Moshing at dance events - what do you reckon?

Little back story: I've attended a couple of drumnbass, dubstep, electronic music nights, and at almost all of these events people tend to dance in their own space and keep themselves to themselves - they're loving the music, they're in a great place, and they're doing their own thing. People don't tend to dance together because the pace of the music makes that difficult.

At my most recent outing (UKF Bass Culture @ Alexandra Palace), from the beginning of the night to the end, there were moshpits everywhere. And I can't quite get my head round them: why would you want to hurl your body weight as hard as you can into other people? Or be suddenly shoved in some direction? What part of this is adding to your experience of the night?

Anyone else note find this ritual pretty weird? Or am I missing something wonderful about sweaty mosh pits?

when Borgore was dropping Slayer tracks there was definately a ketamine fuelled mosh pit

Here in NY, when Hardcore is played it's usually accompanied by moshing. I can understand if it's for Hardcore, but anything less I just laugh at the stupidity of it.

Angerfist did a USA tour last year in January. A ton of people were moshing, the whole dance floor was. Danny later went on to say NY had the wildest and craziest pit of the entire tour and he gives his respect.

I don't think it should really be frowned upon, it's just another form of expressing yourself with the music. As long as you're not directly hurting anyone, I see no harm.

Didn't understand the concept til I went to Bangface in England.

It's called BANGFACE for a reason...but they call them MASH PITS

At a festival in the summer in ireland I first encountered mosh pits at a chase and status set and pendulum... To be honest, throughout the 4 days the most fun I had was in those mosh pits, theirs something magical about them.
I find it amazing that it is so physical and seems violent but at the same time, people are not trying to actually hurt each other, they have an unwritten ettiquette... One of these rules is - if someone falls, primary concern is getting them back up and out of the pit if nessecery.
Moshing isn't just a form of violence, its a way to release anger, agression and energy In a controlled manner and I must say it is EXTREMELY fun.
If you havnt tried it, give it a go just to see what its like

Perhaps it's just too reminiscent of some cringe-worthy memories. I recall back to being school age, and being at gigs, or just anywhere there was live music, and the less socially capable members of the crowd's faces would light up, and they'd start a mosh pit. From the massive grins on their faces and the way their eyes met, it was like "Hey yeah! We're doing this thing that people do to music! Alright cool!".

And when I see people do it now, that's all I see. "Hey I'm loving this tune, but the only way I can show you is if I just push this geezer next to me really hard, check this out! Oh noo I got pushed back, ha, here we go again!" etc etc.

Am I the only one?

Just as us Americans laugh our asses off at 'Hakken'. What a pitiful form of dancing that is!
Oh boy did I hit a sensitive nerve or something? lol'd the fuck does it matter

i'm all for freeparties

FREETEKNO :D:D:D

I've been wanting to take the ferry to go rave my ass of in the UK but it hasn't come to that yet. Tekno is pretty lively here in Belgium/netherlnds aswell

Not at all, lol. Personally moshing is kinda stupid, but I see no reason people can't do it. It's a form of expression. Just like Hakken. Both are equal, really. I just find one more amusing then the other. :D

If people want to mosh that's fine, been to plenty of Industrial Strength parties in my day so i'm used to it. As long as they respect others and stay away from people that are dancing it's all good. With that said, If anyone pushes or knocks into me or my wife and it's not an accident they are going to get clocked in the face, i don't care if they think they are moshing :D

I keep my moshing at a metal show..
I dont really get why there would be moshing at these kinda shows, but Ill have you know Ive came outta some electronica shows more banged up than any metal show :p
Its kinda the same reaction I get when people crowd surf at a rap show, Im just like WTF?! keep that for the speed fueled electronica shows!
In the end I just let people have there fun, unless its at a venue/event where I wanna join in!

And I agree with lugog, I ALWAYS get elbows up to block for girls trying to push by to the bath room if theres a mosh pit.
likewise helping people up if they fall in an intense chest-to back-to chest packed club.
Its common courtesy and daft fuckers deserved to be clocked!
