I know i'm probably going to get flamed as shit for this post, labeled a hipster, or something....but please try to stay open-minded.

I've been thinking about this a lot, in the 60's when the HIPPIES came out (hippies.....hipsters......related, no?), the people that weren't following the movement, looked down at them and would label them as "dirty hippies" and the like. The 70's, 80's, 90's.....all had their own version of "hippies" or "hipsters"......it's a changing fashion and thought pattern, and what I see happen more is guys wearing tighter clothes as time progressed, women either wearing just as tight, tighter, or not...guys wearing thing's labeled for "girls" when really it can be unisex and vice-versa.....society just gets more open-minded about what people can wear which in a way expresses freedom and individuality. We're getting away from the pretty sexist norm of what a guy is supposed to be and what a girl is supposed to be which is why we not only see obvious changes in fashion, but also more women in what is thought to be a "guys" job and more guys in what was supposed to be a "girls" job.

"oh, but all the hipsters now-a-days look the same." All the hippies looked the same, it's a look...some people are attracted to it and others aren't....i'll agree with you guys, the modern day hipster is quite funny when they overdo their shit, but that's them....they'll grow out of it and either stick to a similar style or keep up with the times.

idk, all i can think of right meow, kinda in a rush and don't feel too good, but you get the jist of what i'm trying to say, I hope....or you're saying to yourself, "this kid is a fucking hipster which is why he's defending them"

Are you really expecting anyone to have a super serious conversation about hipsters? Dress as you like. If you fall into a stereotype, others will call you out on it. It doesn't matter if you are trying to be one way or another.

eh, true that_guy, it's just been something i've been thinking about and didn't know where else to post it.....ex-hipster btw.....with some remaining hipster traits, but i'm not excessively annoying about it.

This has been floating around the web for the past week

^ Hahaha. I'm really unsure how PBR ever came to be a hipster beer, but I'll say this... It's one of the few cheap beers that I can drink. Not as much due to the flavor and certainly not because it DOESN'T give me gut rot (because it does), but because at least while drinking a shitty beer... I can feel a part of something. =D

Dude where were you in the 70's? Clothes have never been tighter or more effeminate since.

I hate to break it to you but if you are concerned what other people think about your clothes you are a hipster.

It's a can of PBR, a pack of American Spirits, a brightly-colored bicycle chain and pink sunglasses...

...according to Pitchfork

:D

Real hippies died in late 1967. Google "Death of the Hippy".

Everything since then that you consider a popular way to "express one's freedom and individuality" has been a concerted marketing campaign to sell those ideas to the youths of each generation. It's just a recycled version of last decade's bullshit, and kids keep buying it. Straight edge Hipsters and their obscure music(2010s) are the ecstasy-popping ravers with their techno(2000s) are the heroin grunge scene with garage bands(1990s) are the crack-coma gangster rap and hip hop(1980s) are the cocaine-fueled disco dancers(1970s) are the pot-toking fake hippies(1960s) that sprung from what was probably the last real "style", the Beatnicks(1950s).

In short: Thinking that modern day hipsters are unique, creative, or are forging a new path by breaking societal norms or molds is retarded. Ever since California in the early and mid 60s, large corporations realized that tying a certain attitude and a certain style to certain music was a recipe for making gold time and time again.

Ahhhh, that last item is a bike chain. I'm not a fan of yellow, and I prefer to swim.

But I've been called a hipster, and I hate it when someone calls me that. Its all stereo types. A person's dress/style in no way reflects what kind of person they are, and what kind of world view they have.

I really agree with this, because they are really talking about styles reflecting your political/world view and the music associated with it.

I have always thought of hipsters as a group of people who are just as concerned with their image as your stereo typical cheerleaders. Much like the hot topic goths of the 2000's. Those bitches arent goth, they are just a different brand name than american eagle.

I have always dressed like a weirdo, in High school I got funny looks, now I am thought of as a hip memphis midtowner. Fuck that, I'm a girl who lives in her head, talks to her cats and would rather be swimming.

But I do own big glasses and smoke american spirits.

I could have at one time solidly been considered a hipster. Probably still could. But I don't have my parents money, I like cheap beer and drugs, and I went to a great lib-arts college on scholarship and saw what true hipsters were. Just all those things but they wish they had a shitty life or had done rad shit. And that is what separates hipsters from the people they are trying to emulate.
