Some of the things that excite the reward pathway are high caloric food (fat and sugar), salt, addictive drugs.

You are likely experiencing paws and are certainly an addict<3 right now. This comes from the hypothalamus.. take a read through this and notice what it controls.. energy level or fatigue, hunger and thirst, the drive for or craving for food is hunger and the craving for food is thirst. It also controls sex drive.

Some healthy things that excite this pathway are meditation, exercise, positive thought.

The hypothalamus has been referred to as a “pharmacological museum” (Goodman and Gilman,
‘55) by virtue of the plethora of neurotransmitters that it contains. Some of these
neurotransmitters are found in the terminals of axons that originate from neurons outside the
hypothalamus, but most are synthesized within the hypothalamus itself. The list of putative
neurotransmitters includes the “classical” transmitters ACh, GABA, glutamate, serotonin,
dopamine, and norepinephrine as well as literally dozens of peptides that have been identified in
recent years.

The hypothalamus is a very small, but extremely important part of the diencephalon that is involved
in the mediation of endocrine, autonomic and behavioral functions. The hypothalamus: (1) controls
the release of 8 major hormones by the hypophysis, and is involved in (2) temperature regulation, (3)
control of food and water intake, (4) sexual behavior and reproduction, (5) control of daily cycles in
physiological state and behavior, and (6) mediation of emotional responses.

If you notice the neurotransmitters mentioned you will find they are the same ones we manipulated when we used. The one part was crossed out because its nonsense. It causes emotion so does not mediate it. It also has many more functions that were not listed in this summery for some reason. like it controls sleep and wake cycles for one.

The unconscious part of your brain is more powerful than the conscious. You will need to find a way to deal with this.

you can do this;)

I am a sugar addict myself and most times it (the craving) is either boredom or not having my emotional needs met. If you can figure out what is going on at the time of the craving you can usually find some way to meet your needs or at least be cognizant that sugar is going to taste good for a moment but the need remains unmet.

I never got cravings for sweets during PAWS from opiate withdrawal if anything my cravings for sweets would die down as opiates make me crave sweets like a motherfucker. But everyone is different.

To the OP: Are you on any new psychiatric medications or any new meds at all? Some medications can make you crave certain foods especially sweets and fatty foods really bad even if you have never craved them before. Some psychiatric meds have literally made me crave pure sugar lol

Opiates gave me the munchies when on heroin I could eat and eat as many sweets as I wanted I just didn't have the money left over as I spent it all on heroin usually so I starved myslef. When I went on suboxone I ate sooo much fast food and whatever I wanted cause I had money and it gave me munchies like heroin did too. I went from 170pounds to 210 pounds in a month or two but I had to stop pretty quick when I had a blockage from all the crap I was eating so now I eat like a 90 year old man with stomach cancer just so I can continue to take opiates. Now I'm back down to 180 pounds I lost all the weight I gained when I first got on suboxone but I'm not starving much I drink meal replacements and veggies and whatnot which is still more than nothing but heroin.

When I abused opiates bad, I had no appetite and didn't eat much at all. But once withdrawals were over it came back with a vengeance. I was going to mention pysch meds too because when I was on Seroquel, I would eat everything in sight. Don't know if this is relevant to you Molly.

Beginning my second day off opiates, the sugar cravings begin. I always go for sour candy and fruit snacks. I will buy $10 in candy and proceed to eat it all like I am eating a meal.
