As some of you may be able to tell, I'm pretty spontaneous with things. I make my mind up and commit very quickly, but not today!
Been thinking today about getting rid of my yzf1040 thunderace with the engine I've built up for it etc and replacing it with an XT660 (the motocross looking one not the super moto or Paris Dakar looking thing)
There's loads of trails near me I'd love to explore but can I deal with having a slow ass bike on the roads?

What's your opinions on these sorts of bikes?

Wank. Get a fuckin Trumpeet ;)

Or an HD as a Very last resort ;)

Don't forget:

If you ride Jap, yer crap.
If you ride Yank, yer wank.
If you dont ride Brit, yer shit!
(And if the sparks aren't flying, yer not trying ;) )

Well, I'm biased, but here's my opinion.

Get rid of the crotch rocket. Forget about an XT660 which is only useful for off-road stuff and is useless and slow on the road.

You are a man of means. Get yourself something like a BMW R1200GS Adventure. Or something cheaper (like mine), a Suzuki V-Strom, in either 650 or 1000 variants.

Best of all possible worlds. Fast enough to satisfy most bikers in most road conditions in most environments. Fit the luggage and tour Europe two up no problem. Go to the shops (with the top box) and get the beers in. Commute to work in all weathers. Take off the luggage and explore forest trails and farm tracks and do a bit of light offroading.

Travel the world.

Like I said, get a trumpeet...

(Top boxes? Luggage? A couple of army surplus backpacks strapped together and slung over yer pilion seat is more than adequate. Otherwise get a cage... ;)

This was my thoughts BUT apparently you can happily sit at 80 on the standard gearing without feeling like your ragging the arse out of it? I think I will need to test one first and see if this is actually true!
Surely them bmws must be ridiculously heavy?
To be honest I don't do much riding I've become a fair weather pansy which I always said I wouldn't become so won't be doing much commuting as I prefer the comforts of my car these days ?
Looking at them V-stroms, you wouldn't be able to get any even remotely close to off-road tyres by the looks of things?
I would like a WR450 as I used to race a YZF450 but realistically think it would Fall apart with any road riding!

Shut up with yer old-skool nonsense. :p :D

You would fucking hate an XT660 if it was your only bike. I guarantee it. It would feel like riding a 125 to you.

Of course you should test ride a few different bikes. There are many other options in the dual-sport/big trailie category, like the Triumph Tiger, Kawasaki Versys, or the BMW F800GS.

Go for a ride on one those and figure out what's best for you. All of these bikes come with a huge range of accessories and bolt-ons (e.g. a lower seat if you're a short arse ;)) and they're definitely not too heavy for anyone who's passed their bike test. ;)

If you ever feel the full weight of your bike, you've fucked up.

Haha I just meant heavy for low speed traily stuffs.
Yeh I like all the accessories that are available for these types of bikes I can bling it up to match my diamontè phone case and vajazzle ??
I'm going to have to ride a few I guess although they all seem the same 'type' there's a lot of variety!

I missed your edit:

Of course you can. I'm a long-time member of several V-Strom communities with people from all over the world, and I can guarantee you can fit knobblies and go anywhere you want.

This isn't the place to research a motorbike purchase, if you're serious about it.

I am serious about changing my bike and just wanted a few opinions. I'd I don't like whatever I buy I'll just change it again. ?

Don't buy an XT for what you describe.

I'd go with something like a 2006 KTM 300 EXC and get myself a nice road bike with the change, say a 1999 VFR.

That's the best of both worlds.

^ Sound advice. (As was mine. ;))

Aye, FUBAR, away and count the "extra" nuts and bolts you've got lying about in your garage. :D

Hehe. One of these days, I'll recover the bar end nut that's currently hiding somewhere in my handlebars. :D

bitd i had an xt 500 which i traded in for an xt250 as the 500 just made me pop wheelies every time i pulled away - plus i was on tippy toes when stopped and im 5 11'. But i loved them bikes fast and nimble and v loud - just wat you need in london ; )

Only room for 1 bike and had a 300 2 stroke last year road legal, absolutely fucking terrible for anything more than 2 miles at a time on the road. I mean REALLY shit 55-60mph and you felt like you was ragging the arse out of it then off-road they're too powerful for any thing twisty. I definitely want a 4t again. Makes me wonder how I used to race my kx500s! ?

Talking of handlebars - I bought a triumph chopper off some cunt, and he'd drilled the bars to run the cables through. It all looked very nice until one day the handlebars snapped in my hand because the daft twat had made the holes too big, thus weakening them so much they couldn't take the stress. Luckily, I was only manoeuvring the bike out of a tight spot - but I'd pulled the ton many a time with those same piss weak bars...

Why the fuck would you run cables through handlebars??? :D

Typical chopper vanity, style over substance. Haha.
