Mixing Idioms

One of my favorite tricks in poetry construction is the mixing of idioms. Along with the fact that the English language (spoken) can have many meanings (bus several spellings) which, of course, cannot be seen when speaking.

A friend came out with a great mixed idiom years ago & I still cherish it.

'They have really fucked themselves in the foot'.

Yes, you had to be there, but it had us all laughing. I shall present a number of such items and ask all the BLs in words to add there own (as many or as few as you like) because this could be a very useful resource. Most poets & writers keep scraps of text, words for future use, so it's good practice.

'Biting the hand that rocks the cradle'
'One more drink and I'm under the host'
'Burning the midnight oil at both ends'
'How would it feel sitting in my shoes?'
'I through a cog into the spanner'
'I'm not trying to poke holes towards anyone'
'In about 6 months you will be knocking on my shoulder'
'Two spoons with one egg'
'Kicking off the hockey season'
'Nuke the unborn gay whales for Jesus'
'We need to sit down and walk through some issues'
'We are cooking on all 4 cylinders'

and, from cricket, maybe the most famous quote in the arena:

'The batsman's Holding the bowlers willie'

A big fat list (I don't care where they come from) would make a useful resource for all the fans of WORDS....
