this might be a dumb question
but is food really less healthy if you cook it in the microwave
i have heard the microwave sucks out nutrients??? it sounds questionable to me but....

i just cooked a fresh sweet potato in the microwave am i still recieving as much nutritional benefit as i would had i cooked in the oven or on the stove?

ok well i guess that settles it... that was a dumb question ... lol
mods feel free to put me out of misery and close this thread

because laika already thinks i am an idiot anyway

to me it just seems kind of like common sense to avoid eating food that has been exposed to radiation if possible, but i guess i'm just some crazy hippie

Eat your microwave then. It must have so many nutrients in it.

Lol this made me laugh.

I have heard that cooking veggies makes it "less healthier" but I haven't done much research into it. I should, but I eat veggies all the time, cooked and uncooked!!!!! Raw veggies are supposed to be better.

i guess this was the logic which made me ask the question in the first place....
but microwaved veggies are still better than no veggies at all i think!

If you microwave your vegetables don't overcook them, and if they're frozen don't put them in a lot of water when you microwave them.

Anything "cooked", no matter the route, loses some of it's nutritional value in the cooking process, hence why "raw is healthy" blah blah.... It's no different than any other method and you're not subjectifying yourself to radiation by any means.

First partial truth in this thread full of idiocy... (For the record, no, I don't own a microwave. ;D)

Microwaving is actually viewed as a preferred method of cooking by some as it does retain some of the vitamins... Quick source. Subjecting any food, esp. vegetables, to high heat for a prolonged period of time will of course deteriorate the health benefits (read: vitamins/minerals). Vitamins that are heat/water soluble will be lost with nearly any cooking method... not a reputable source but w/e

ETA: When you cook vegetables in water, drink/use the liquid. Don't just dump it down the drain. There be vi'amins in that water.

^ right
btw, there are microwave bags/boxes that allow you to cook vegetables with a minimum use of water and without wasting their liquid - this should minimize nutrient loss.

^ The topic of heating, let alone cooking, in plastic is a whole 'nother can of worms, my friend. Something I do not condone. ;)

well.. I can see why you don't like the idea, but there are polymers that can withstand the heat.
Recently here in italy a big firm launched a plastic (I did not check which plastic, though :P) bag on which you're supposed to place your chicken/fish/whatever before putting it in the oven. I tried it, it works and it does not melt. But yeah, aluminium foil would work just as well without steaming the chicken :P

indeed, i mixed up things. The bag I was referring to is for electric ovens, not mw (as it is the technique of wrapping up food in aluminium paper before roasting it). The point was just about cooking in plastic (or plastic-like) materials.

You can use foil in a microwave as long as its one whole piece and large.. you guys dont know that? lol

This is partially correct. Nutritional minerals are elements (mostly alkali metals and alkaline earth metals) in ionic compounds. To "destroy" a nutritional mineral, a nuclear reaction would need to occur. :P Also, in some cases, cooking will improve the bioavailability of nutrients, this outweighing the amount lost due to destruction by heat.
...
If anything, micro-waves, being lower frequency than infra-red radiation, will be less likely than heating to denature compounds.
