Haha, from what i gather he had some balls to dress in the way he did in that area. All gothed up with make up and all iirc. The whole of the 5 minutes i spent there was enough to realise that the place was very hostile to anyone at all 'different' in any way.

Did you ever watch Benefits Street? St James Turner Street has nothing on Openshawe. And Miles Platting is even worse than Openshawe. The so called "notorious" Moss Side feels like a middle class gentrified utopia in comparison. In fact it was once the place where the rich residents of Manchester lived. I think it became notorious as part of the Gunchester happenings in the 80s with the Gooch Close gang and all that. Gooch Close is now a quiet and peacefull housing estate that feels quite safe and un-threataning, at least during the day time.

This thread makes me glad to have grown up surrounded by old/rich (sometimes both) people. The only place I've ever felt vaguely stabby vibes was Brixton at midnight on the way back from a gig, fortunately the train station isn't too far from o2 academy. Looking back I can't believe my parents let me go up to London on my own as a 16 year old, fuck. Maybe I'm so small that they thought I was more unnoticeable than vulnerable. Or maybe I really do look like a total 'ard nut.

Brixton's stabbiness is vastly inflated by racism. Brixton is barely stabby at all. I lived there for four years and had not one jot of trouble. And yes, the distance from the Academy (fuck the O2 bit) to the tube is like 200 yards at most, nowhere near enough to feel threatening other than by (racist) reputation. I lived all over London in the twenty years I lived there and Brixton was by far the best place I lived, and I lived pretty much bang in the centre.

I've walked back from the Academy and the Fridge severely spangled on more occasions than I care to remember. Never once felt anything other than brilliant. Certainly not threatened.

Well, you say that but... the second time I went there I was walking back under the archway bit to get to the other side of the station and I shit you not, there was this beefy looking guy following me so I did my speedy walking thing until I got to the stairs, where fortunately there were some other people so he vanished again. Pretty much the only time I've felt slightly dodgy on my own at night, I'm not a paranoid person at all, in fact I'm probably much less cautious than I should be so I know I wasn't imagining it. I am a 5ft 4, 8 stone white girl though so probably the catergory of person most likely to feel/actually be threatened on their own.

Sure Brixton would be fine in the daytime but any inner city place at night is a bit risky isn't it. I know I'm lucky to have avoided any real trouble but to some extent I think if you act confident/feel like you'll be alright then you do tend to be. More so than if you're twitchy as fuck and constantly looking around at least.

as for the least aggy town, my girlfriend is from Harrogate originally and she seems a bit sheltered, sounds really safe there.

Agreed. I've gotten so used to living in an area where there is always someone about that I now feel more on edge is places that are completely dead at night. Sure there's crime in the area but that's true of everywhere, I definitely would never describe the vibe as stabby.
