a director who was completely on the same level.

Goodfellas (7) vs. Casino (26)
Wtf? These are the same movie.

Adaptation (11) vs. Schindler's List (22)
Loved the writing in Adaptation, but Schindler's List is one of the most perfectly made films I've ever seen.

true true true.<3

Trainspotting (1) vs. Gladiator (32) -both well made, but trainspotting is an infinitely better story
Chinatown (16) vs. Contact (17) -while polanski is classic, i enjoy zemeckis' work here immensely. the most re-watchable film i know, despite the cheese.
American Beauty (8) vs. Apocalypse Now Redux (25) quaintness vs epic classic is not really a contest
requiem for a dream (9) vs. Amelie (24) - amelie got old for me pretty quickly whereas RFAD is brutal metal which i still enjoy
A Clockwork Orange (4) vs. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (29) -love gilliam's work, but against kubrick's work? i think not
The Godfather (13) vs. Office Space (20) - love them both respectfully but still, LOL
fight club (5) vs. Fargo (28) - tough pick. both great works of art. i nod slightly more towards fincher's best work for its depth
The Big Lebowski (12) vs. Platoon (21) - i love the former and i like the latter.
Pulp Fiction (2) vs. Forrest Gump (31) - tough call, but PF has a special place for me.
Beetlejuice (15) vs. eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (18) - no competition.
Goodfellas (7) vs. Casino (26) - if goodfellas was a coke high, casino is the comedown
2001 A Space Odyssey (10) vs. The Breakfast Club (23) - my brain explodes with overstimulation due to a complete and utter overload of reasons for this choice
The Matrix (3) vs. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (30) - i vote for the one i'm in, of coure. :p
12 Monkeys (14) vs. Full Metal Jacket (19) - the second most rewatchable film i know vs kubrick's weakest work (still great tho).
Shawshank redemption (6) vs. Dr Strangelove (27) - 10 vs 10, but i rather laugh than cry
Adaptation (11) vs. Schindler's List (22) - adaptation has a great story by a great writer and it's told well by a good director. schindlers is spielberg's best, most complete work.

The most difficult choices for me:

Shawshank redemption (6) vs. Dr Strangelove (27)
Adaptation (11) vs. Schindler's List (22)

yeah totally. these made me choke a bit.

Trainspotting (1) vs. Gladiator (32) - not really a competition for me. Gladiator is rewatchable but I don't think it's at all on the same level as Trainspotting.

Chinatown (16) vs. Contact (17) - Um, I sorta hated Contact. I don't even know why everyone in this forum loves it so much. I found the actors super annoying & had a really cheesy plot. On the other hand I loved Chinatown. Most people I know seem to not have seen it. Tis a shame.

American Beauty (8) vs. Apocalypse Now Redux (25) - I really liked both movies, a lot. Apocalypse Now is classic though. I might vote the other way in 10 years. This one was close.

requiem for a dream (9) vs. Amelie (24) - Amelie was so playful and beautiful. I loved the message. I loved the direction. I've seen both films several times. I can safely say I don't need to see Requiem ever again but I'll actively seek out seeing Amelie again.

A Clockwork Orange (4) vs. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (29) - I really enjoyed both immensely. This was a tough call artistically. This was just a personal preference call TBH.

The Godfather (13) vs. Office Space (20) - Office Space has great rewatchable value (I've probably seen it 10x) but The Godfather is (unquestionably to me) in the top 10 films ever made.

fight club (5) vs. Fargo (28) - Coen Bros. almost always win any contest for me. Plus, as I previously said I really don't like Palahniuk as an author. The actors in both of the films were top notch. Fargo is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite Coen film so it wins.

The Big Lebowski (12) vs. Platoon (21) - See above.

Pulp Fiction (2) vs. Forrest Gump (31) - lol, not a contest for me. Forrest Gump was a blockbuster and a cute story but not much more than that to me. Typical Disney 'epic' drama. Pulp Fiction changed the way I watched movies.

Beetlejuice (15) vs. eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (18) - Beetlejuice is a pretty good Tim Burton film. That said, I don't like Tim Burton very much. TBH his recent work has probably tainted my view of Beetlejuice (sad). ESOTSM is one of the best & most beautiful portrayals of realistic relationships. I'd be questionable of a person who has been in serious relationship(s) & didn't relate on a deep level with it.

Goodfellas (7) vs. Casino (26) - Do I even need to explain.

2001 A Space Odyssey (10) vs. The Breakfast Club (23) - TBC is a feel-good high school flick... and that's about it to me. 2001 is an epic work of art.

The Matrix (3) vs. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (30) - I would normally put FBDO in this in the same category as TBC but I (mostly) grew up in Chicago & went to college in the inner-city. The Matrix was good, and I can rewatch it, but it sort of lost the magic after the 2nd time.

12 Monkeys (14) vs. Full Metal Jacket (19) - I didn't even like 12 Monkeys. Full Metal Jacket was awesome... even if just for the first 1/2 of the film.

Shawshank redemption (6) vs. Dr Strangelove (27) - SO TOUGH. Shawshank is definitely one of the most appealing movies ever made & crafts the story beautifully. However, Dr. Strangelove is absolutely terrifying & hilarious to me. I'm a sort of person Dr. Strangelove really appeals to... dark, black & white, apocalyptic-themed.

Adaptation (11) vs. Schindler's List (22)[/QUOTE] - Another really tough one. Schindler's List is a film *everybody* should see. I believe The Pianist is a better Holocaust film... but they don't really need to 'compete' with each other... anyway, Adaptation is on my personal Top 5. It just really spoke to me. I find the acting superb, the plot tremendously clever, & like Strangelove both extremely serious & funny at the same time.

"Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction"

lol.

It's happened before. :(

I could watch Pulp Fiction for the 143rd time right now, pick up at any point during the movie, and I wouldn't, for a minute, so much as consider changing the channel - entertaining as hell, well-written, changed the game, the world's best director EVER (at his peak), imo, AT HIS PEAK.

Truly invneted a new genre - maybe the most INFLUENTIAL film I've ever seen.

Pulp is my second favorite movie ever, just behind the film which I HOPE PEOPLE WILL RE-WATCH - because, imo, everyone in the world would be emotionally healthier if they watched it every single calendar year (at least).

Also, Shawshank actually ages phenomenally - it gets better and we learn more nuances upon each and every viewing, and further, Freeman's acting was the best I've ever seen by anyone not named DeNiro, and it's UNQUESTIONABLY the movie that displays genuine friendship best. </end this SHAWSHANK Pimp!>
