Will taking codeine and hydromorphone at the same time increase the drugs' effects?

I got my wisdom teeth removed 2 days ago, and I'm still in an incredible amount of pain. The dentist started me on t3's and ketorolac, and then 1-2 1mg hydromorphone. The hydromorphone still isn't even really enough to get rid of the pain. My teeth were apparently really hard to get out. It's too late at night to call him again now to explain, plus I feel bad calling him a second time. My cheeks are incredibly swollen.

Will taking codeine and hydromorphone at the same time increase the drugs' effects? What else could I do to increase the drugs' effectiveness?

Yes they will be more effective but be careful because mixing any 2 depressants can end up badly start low

What kind of tolerance do you have to opiates?

I feel bad for the people that have their wisdom.teeth attached to the bone......I was lucky to not have mine attached, they came out as smooth as butter & didn't need any pain medication.

When they're attached to the bone, so many complication can occur......

You can mix both of those opiates, as long as you know your tolerance, & I'm assuming you are in severe pain, take as much as you need to take sway the pain, good luck!

Yeah I have enough of a tolerance. I am definitely in severe pain. I had Intramuscular dilaudid at the hospital today and was still in quite a bit of pain after that. I actually have a pretty high pain threshold i believe as well.

Which should I take first though?

I'm.assuming you're taking the hydromorphone by mouth?

It has a higher BA by snorting it, & you will get better pain relief by snorting it, but if you've never snorted before, just take it as prescribed by mouth.

I would take the hydromorphone, then 30 minutes later, the codeine.

Were your 3rd molars impacted?

You're going to have swelling and pain, especially the first 3-4 days for pain, swelling can last several days.

If your pain is above normal, you may want to get rechecked for a "dry socket", which is extremely painful and caused from not having a clot form in the socket.

Take the meds as prescribed. You may want to try motrin to help with inflammation vs extra pain meds.

I think the dry socket is possible. I can't take nsaids and had to stop taking the ketorolac because of a stomach ulcer. Believe me I am doing everything I can to get rid of this inflammation, I have a ton of stuff to do and can't afford to be in this state for long.

Not sure what you mean by 3rd molars impacted but if you mean the teeth next to the wisdom teeth were crooked because the wisdom teeth had fully grown in then yes. The wisdom tooth hurt even before the extraction. Right now I feel like the biggest wuss but I'm just doing whatever I can to help with the pain. I started snorting the dilaudid and it is much stronger, but they are 1mg pills so there's a lot of extra powder and I don't really like snorting them.

Would drinking tonic water with quinine before taking the hydromorphone then codeine help potentiate them? I have read mixed anecdotal reports about potentiation, but quinine seems the most suitable to me as I have some tonic water on hand.

The dentist didn't give you a steroid pack to help with swelling? Most do because the steroids help more with swelling than anything.

The 3rd molars are what we consider the wisdom teeth.

My son just had his removed in Feb. ,he had a hard time because his were fully impacted/under the gums. The percocet 10mg and the med steroid pack helped him out so much.

The anti inflammatory meds would help more than more pain meds would but since you have a stomach ulcer, I understand now why you can't take them. My son can't take ibuprofen due to SKS.

Rinse with warm salt water 2x per day. That will help aid the healing process.

Try rotating the meds. Trying to potentiate the meds is really a waste, especially if dry socket or cellulitis is at play. Go get checked to be sure it isn't a dry socket.. On the 5th day, my son didn't take anymore pain meds. Of course, everyone is different in how they handle pain.

No steroid pack. I did get an intramuscular shot of a steroid though when i got the intramuscular dilaudid yesterday. I have been taking antibiotics so I doubt it will get infected.

Also come to think of it it's been at least 4 days since my last bowel movement. Anyone know of a good laxative I can take?

I would suggest you try and keep hydrated to help with the constipation, don't know of any specific laxatives. Hope you found a good dosage for your meds and just try and keep in mind that they are quite addictive and good luck with your torn up gums, it took me a month before my wisdom tooth holes had healed for the most part and a piece of bone/tooth ended up coming up a few weeks after surgery and caused me even more pain. So... if your in a lot of pain you might want to bring that up to your dentist, especially if you had the teeth pulled before they pushed through the surface.

make sure you're taking the ketorolac, if that does nothing then take 600mg ibuprofen instead, anti-inflammatories plus opioids will help way more than opioids alone. suck it up and try nsaids until you find one that works, i know at least aspirin naproxen and ibuprofen are OTC in many jursidictions and most people are not sensitive to all 3.

i guarantee if you take exclusively opioids you will need really high doses to get proper pain relief and that is not really what you need to be doing for a temporary condition. the fact you got hydromorphone at all is a miracle.

by the way combining hydromorphone and codeine will be a waste of codeine.

MiraLax is the best to help with constipation.......they use it in hospitals as well.

It won't work really fast, I recommend taking it the night before, then by the next day, you should have had a decent bowel movement.
