Modafinil: stimulant with cognitive enhancing?

What do you guys think about this drug? does it worth it to do it?
I think mixing some of these with energetic drinks, opioids, some DXM, some Dyphenidramine, and some caffeine pills could help GREATLY for mental work.

Keep in mind that I never tried Modafinil yet.

I think you should use the search engine. You may be surprised at what you find. Try searching for provigil or adrafinil as well.

Why do you think that mixing dissociatives, opiates, anti-histamines, and mild stimulants will help greatly for mental work? I disagree. Are you joking around? As for modafinil being a cognitive enhancer, IMHO I don't believe it is any better for you than an amphetamine derivative. It is an SDRI (selective dopamine re-uptake inhibitor). In my experience it feels similar to a weak amphetamine. It might help you stay up and get some work done, but it's not going to make you smarter. Unless you suffer from ADD/ADHD I wouldn't recommend taking stimulants regularly for therapeutic reasons.

I don't know if the OP is serious or not, but I've had no luck with modafinil. After a long day, I would come home and not have the desire to drop down on the couch and snooze for a bit, but my cognitive abilities were actually impaired on the shit. Felt like I hadn't slept for 2 days and was experiencing mild psychosis, especially towards the end of the day, when my head would become extremely heavy from the stuff.

It will make you smarter and alerter in the beginning (in the first few weeks), then you will start forgetting things and having short-term amnesia, like you don't remember in which of your pockets you just put away your wallet. This is when you know it is time to scale down your usage or stop for a while.

Use modafinil to stay awake after a bad night. That's what it's for and any other use is a waste.

But does it do something werid to your spelling/grammar?? ;) Just kidding ya!

OP- there are lots and lots of threads if all you want is opinions on this drug- I just answered one recently, i had a weird reaction to this drug.

It may have done in this case for I'm not sure "alerter" is the correct form (rather than "more alert").

I'm glad I'm not alone in having had weird reactions with this otherwise OK drug. I had strange lapses of memory. I felt absolutely great and with a huge power of concentration, on the other hand I could no longer find my way when driving on a stretch of motorway I'd driven along hundreds of time before.

Good drug to sit an exam but not to prepare for it.

Anything that prevents or postpones sleep is likely to have unexpected downsides. Sleep in general, and power-naps in particular, are the key to learning and committing things to memory.

Modafinil was worthless, I took 600 mg per day and noticed nothing from it. I take Focalin at 90 mg per day and that is an excellent functional stimulant for me.

Focalin is a psychostimulant and I achieved brilliant effects from it. It's the mental clarity of amphetamine without the crap associated.

Focalin

It's an isomer of methyphenidate. It's basically Ritalin under another name.

Modafinil does less than coffee for me. I only noticed significant effects when I took 600mg.

I think perhaps it only works if you are tired or sleep deprived, and then it only makes you feel "normal" rather than giving you extra energy.

I thought it had an effect on orexins or something like that. Orexins were mentioned at modafinil.com but I didn't see a claim of a direct link between them though.

If it's partially an SRI that wouold explain why I didn't like it.

modafinil.com said:
Its dopamine-releasing action in the nucleus accumbens is weak and dose-dependent...............Modafinil-induced alertness is partially antagonised by the endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter anandamide...............More significant, perhaps, (than its adrenergic effects) is its ability to increase excitatory glutamatergic transmission. This reduces local GABAergic transmission, thereby diminishing GABA(A) receptor signalling on the mesolimbic dopamine terminals.

My previous psychiatrist once said that modafinil, in contrast to other stimulants, has a tendency to improve sleep.

He was right in the sense that after a sleepless day on Modafinil you will sleep better. For people who have insomnia because they sleep too often during the day, such a drug is the way to go. But while it works you will not want to sleep much (although you can sleep on Modafinil).

I had the most successful period of my career during Modafinil use.

As Center pointed out. Focalin is a better stimulent (d-methylphinadate), Ritalin is dl-methylphinadate and the "l" isomer is supposed to not be physchoactive, making Focalin twice as potent as Ritalin.

For some of us, Methylphinadate (and related stimulants) are like potato chips, we can not just eat one or two. Modafinil did NOT cause any craving or desire to keep dosing. It just woke me up at 4:00 P.M. so I could go to another 6 hours of meetings after working all day.

To the OP: I did NOT try mixing anything except coffee with it and have no reason to think that Dyphinhydramate would help stimulate thought. In my case I was mixing it with large daily doses of pain medicine to treat a spinal injury. I do not think opoids would help someone who was not habituated to them already.

^ Exactly my experience. It works for what it's made for fantastic but is not recreational.

I find it mildly stimulating and makes it much easier to function when sleep deprived. You can sleep on it if you want. Has a long half life. It doesn't seem to have the peripheral effects of ritalin, amphetamines, etc..

Overall I think it's a great drug if you need to function at a high level for prolonged periods and can't be all sketched out. No rec value.

I'm not sure where people get the idea that modafinil might have recreational value, though I keep seeing the suggestion around. Perhaps the marketing of this drug, even in the more subtle ways, promoting modafinil as a "lifestyle" drug or the mental equivalent of viagra has led to this misunderstanding.

As a few others have suggested, I find it fantastic, for what it's designed to do. I use it fairly regularly when I'm sleep deprived or just tired from the weekend. As an added bonus it's also fairly effective as an appetite-suppressant. :)

Never take more than 200mg at once, and that's of a generic so I assume it's less potent than the real thing. Love it.

That's pretty much what I find.

Hi,

I've used this quite a bit. I'd say 100mg gives a nice degree of stimulation. Its not the amphetamine 'I HAVE to work' kind of thing, but I do think it can help you focus if you make yourself work. If that makes sense. Unlike others, I actually found this drug recreational. 200mg on a night out drinking was very pleasant. Stimulating, made me confident and talk a lot. That faded after using it maybe 3 times a week for a month. Now id never take it on a night out, only to study...because the 'pleasurable' effects have gone.

Combining it with alcohol may be the thing to do if you want to make it recreational. I remember drinking a beer only once on Modafinil and feeling something like a mini-high. I developed tolerance using it 3 times a week as well. I wonder how so many people manage to report no tolerance at all. That may be because they take huge amounts (e.g. 600 mg). I took 100mg and never took more later.

After talking modafinil early in the morning, smoking weed in the evening made me have religious revelations. In a fun way. For the evening I became a quite convincing Buddhist, quite shocking to my peers having to listen to the continuous flow of wisdom spewing from my lips. For the first few hours I didn’t realize my new found truths were Buddhist, but then I realized they were. I then concluded that the current situation in Tibet involving riots and increased repression from the Chinese authorities probably had made a large portion of the world´s Buddhist population meditating on the situation, somehow sending massive waves of “Buddhist energy” to which frequency I probably had picked up on.

I was in a complete manic episode (for the first time in my life), though I realized the whole time I was completely nuts, and I loved it. It was mad I tell you, mad!

A friend told my girlfriend the next day that my wisdom had made a huge impact on her, and her life would probably change for the better as a direct consequence of it.

Factors to be considered: I hadn’t smoked weed in a long time (for me), about three weeks. I was a bit sleep depraved. I had recently begun supplementing with piracetam.
