Opiates cause histamine release, which induces itching.

http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=483092

Some suggestions on how to stop it.

Try using the search function. There are dozens of threads on the itch, opiates, opiate constipation, and so much more. Even threads on using a fork to remove an impaction after eating an apple pie on your throne. Search is your friend, and so is bluelight.

its fucking awesome...its not like a bug bite so it doesnt get worse by itching it...embrace it...you know its working

Both regfairfield and Codones are right. Use an antihistamine to knock down the itching. If that doesn't work, use a topical antihistamine cream as well.

But, as has been mentioned, the itch is how you know it's working. :)

This is something that has been well tackled on bluelight. Any OTC anti histamine will take care of the itching, diphenhydramine is the most commonly used medication for this purpose. 25 to 50mg is a good dose for itch relief, I find that I never need any more than 25mg. In larger doses (75+ mg, sometimes as low as 50mg) it will also potentiate the nod, so beware. Many people have luck with and prefer Promethazine, but it is not OTC everywhere, although incredibly easy to get a prescription for.

I agree, this has been discussed quite often.

I personally rate diphenhydramine, promethazine, hydroxyzine and doxylamine as the best antihistamines for this purpose. Some people will find that some work better than others.

Captain.Heroin's guide in the megathread (post #2) explains this in much better detail. Take a look at the megathread :).

OTC speaking

Sleep/Sedation: Doxy > Diphen
Itch Relief: Doxy < Diphen

I find Diphen is a very shitty sleep aid, especially if you're somewhat used to it. As an occasional insomnia sufferer, I have NEVER understood how people fall asleep on Diphen. It really is horrible at sedation, and I could never see it actually making you fall asleep if you were unable to do so naturally. Even in INCREDIBLY high doses (when I was naive I took 250mg out of desperation when I hadn't slept for days) it just gave me a horrible high, no sleep. I think it makes the best med to use with opiates for itching relief, for those who don't want to fall asleep, for the very reasons I described. It will give histamine relief, but is horrible at sedation, especially if you're somewhat accustomed to it. I could literally take two and forget if I was sober.

Doxy on the other hand WILL help you sleep if you're suffering from insomnia. Although you'll probably need something stronger for true insomnia, it is great for ending a sleepless night. I find it to be very sedating, and cannot for the life of me figure out why it is becoming increasingly rare in OTC sleep aids. It is FAR superior to Diphenhydramine :/
