Missed a vein and "skin popped," how dangerous?

Hey gang

So I'm just learning how to iv dilaudid and have been using my hands since the veins in my arms are basically invisible.

I'm being as careful as possible, but last night I thought I was in a vein and slowly injected, but obviously it was a miss and the shot (presumably) went into my skin. I felt no affects from the drugs at all.

Today, there is no visible mark, but the area I injected has an area about the size of a small coin that feels very bruised and tender. From what I've read, I think this is a "skin pop.". Is that right?

How dangerous is it? Obviously I don't want it to happen again, but is it the sort of thing I should be really really afraid of?

Actually I would call this a Miss or a blow.
This can in fact cause a abscess and be painful.
watch it and I have always held warm compresses on them for a day or two leaving it on like 20 minutes taking back off and doing it a few times a day
hopefully it will just go back to normal as many do.

Skin popping by the way is when you intentionally wish to go under the skin and you grab the skin on the Arm or leg or even the butt and stick it in and inject.

What signs should I look for that it's getting worse, or is an abcess? I've read that when you "miss," the injecting itself is supposed to be painful, but in this case it wasn't, so i wasn't sure I had done anything wrong.

It should get red around the injection site then dissipate within a few hours. I have skin popped by mistake a few times (though never more than a few units of solution), and was okay. If it gets any worse after the first hour or so, I would seek medical attention.

It never got red, just a tiny bit swelled up and felt (but didn't look) bruised for a few days. Almost gone now, thankfully.

Although last night it took me 4 tries to hit a vein. Again. I just can't keep that up, even twice a week!

I've been injecting dissolved dilaudid pills.

It's just a miss. Watch tight areas like you hand because if it stays swelled up and red for a few days, the fluid may have caused puss to form under the skin. I had to stick a syringe filled with water into the red swelling on my hand and I actually drew back some puss into the syringe and then it went away in a week.

well its weird that u didn't feel any effects of the drug even skin popping u shld of eventually felt a little something..however eventually ur bump in ur hand will go down n disappear..it is very dangerous if it were to keep happening u cld develop abscesses very important to make sure u r in the vain. its weird to me that it didn't burn or u didn't notice the plunger not pushing in as smoothly as it wld if u were completely in the vain...hmmm

I've had this happen one time. Whenever I'm just about to push off I go very slowly even after I've drawn back successfully. If I feel any stinging at all I immediately stop then pull back just a bit to make sure. I don't have shaky hands, but those who do sometimes have a hard time not getting in the vein, but staying in it. Oftentimes people poke through. I have one friend who is so helpless. He literally starts off at almost a direct position downward as if he wont just go from the top of his vein to the bottom. I always end up having to do his shot.

Wow it feels like forever since I posted this, Im surprised it's still so high up the list!

Since then I've learned this isn't so dangerous, it happens to everyone at some point. With some drugs it's more painful than others; black tar is really bad, burns like a mofo if even the smallest amount gets under the skin.

If it happens to you, run warm water over the spot for 5 or 10 mins, this will greatlyn reduce the swelling (they say to use a warm compress but I think this is more effective, since you have to keep nuking the compress to keep it warm!)
