An uncle of mine did the following

NOTE: 1 drink = 1/2 ounce pure alcohol
examples: a 4% beer, 5 ounce glass of wine, or a 35% alcohol 1.5oz shot

Drank 15 drinks (minimum) up to 45 drinks DAILY for two years

Doctor says he has liver problems, fat is accumulating around his liver, pre-cirrhosis, lose weight or die

He abruptly goes down to not finishing 1 beer in a night, but smokes meth throughout the day for 3 months to lose weight (Loses 15lbs a month on average)

I just barely noticed he had NO alcohol withdrawal symptoms... and he DID NOT get prescribed librium/valium/etc. he just stopped abruptly and started meth

Any clues on why he didn't have seizures and such?

Detoxing off alcohol does not guarantee seizures or delerium, they are simply common outcomes of rapid GABAergic withdrawal.

This is kind of like a "My uncle is 95 years old and has been smoking 3 packs of unfiltered menthols every day since he was 12, why is he OK?" kind of question.

Too true, of course, I'm just looking for a few answers before this closes

This goes against everything I know about pharmacology and medicine

Of course, everyone is different, but I don't understand how the effects were masked that well?

With alcohol some people are just more likely to develop withdrawal symptoms than others, even at equal drinking levels. My father has been a heavy drinker for over 30 years but has no withdrawal symptoms when he quits drinking. Me, on the other hand, have only been drinking heavily for a year and despite my young age (22) I am currently having great difficulty quitting drinking due to withdrawal symptoms, such as bad chest pain, shaking, insomnia, sweating, etc...

ive heard of substituting on drug for the other and that making the withdrawl considerably less...me tho, my withdrawl is always far to intense for this too work

Back in my H days, during dry spells, numerous "friends" would tell me the withdrawals are easy to get through on meth (speed). They swore by the "meth"od, (<--see what I did there? LOL) but I hate speed so I never tried. I suspect the effects of meth simply cover up the effects of withdrawals .

Lol...I might be a pussy...but if he does too much meth and then quits that...I had an excruciating detox of smoking ice...103 degree fever, hot/cold sweats, nausea, vomiting, migraine, stayed in bed for 3 days straight taking as much diphenhydramine as it took to keep me asleep for as much as possible. lost 21 lbs during detox...
