Ah! My first time starting a thread and it has to be here of all places.. I've already asked this question in the MXE combinations and the B&D threads, to no avail, and have been advised to ask you guys. So, to copy and paste (again):

I have just been prescribed Valpro (sodium valproate, 200mg twice daily) for possible neuropathic pain which I have been self-medicating with low doses of MXE. I can't find out much about it other than it is an anti-epileptic and mood stabiliser. My knowledge of pharmacology is rudimentary at best, but it seems to me these two chemicals would not play well together? Cancel each other out? What do people think?
I'm not keen on taking them at all really as I would rather not be on daily psychiatric medication for what is actually a physical problem. I've only been given this stuff because of the ridiculous taboo on painkillers in this country (Australia).

I've not been using MXE every day and I'm going to take a break for a week or so to give these new meds a try, but I would be interested to hear the opinions of those that know more than I about brain chemistry. Thanks.

This is just an educated guess from some light research on sodium valproate so take it with a grain of salt. It affects mainly the GABA system while MXE affects NMDA, dopamine, possibly mu-opioid, and suggestions of it being serotoninergic to some degree. As far as i can tell there shouldn't be a bad reaction with the two... but like i said this is just an educated guess. I'm really no expert on the subject. If you do proceed, i highly suggest taking ~5mg and waiting to see for any reaction, then slowly going up from there to check for adverse reactions (both physically and mentally). Keep in mind Sodium Valproate and Methoxetamines physiological and psychological side-effects when observing your reaction to this mixture.

I'd ask you to seek advice from your physician first but we all know how that'd go8)

Thanks for the input. I am a pretty cautious person so I will be taking it very slowly if I do choose to combine them. Don't really want to give up the methox. altogether though, it has been very helpful for me!

Sodium valproate mainly affects sodium ion channels and t-type calcium channels. Inhibiting GABA transaminase may be relevant, but I don't think it's a primary mode of action.

See, I don't know what that means. But it sounds unlikely to kill me..
I am very tempted to test a ~5mg mini-dose (for science!!).

I'm ashamed to say my experiments have been slightly less than scientific. I didn't leave enough time after starting the medication to gauge its effects alone, and I jumped to full doses (~20mgs for me) of methoxtamine pretty quickly after intitial tests were not alarming.
If it does potentiate anything it seems to only be the negative effects (racing heart, muscle tension, headache) - that I experience rarely on MXE alone. I don't have a way to measure blood pressure but I think there may be something going on there. I also don't get the comfortable, slightly opiate-like comedown any more, but that may be due to tolerance.
Thought I'd report back anyway.

Be careful with daily methoxetamine dosing. I went through several grams over a couple months and it was not good. The crash was like the tiny crash from every dose that I had prevented by redosing suddenly amassed and formed one huge supercrash that left me crippled by despair and anxiety for days and days. I am now on antipsychotic medication and feel a lot better. My psychiatrist thinks I have suffered permanent brain damage. I also had schizophrenic psychotic symptoms before doing MXE (congenital) but it definitely exacerbated them. I never dosed above 150 mg in a day, and never above 50 mg at a time. I know a lot of people dose more than that. Either I am just susceptible or my psychiatrist is wrong, but better safe than sorry.
Whatever good you think the MXE is doing to you, I promise it's going to do more bad when you stop taking it.

See my earlier posts - I am not using daily, and my doses are generally lower than recreational.
I have used less than a gram in over three months.

Also, forget to mention the Valpro is doing nothing for the the pain and I think I shall stop it soon.

Unrelated but....Just have to throw it out there, a word of warning. I know different drugs affect people differently, but if you stay on the valproate, get regular bloodtests. I was taking it 'to protect against dexamphetamine side effects' (1000mg daily) and developed hyperammonemia. Rather common condition apparently. Lost all motivation slowly, vomited if i even had a sip of alcohol and at random for no apparent reason, developed tremors etc. One day it went downhill rapidly felt sick, vomited, couldnt get up at all for 3 days (till i had a hit of meth, think it actually saved me by raising my BP). Had the weirdest headache with a pressure kinda feeling inside my head, emotional, borderline catatonic, drinking 4+ litres in 2 hours and not passing any of it, struggling to breathe etc. I wouldnt wish it on anyone. Pissed off psychiatrist never bothered with the recommended bloodtests in the 8 months i was on it. All symptoms lessened when i stopped taking it. Will take a while to recover as my CNS has basically been soaking in ammonia. The 'headache' I had was my brain beginning to swell, later turned into facial swelling (sexy!) The only 2 symptoms I hadn't yet developed were coma and death.

So if anyone else out there takes sodium valproate and you develop any of those symptoms, get tested! Google sodium valproate induced hyperammonemia (and the statistics on how common it is, asympomatic or lifethreatening). I'm sure it has some great medicinal uses but can be really dangerous in some cases. I wouldn't combine it with ANYTHING as nobody really knows exactly how it works.

Think the pharmaceutical industry has a lot to answer for.

Thanks for that. I'm not taking it in doses anywhere near yours and it's only been short term (one month, might give it another week or so to see if the mood effects are worth it and NO OTHER DRUGS in that time), but it's good to hear some personal experience as I could find fuck-all information about it anywhere.

Edit: Eep! Just googled hyperammonemia. Anything involving brain swelling scares the crap out of me! You poor thing.
