I went through about 110 mg of xanax in the last 28 days (dumb, I know), and am all out. Before this I hadn't really used benzos at all so I guess I'm just looking for some insight on what I have to look forward to for the next however long while I am in w/d.

Another question will I even get w/d? I've been taking no more than 1 mg/day for the last 6 days in preparation of me running out. Tomorrow will be my first day off of them.

I'm hoping the w/d won't be very severe since I abused for a small amount of time? Or it will be because I blew through such a large amount of the medication?

I appreciate your time guys!

It could go either way...no one can tell you for sure.

You waited 11 months to make one post?

I don't really visit the site too often, but to answer your question yeah :)

I tried to do some math.. I was basically taking an average of 5 mg/day for 20 or so days, then the last week i've been taking .5mg - 1 mg. I would think I wouldn't risk siezures or anything like that coming off the lower dose i've been on for a week?

I'm not a benzo expert, (more of an enthusiast) but I've used them plenty over the years.

I had a situation a while back much like yours.

120mg of alprazolam over a 35 day period. I had no seizures, no horrible withdrawal symptoms. I did have intense insomnia for 2 weeks, but that was about it.

I can't say whether your experience will be similar, but I thought I'd share mine as they are similar.

There are so many conflicting reports about this subject matter, but I would be prepared for some degree of unpleasantness regardless of whether it occurs or not.

This is your first time using benzos in any significant way (or at all so it seems). I say you SHOULD be lucky enough that you'll probably just find sleeping quite difficult and maybe some anxiety you're not used to, probably lasting 3-7 days. I don't think you'll have too serious of withdrawals as 1mg a day is currently holding you over fine, you have probably ended the binge just in time before things really get out of hand.

Good luck, it shouldn't be too bad! :)

I'm guessing you're going to be going through a bit of withdrawal because of the amount of days that you consecutively took alprazolam. Benzo w/d isn't very fun, maybe you could get ahold of something to taper yourself down with?

Like I said in my first post, no one can tell you for sure, some people have an easy time coming off long-term use benzos and some people have a hard time with short-use. Really only time will tell...

However, the most acute symptoms of Xanax withdrawal happen within 2-3 days because of its half-life, since you dosed for 6 days at 1mg, if you were fine then I'd say you are going to be fine. Expect maybe some insomnia and increased anxiety, and make sure not to make this a habit :)

VERY RARELY people will get severe withdrawal symptoms from short-term use such as yours, but you would of been feeling them already when you dropped to 1mg imo...

tl;dr - I think you'll be fine

I'm going to try and update this thread over the next week or two so at least maybe something useful can be found if someone does a search in the future.

thelung: I'm sure I could, but the bottom line is I just don't really trust myself to taper off. I'd probably just party with them.

I got over 2 years of opiate abuse about nine months ago, I knew what I was getting myself into when I got the xanax. I feel as if things are starting to come together for me a little more and I just want away from pills in general and also to get these w/d's over with. I can't think of a more opportune time, or a more inopportune time to stop if that makes any sense.

How long does it take a person to start feeling benzo withdrawal? I remember when I was doing OC if I didn't have my fix first thing in the AM I was hurting (granted, that was a much larger and ongoing habit). I'm close to 24 hours away from my last dose and the only thing I feel is "not high". The only anxiety I've had so far is anxiety I've been giving myself thinking about what is to come. I guess the true test comes tonight.

Edit: Thanks nervousone, I had this all typed out and forgot to press submit. You answered many of my questions in the meantime.

If I can't get any sleep should I take some melatonin/valerian and tylenol PM? I remember when I was kicking opiates and I would try this it would just make me feel even more exhausted but I still wouldn't be able to fall asleep.

Thanks again for the feedback you all! Wish me luck.

Agreed. A month long binge isn't a drop in the bucket, so to say, but it is nothing to scoff at. I'm fairly sure you're going to be extremely uncomfortable on day 1 without xanax... but due to the crappy feeling that is not comparable to opiate WD's, logic should kick in and tell you that taking another xanax to cure the WD's woud be a very, very bad idea. Basically, you realize right then and there that the xanax has screwed with your brain.

I'm not going to lie to you...it's kind of scary, as you will notice what most call "brain zaps", harmless, but extremely uncomfortable. I guess they are the pre-cursors to seizures and a seizure is what you'll get if you quit benzos cold turkey after 6 months+ or so of daily use. Don't get me wrong, a 30 day binge is very unlikely to contribute to a seizure upon cessation of the drug. but you will realize(if you're wise and able to learn from your mistakes) that xanax is a "dirty" drug and somewhat akin to a poison, imo. No, it 'aint going to kill you by itself at the recommended dose, or even 20* the recommended dose(unless combined with another downer, then you're playing with a forest fire...but I'm sure you know all about the dangers associated with poly-drug abuse that includes benzos).

IMO, you will be perfectly fine by day 3 or 4...but those 3 or 4 days WILL MAKE you realize that benzos should be saved for special occasions, and special occasions only. I'll never use three days in a row, simply because of what I experienced after a 12 day binge. Sitting in bed, trying to force myself to sleep was the scariest part, imo, as I believe I could actually feel the brain working to create the chemicals that had been depleted during my binge. And of course I was lucky to get more than an hour of sleep at a time during those 3-4 days. Quite simply, it sucked....hard....very hard. It makes me ill just to think about..and that was after 12 FRIGGIN DAYS!

Again, this experience was a real eye-opener for me, and unlike any other WD I've been through. I told myself never again, and I meant it...in fact it was a walk in the park to follow through with this pledge, and I'm 100% sure I'll never abuse benzos again. Opiate WD compared to benzo WD? Lets just say that I'd take a 100 day heroin habit(snorted) WD over a ten day xanax WD, and it isn't even close. You know you're going to be fine during the midst of heroin hell, but I was seriously worred about my brain/nerves during the benzo WD.

You will be fine, but don't play around with a taper at this point in time. You will feel like shit, but a taper isn't necessary given a 30 day binge. Just pay the piper, curl up into a ball, and tell yourself never again...hell, you wont have to tell yourself that, as the voices in your head will be singing it!

Sorry if I've scared you, but I'm sure you know I'm not BS'ing you. There are certain OTC drugs you can take that will give you a bit of comfort(UTSE and you will find what you need). You'll be fine mate...just relax and take a chill pil....errr...nap.
