What is the single most important thing you've learned in your life thus far?

Just tell me ONE thing/concept; Thank you

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take

Everything I'm doing that I doubt or think serves no purpose always ends up having meaning in hindsight. (Everything happens for a reason.)

to avoid all the cliches and classics, to a truly personal epiphane...

there is a monster in my heart of hearts, who will resort to all kinds of unthinkable horror, if certain things take place in certain orders.

i noticed a very disturbing impulse in a situation a few years back which had triggered my defender of the family animalist instincts. clearly i didn't act on it, and the situation quickly passed, but it was really surprising and enlightening to know that it is there.

That our civilization is inherently flawed, isn't worth saving, and therefore don't strive to fix it/work hard in trying to better society. 'You can't polish a turd' is probably the summation of my learning.

That life as such is not worth living, and that humanity (and, by extension, all life) is best perceived not as a transcendent nor a particularly meaningful cosmic enterprise, but rather as a monstrous serpent that devours only itself. The burning wheel of samsara catapults us forever onward into oblivion, with no faithful steward tending the light at the end of the tunnel, and with no redemption in sight.

That, in the final analysis, suffering is the true name of this despicable game, and the few precious moments of beauty and mutual solidarity that we are afforded in this life are but brief respites from the interminable nightmare of an existence carved out of the suffering of untold billions of biological progenitors, all of them wallowing in the same cesspit of unfathomable torment punctuated by brief intervals of sustaining pleasure lest they lose their will to survive, let alone the desire to reproduce more of their wretched kind.

That we are "cursed, cursed again and like we have been continually, and we'll wind up dead this way, knowing very little and getting that little fragment wrong too.”

Drugs are a waste of time.

Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.

That reality is in no way contingent on your perception/belief/acknowledgemment of it. If you step off a cliff, you will fall to your death regardless if you reject the notion of gravity or if you think you are immortal.

That there is no meaning or point to life beyond my own ability to imagine it;

I find this both infuriating and hysterical depending on my mood..

Interesting to hear your thoughts PA. I think we can agree on this topic =D

Whilst under the influence of an exorbitant quantity of booze and hallucinogenic drugs, I imagine myself loudly dictating Arthur Schopenhauer's On the Suffering of the World to the tune of "Never Gonna Give You Up."

Hey, at least there's something. :\

I think its interesting to note overall the majority of peoples responses are quite pessimistic...

I would get all technical and say you can't begin to decide what is and is not important because you did not specify who it was important to... but im in a good mood today, so i'll begin.

I value many things that i've learned, everything i've learned has made me who i am today. I think it's important that i learned to embrace solitude instead of wallowing in loneliness. Learning to embrace pain as much as i would pleasure. Learning to be humble and unopinionated. I learned that everyone, and i mean everyone, at heart, is a cold, selfish, asshole/bitch(depending on your sex and sexual preference). Learning how to operate this body efficiently was quite important, as was learning how to use technology. Learning about bluelight may have saved my life a time or two. Learning to forgive was important, as was learning to trust and learn. Learning about sex and drugs was quite pivotal in my life and i love who i am... so i suppose any knowledge that contributes to who i am and my survival should belong on this list being that they were the most important and so the list could go on forever but im not gonna do that so this is where this ends.
