Missing the vein..?

I did Dilaudid IV for the first time a little bit ago and it was pure...from a vial. 2mg. I pulled back and got a flashback of blood so I know I was in the vein but then when I started injecting, it made a lump under the skin and I didn't feel anything from it. The lump has pretty much went away now and there's no bruising. But I'm pretty sure either the vein collapsed or I went through it because otherwise the lump wouldn't have formed?? Have any of you ever done this before? It's not dangerous is it? I mean, it's basically like a SQ injection if you miss the vein right?

I have done it with heroin. It doesn't necessarily mean you went through your vein, it could mean you never entered it and you shot all your hydromorphone into your flesh rather than a vein. When I did that (in the flesh) a lump formed, but it went away a few hours later if my memory serves me right, and as far as I know it is in no way dangerous. Looks funny though.

But if I had never got in the vein then I wouldn't have gotten such a large flashback of blood, which I did. The lump was gone within a few minutes. Not sure what happened! lol...oh well, as long as it's not dangerous. I'll try again another time!

If the lump disappeared that quickly I bet the drug was somehow absorbed into your bloodstream, but if you DID go through your vein you'd think the lump wouldn't be directly under the skin but rather inside your arm under your vein (if that's possible). The flashback I can't explain. Maybe my lump disappeared within minutes aswell, it happened years ago.

Do you use a tourniquet? If so the bevel of the needle might have been up against the wall of the vein and leaked while taking the tie off. I have had similar trouble when I register in a vein and then the needle moves a little while I'm taking off the tourniquet. Practice makes perfect. :)

^ this, or it might have slipped as you injected and went through/pulled out of the vein.

As long as you used a sterile technique it should be fine and should vanish in time but watch for signs of infection (heat, redness, swelling, tenderness) and see a doc if you are concerned or start to feel unwell/feverish.

And yeah, it'll be a subcutaneous injection - not a good thing really as there isn't a rich blood supply (compared to IM) so the drug is more slowly absorbed and infection can set in, but just keep an eye on it and hopefully it'll be fine, especially as it was from a vial :)
