the charge
Detroit, Mi - The Detroit Techno Festival will officially proceed as scheduled May 28-30, 2005 Hart Plaza. One of Detroit's premier festivals, Fuse-In (formerly known as Movement) was threatened this year by a lack of funding and lower than expected
sponsorships. The City of Detroit, along with Detroit City Council, agreed to approve an enterance fee to help the Memorial Day Weekend Festival survive. Event producer Kevin Saunderson believes this last minute show of support will ensure the festival's success.
"I am ecstatic that Fuse-In will be able to take place this year, and I can't thank the City of Detroit enough for their vision and support," said Saunderson. "Charging a small fee for the event will allow us to continue to recognize Detroit as the "mecca" of techno by producing a good quality festival with a world-class line-up of performers." The festival will charge $10 per day or $25 for the entire weekend.
According to Lucius Vassar of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's office, "This is a victory for Detroit and fans of electronic music throughout the world. We value all of the festivals
that take place in Detroit and wanted to help this struggling festival continue," said Vassar. "Mr. Saunderson has a clear business plan to help this festival grow and thrive in Detroit and the attendance figures from past years speak for themselves." More than
600,000 people attended in 2004. The Fuse-In Foundation is commited to mobilizing
resources for philanthropy by ensuring a steady stream of funding for supporting and sustaining the vibrant collaborative process of new music creation and perfomance in Detroit.
So how the hell are they goin gto do it?
"Ticketing the festival raises a number of concerns, including security issues. According to the proposed plan, a fence will be erected along Jefferson Avenue to keep people from unlawfully entering Hart Plaza, and other entrance points will be policed by security personnel, Vassar said. The River Walk will remain open for the weekend, but security personnel will keep people from entering Hart Plaza via the public walkway."
