A group of women has a special Mother’s Day message to everyone — legalize marijuana.

The national Women’s Marijuana Movement urges mothers to support the legalization of marijuana. The women behind the movement stress that whether or not you use marijuana, the fight against it causes families to break apart and wastes government resources. Most of them say they do not smoke marijuana, but they find it insane to put those who do behind bars.

Advocates say that if students were given the legal option to use marijuana, they would choose it over heavy alcohol drinking or abuse of other drugs, which may lead to the reduction of incidences of campus violence. The movement is associated with Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER), the national marijuana organization promoting marijuana as a safer alternative to alcohol, prescription drugs and other substances.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, the group is offering e-cards that can be sent to mothers to inform them that marijuana is a far safer alternative to alcohol and other drugs and probably encourage them to join the cause too. The Mother’s Day message starts by thanking moms for raising good kids, proceeds to saying why marijuana should be legal, and ends with a link to the book “Marijuana is Safer: So Why Are We Driving People to Drink?”

Do you think mothers should support this cause?

You go girls!

I think arguments like "marijuana is safer than alcohol" and "prohibition destroys families" are better than the "generating revenue through taxation" argument. Especially when trying to reach a demographic such as concerned mothers.

there are so many good reasons to legalize that I don't think you can pick a single one as the best. instead, aim discussion points at the person you are trying to convince. in the case of mothers, safety usually trumps taxation.

That's America for ya: a concerned mothers group for every single cause. I guess to get the media momentum it's necessary

@Dank Jenkum loving your name =D

I agree. Mothers may not LIKE their kids smoking marijuana, but I think they would feel a lot worse about having their child taken into a dangerous prison than they would about finding a joint in their underwear drawer.

Drug laws hurt families and those who put non violent users in prison should be ashamed of themselves. They are not just hurting individuals, they are hurting families.

Of course, if drug use results in bad behavior, like not feeding your children or changing them, or you driver under the influence and you dont have good balance.....take those fuckers to prison.

Responsible part time recreational users should be left alone, and serious addicts need in patient rehab more than mandatory minimum sentencing.

A prison sentence for not changing your children's diapers/nappies?
Sounds a bit extreme to me.
(Depending on the severity, of course - if you left the same dirty diaper on your child for six months, say, then I might agree that a prison term would be appropriate.)

I think if you leave them in a dirty diaper for 2-3 days that is serious neglect. If you go 24 hours without feeding them, thats neglect.

I am not talking about leaving them in a wet diaper for 12 hours while you are running a long day of errands and off to prison you go....I am talking about being too strung out to change or feed your child for a full 24 hour period...just leaving them there crying, hungry, cold, wet, getting a rash....thats neglect. Anyone who does that should get the shit kicked out of them. Its a form of abuse.

I believe in abolishing all victimless crimes. Neglecting your child is not a victimless crime.

I am talking about extreme examples though....like just leaving an infant alone in a room with no care for a full day...not just missing a feeding or going half a day in the same diaper.

But if you either have a baby sitter or you are just getting mildly stoned, or have at least one sober partner and you are not behaving foolishly or dangerously....if the childs needs are being met then leave the parents alone.

I think a '6 month' limit is kind of ridiculous. I am assuming that is hyperbole. After 3 days the child will have a severe rash and possibly an infection, especially if she is a girl. After only 12 hours of not eating and infant will have serious pain and low blood sugar. If I witnessed somebody too high to get up and feed their children when they are screaming, I would kick their ass and carry the child out of the home myself.

We agree :)

But yeah, I didnt mean to imply that mild diaper rash should = 5 years in prison. I am talking about parents who really neglect their kids.

As a parent though, I would MUCH rather see my daughter turn out to be a pot head and be left alone for it than to see the police think they are doing someone a favor by arresting her and subjecting her to the dangers of prison gangs, separating her from her family and impeding her ability to succeed in life....where is the justice in that?
