The most interesting musicians are those who remain constant and true to themselves come what may. An essential part of the daily ritual, music defines their very existence offering both spiritual and emotional release. Nevertheless, it’s not always easy to follow your instincts especially when they fall outside the current mainstream sound but as Bryan Zentz proves, if your hand stays steady and your aim is pure the spotlight will return to you again.
Bryan’s current EP on Plus 8 finds him rolling out on a Richie Hawtin label a full 15 years after the pairs’ first collaboration. In a sense, it brings his career full circle, it was Hawtin who originally gave Bryan the motivation and belief to keep going while he was still looking for his first deal and indeed, it all came good in 1994 with a debut release on the legendary Definitive label. Recording as Barada, classics such as Mathematics and Glue backed up by the full length album Strategies for a Deeper Design, while other early releases on labels like EXperimental, Bush and Clashbackk really caught the imagination of the global techno community resulting in remixes for Woody McBride, Christian Smith, Ken Ishii and Tim Xavier (to name a few) and a DJ schedule that’s taken him across the USA, France, Belgium, Australia and Japan.
In 2004, Bryan went a step further setting up his own Disruptor label as a way of fusing his love of techno and dub. More than anything it allowed him to fulfil his musical vision while offering the chance to oversee the entire production process from label artwork and packaging all the way through to promotion and release. A string of critically acclaimed releases on Disruptor have since been complimented by outings as Stare 5 (CYMK) and again as Barada (Morris Audio) introducing his unmistakeable sound to a whole new audience and with the Midnight Teeth EP hitting such a rich vein of form, his current renaissance shows no signs of slowing.
It’s clearly been a far-reaching musical journey that’s led Bryan to his present position, one that explains his mastery of so many styles - from techno, house, and electro to ambient, dub and industrial. Originally cutting his teeth on the hardcore punk scene, the skater connection introduced him to hip-hop, which acted as a converging point for several 80s subcultures blurring the boundaries between genres and setting a brave new course for a whole generation of artists. More importantly, the advent of the drum machine - the weapon of choice for such diverse acts as The Human League and Mantronix opened a gateway to electronic music, while bands like Cabaret Voltaire and Skinny Puppy ensured the original punk attitude mutated and survived, eventually passing on its subversive nature to techno. It was a unique period, possibly never to be repeated as Bryan grew up under the contrasting influences of acts like Devo, Kraftwerk, Inner City, LFO, Eric B & Rakim, Trouble Funk, Basic Channel, Robert Hood, and Jeff Mills all of which have played significant roles in forming his musical outlook.
Back in 88, it originally spurred him on to start making hip-hop with an Alesis HR16B drum machine and Akai Sampler. Fast forward 20 years and the production process has of course become far more complex and Bryan Zentz has evolved into an architect of highly complex sound structures, skilfully blending tonal percussion, melodic rhythms and indefatigable bass lines with that trademark shuffle of his. The music has changed dramatically but the seed of inspiration, the controlled aggression and raw energy remain as apparent now as always.

Dustin Zahn co-founded Abiotic Recordings with Ian Lehman in 2001 and more recently, Enemy Records in 2004. Abiotic focused on the hard, industrial nature of techno influenced by the likes of Jeff Mills, Surgeon, and Plastikman. Meanwhile, Enemy took an entirely different approach with the idea of making crossover techno influenced by minimal, house, experimental, and progressive. After a successful run of releases on Abiotic featuring artists like Heiko Laux, Tony Rohr, Patrik Skoog, as well Zahn himself, Abiotic lay dormant in 2006. Since then, his Enemy Records imprint is on fire with support from Someone Else, Tim Xavier, Adam Beyer, Tony Rohr, Troy Pierce, Camea, and more.
In the meantime, Zahn released on many European labels including Mindshake, Syndikaat, Mankind, and Compound. His solo live pa's and 3-turntable DJ sets keep him in high demand on a regular basis, with high-profile club gigs and festival slots in Spain, Berlin, Colombia, Venezuela, Ireland, and Awakenings Festival Amsterdam just to name a few. In the last few years Zahn's busy touring schedule & studio releases have attracted immense attention across the techno spectrum ultimately resulting in a deal with Adam Beyer's "Drumcode Records", an outlet which allowed him to present his talents to a global audience. A few releases & tours later he has established himself as one of the globe's major players, from having his release's constantly canned by the the most recognizable names in the industry to headlining many of the world's biggest festivals. When he's not setting dance floors ablaze across the world with his diverse DJ sets or supercharged live pa sessions, he co-promotes some of Minneapolis's biggest techno parties. Having just returned from gigs in Spain and Italy, his busy touring schedule & studio plans are showing no signs of slowing down. Don't miss this rare appearance in the D!
FRANKIE VEGA
In Your System!, Blueline Records, Chicago, IL.. techno
http://www.frankievega.com
Modern Electronics Enthusiast..... Long standing Chicago DJ, Producer, Party Promoter, Record Label A&R and part of Chicago's leading Apple Specialist team: MacSpecialst.
In Chicago Frankie Vega is most known for joining friends in pushing the limits of excitement of nightlife tradition. Thrill seekers out for a night on the town wont have to look hard to find Mr Vega behind the decks turning levels up or come to the realize they re standing on the thunderground of an event he and friends are hosting! His event production days began in the early 90's and were born in the basement of Chicago's legendary Trax records warehouse. This sparked a series of wild nights that rocked through the 90's from inside of warehouses, lofts, roller rinks, biker bars, expo centers and other various venues. After a 5 year hiatus Frankie and sharing friends aimed high to further electronic music influence within Chicago's techno scene through producing the sound reinforced & technically aggressive "In Your System" parties.
His connection to dance music began age 15 through his first job at Chicago based record shop Hot Jams. From then to present, Frankie can safely say he has personally sold over a million vinyl records. Mr Vega worked his way into becoming one of America's most known record pushing sales man. Starting out at Chicago based UC Music, he connected with hundreds of record shops in the states and launched record label Bluleine Records. The Blueline label served as a launch pad for productions by a long list of great techno artists. Blueline put forth first releases by Tim Xavier and vast selling tracks from working folks like Frankie Bones, Woody Mcbride, Glenn Wilson, Dietrich Schoenamann and many others... Vega kept the record push going through the the first half of the Y2K decade from the Chicago Distribution outlet known as Sole.
As the digital era has took the lead on music sales, his salesmanship and passion for being an asset to creative professionals is now channeled through his position as apart of Chicago's leading Apple Specialist team MacSpecaiist.
At show time Vega combines the modern edge of lap top use with rooted dj technique - still utilizing turntables to aim, please and work dance floors into a sweaty mess! His works to score big as a crowd favorite with multi style dj sets, blending tracks ranging from Chicago House, minimal, deep techno to acid tracks while offering up handshakes, hugs and smiles. Spare time is spent working up tunes in the studio - offered through his imprints and Tora Tora Tora, Communique, Addon, Kompute Musik and more... - keep year ear pointed in the direction of beatport.com for further details as well as: www.frankievega.com, www.macspecialist.com, www.naughtybadfun.org
PUNISHER live pa
HEJ Records, Synewave, Airdrop, Detroit.. techno

Punisher (Detroit) Hailing from Detroit, Michelle Herrmann better know as just Punisher, is a petite techno veteran that packs a powerful punch. An observer and artist by nature, Michelle was drawn to music and the creative side of life since the beginning. She was fortunate to find her way into the Detroit techno scene in the early 90’s when the energy was awe inspiring, and from that moment Punisher emerged. From her career's onset in 1993 at only 15 years old, Michelle has set a precedent of raising the bar high for all things Punisher through flawless productions and dance floor igniting DJ and live PA sets. Very early on Michelle realized that being a DJ alone would not be enough to contain her artistic creativity and prowess. Trying to get closer to the music and release the sounds within, Michelle purchased some drum machines and was on her way to the next level. In 1996 and 1997, within a few years of learning the science of the synths, Punisher put out her first two twelve inch EPs on Sean Deason’s Detroit based label Matrix Records. Seeking to push forth the concepts of sound and motion, in 1998 she launched the seminal Detroit label, Seismic Records in addition to her collaboration with legendary producer Mark Gage of Vapourspace. The label quickly gained much critical respect with collaborations from many world renowned producers. Seismic has seen releases from the likes of the Advent, Bryan Zentz, and Andrei Morant. Through licensing by Dave Clarke, Bill Nasty and others, Seismic had become a strong international techno label. This musical energy we refer to as “techno” is limitless and over the years as technology has prevailed, the music has evolved. Punisher’s style has progressed and grown along with the industry as if connected to a part of “techno” as a whole. Michelle’s musical creativity is currently being propelled into her latest undertaking - the founding of new label, Hej Records - with John Overfiend and Sassmouth at the core. Hej was founded with a vision: 'making a mark in the evolution of musical energy'. Hej’s premiere EP in 2007 entitled “Enter The Hej” with tracks by Punisher and Dave Powers, is a release emphasizing the innovative and energetic flavor of the label. Hej will put forth an onslaught of both vinyl and net tracks from a wide range of International and Midwestern talent. Punisher's music has also landed her upcoming immediate releases and remixes for Prosthetic Pressings, Open Concept Recordings, Klientele, Detroit Underground, Peoplemover Productions, and Airdrop. To back the momentum of her constant stream of releases, Punisher travels the world, djing and performing live PA sets on an array of machines. The recent Hej tour took her to Miami for WMC, South America where she represented Detroit at the Monte Mapu festival and famed afters of Ricardo Villalobos, Dominica 54, and a headlining spot at Detroit’s 2008 DEMF Movement festival. Within minutes she can hypnotize a crowd, her sound, a unique blend of exotic techno, sassy funk, and electric driving beats, has resonated on dance floors from the United States to Canada, Europe and Latin America. Michelle has literally pummeled walls of sound alongside artists such as Pascal F.E.O.S., Adam Beyer, Joel Mull, Marco Carola, Ben Sims, Alex Under, and countless others, next time it could be you. www.myspace.com/punisherdetroit www.myspace.com/hejrecords www.hejrecords.com www.beatport.com/artists/punisher+(detroit)
