Awesome tool, the monome 40h. ordering a kit, I think between my father and i we can build it. They charge 600-100 for those re sold.... its quite powerful. I have noi soldering skills, my dad has decent.. think we can pull it off together in a month working on it 3 hours a week?

Time to brush up on your soldering skills. To be honest that doesn't look too bad at all just so long as there isn't any surface mount soldering; which looks like it's all thru-hole soldering so you're good.

CS,

Buy a decent soldering iron, something around 25 watts or so but don't go crazy high cuz then you'll cook your components. I think I got a decent kit at home depot for like $16.
Also in case you fuck up somewhere (there's always a fuck-up regardless of who's doing it, still happens to me here and there. Go to radio shack or somewhere similar and find a desoldering iron. Looks like this:

^ I couldn't tell ya how many times I've been saved by that thing. Don't cheap out and buy the plastic solder suckers (they blow ass)

Also when working with components on the pcb (circuit board) these are nice to have also and like the desoldering iron, fairly inexpensive. Is one of these "Helping Hands"

You and your old man should be able to complete that in one night, two days at most.

Note:

Be super mindful about which way those chips are inserted. If they're inserted opposite of the way they're supposed to be; once power is supplied via USB, you can cook 'em. Take your time, don't get frustrated

pm if you've any questions

I'd like to add:

Man, either building from a kit or building off of schematics will give you a sense of accomplishment that'll blow your mind. Really.

I almost look at it as something like breathing life into a machine:D

I get off on it.......

*edit*
I'm wondering if all of those soft-touch buttons are already pre-wired, possibly to a harness that connects to the pcb? Probably so......lemme know when you get it.

Have you already played one? I read that the buttons' trigger action is different than an MPC/APC style pad/button b/c it triggers upon the button's release instead of the press. I've never played one but let me know if that's true.

I talked to someone who had NEVER soldered a thing before and they took their time and in 5 hours got it done completely. It will cost 250 dollars with a decent housing kit... so it looks about the same as the pictures. Thanks for the advice slef. They are selling them for 500 dollars. They are sold out in almost every model, they have MUCH bigger ones. If I am successful with one, I will eventually make another one since ive seen two hooked up together and it is quite impressive. It will be at least a month before I take on the project though. I am definitely doing it though.

Are you gonna just use it with Ableton or get into max with it? That program gets wicked deep...... way more than the Max for Live version.

ok the sets are sold out, none will be available for a long time.. just gonna get an cheaper ableton launchpad and rig it to be a monome.

awww fuck.......so you're not getting it? I was excited.......but whatever works for ya, man.

Wasn't aware you're able to use Automap with the Launchpad. I remember when I had my remote sl zero; Automap made things a complete breeze when when working with vsts etc. They cornered the market with that shit.

I've been wanting to buy one of these for a while as well, I love to play around on the monome! These kits also interest me a lot because i would one day like to build modulars/synths/controllers and other electronic musical components. there are some kits I would like to get to build a 303 and an 808 as well.

x0xb0x and midibox 808?

looking into these myself atm

^and to add to the above; there's a cat doing rack mount tr-909 clones. I'm jonesing hard for one of these

.....or I'll just pick up a 909 outright come tax return time.

those are the ones, Ive also been looking at stuff like this: http://www.doepfer.de/DIY_Synth_e.htm

hopefully I will make it out to NAMM this year and see what else is out there. I just recently started going back to school to become a sound engineer and eventually I would like to build and design controllers/mods/synths.

^Have you built anything as of yet? There's a plethora of schematics over here. That's my go-to board for builds; one of them anyway.

never built anything functional, screwed around with programing some light boards and have used Max 5 to build virtual controls. I don't quite trust my electrical skills to be risking putting things together wrong. I should be taking some classes soon so that I better understand what I'm actually doing. then I will get to ordering my kits.
