mixing using upfaders

there was never enough control to make smooth mixes.

That is so true. You can do much longer mixes without using that damn crossfader. I don't think I truly know any dj's that i listen to that use a fader.

^ emulation of big super DJs doesn't matter.

it's irrelevent that someone with a name doesnt
do it so you shouldn't do it either....

i mix usingthe 33 and 45 rpm button to
adjust mixes, sometimes... i've never
seen any of the big boys use it... and
ppl callled me out on it when they first
saw me in 95 do it... but after 8 years of
doing it, i have it down to a science... i
still don't see people doing it, but i use
it because it's one of countless arsenals
at my disposal to make a smooth mix.

if you need to stand on one head,
whip out your cock, and put tassles
on your nipples to make a smooth
mix then do it, regardless of it
you've seen Tiesto or PVD or
Aokenfold or Derrick Carter or
whoever do it.

PS --> the concept of smooth mixign is over-rated.
there are plenty of jacktracks out there that don't
require (nor sound good) when played like a trance
dj...

so, as far as i'm concerned, there's nothing more boring
than a dj who's only mixing capability is a smooth mix...

jack that shit, bitches!

too many djs forgot what it's like to sweat on
the dancefloor...

OK, didn't have time to read the whole thread but -- when the fader is down, zoom to the loudest point in the track and make sure that the level LEDs don't redline or go any louder than the main tune that is playing at the moment with the gain control.
Then once you have the channel fader up to full, when the tune drops it'll be at the same level as the last one. Some people like to mix with the faders at about 80% but I find that limits the number of quick cuts and flicks you can do...

The only drawback is that some records are produced differently (volume is a bit higher on some than others) and you have to adjust accordingly.

Thats why there is a gain/trim pot at the top of the mixer for every channel. So that you CAN make those levels right and then when you use the xfader it sounds good.

X fader vs. ^fader

I never use my xfader, it has been broken since I got my mixer, so now whenever I spin on a diff mixer, I still just put the xfader in the middle and use the upfaders.

To solve the problem of whacking the xfader while mixing without it, I just remove the actual hardware...

If that sounds vague, I just basically take the actual tab you handle off. Ur left with a little metal switch, and it is easier to not hit it cuz it is way smaller than the actual fader tab.

I donno if that makes sense, is anyone else better at speaking, cuz I'm a fucking idiot and I can't make sense of myself sometimes.

ahh fahck it

Where is that gain/trim knob? Oh I forgot, mine doesn't have one because its a piece of garbage. I really need to get a new mixer.

nothing much to add except i only used the xfader to mix when first learning how to. i realised using your vertical channel faders is much better and gives greater control, even if it did take sometime to get used to. only time i ever use a xfader now is to scratch or cut quickly.

this seemed like a good place to share a bad mixer experience....
i was playing put one time and this mixer i was using looked just like a djm 600....but it wasn't.... it was like a cheaper version of it i guess...in
some of my mixes i will slam the upfader real hard so the drums just crack bomb pop into the mix...right?....but on this mixer when you flipped the shit... the upfader would bounce back...you would have this loud sound and the volume would go down half way...haha...it was really fucking me up...

Sorry to hear about that. Do you have a realistic mixer from radio shack or something? I guess it'll really help you out when you get on better mixers. Though you might not know what to do with all the extras that these new mixers have on them you'll definitely have the beatmatching down.

Good luck to you.

About that cheap 600. Yeah it's called a 500 and no one really likes playing on them. The headphone section is all messed up when compared to the 600 and a bunch of other things.

^^^ haha, thats what I immediately thought when I read "it looked like the 600, but wasn't"

with the faders (cross and volume) on that behringer, its either the song is fully in or not at all. They don't fade at all. They just tend to drop the track in fully at certain spots.
