Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone with a stronger or more experienced background in Chemistry can help me with this one as I, myself, don't know what to make of this.

As an occasional Methamphetamine user, I typically have a good idea of what's normal and what's not. Within recent "shopping", I came across something slightly similar to what I've seen before, only this case is different in a few ways.

As a means of caution, I decided to try and figure out why the product was so different and if we needed to be concerned about the product.

Unfortunately, the information about this sort of occurrences is very limited.

*Please note that I would like to understand, from a scientific approach, what is in the product. Information about what it is/could be, similar experiences with said item, and easy means of testing would be greatly appreciated.

My Amateur Scientific Procedure

The Product - Observation

The "Shop owner" had, at the time, got a decent supply of Crystal in - Only it was nothing like the usual merchandise.

It was "wet-looking", but it wasn't dissolving, despite the large amounts of "moisture". The Crystals were pretty clear and looked like large chunks of glass. When the bag was opened and the merchandise was touched, it was very oily and it had a strong, pungent, odor.

Testing Part 1 - Heating / Smoking Test

A healthy pinch of the Crystal was tested in a special Pyrex instrument, often used during recreational use, and was heated with your typical Bic Lighter.

The taste and smell was pretty awful and reminded me of some sort of fresh foot-odor, a sweet-ish piss scent, or possibly some sort or fragrance from a cleaner or fabric softener that went rancid.

When cooled, the product cooled and displayed a normal "cooling" pattern.

After the product was enjoyed in the Pyrex (by myself and 2 others), the taste subsided slightly and took on a slightly-nutty/raisin taste in addition to the other taste.

The Product - Effects

Staying on the cautious side of things, very little of the product was used by myself. I wished to make sure that it wasn't manufactured incorrectly or that it wasn't something dangerous.

Despite using less than I normally would when starting out, it was still pretty potent and strong and easily gave me an effect. However, it had been some time (just over a week now) since I had last used so it could have actually been terrible and I wouldn't have realized it.

To my other 2 comrades, they both felt fine and, aside from the taste, enjoyed it.

After smoking a little more, I later noticed a slight "soot" presence inside the Pyrex's bulb. I cleaned the outside and found that the black residue was actually collecting on the inside of the bulb, not the outside.

Researching

At the end of our session, I acquired a large Crystal (about 3/4 of the length of my pinky and around the same thickness) that was whole. It didn't appear too oily or glossy and it was placed within a small baggy.

Not too long after, I retrieved my baggy to find that the product had been crushed and that the bag had a lot of oily-residue in it. It looked as if perhaps 1/8 of a tsp of oil was added to the contents of the bag. The odor was slightly stronger and a little sweeter when I opened the bag and all of the crystals were sticking together.

Out of slight concern as to why it was doing this, I decided to do some research. I came across This Thread, with similar characteristics.

However, no direct finding or conclusion was ever posted on the thread.

After reading through the thread and all responses, I decided to test a small amount of my product to see if I would get the same reaction.

Testing Part 2 - Fat Test

At the link, the author of the thread finds that their product reacts to a "tainted knife", which is later learned to be tainted with butter.

There is speculation that it's a reaction with the fat in the butter so I try the same test but with Margarine (as I have no butter). I get no reaction.

Remembering Margarine isn't animal-fat based like butter is, I decided to try another form of fat - A small piece of ground fat from a pork-link sausage (completely separate from any meat and, at the time, was an off-white color, just as fat should be). I immediately got a reaction.

Contrary to the linked thread, the reaction actually occurred primarily on the crystal, but only when it made direct contact with the fat. Small grains of crystal that were mixed well with the fat began reacting within a minute, turning a bright red color.

Larger crystals or sides that made no direct contact did not appear to react much at all and the discoloration (if any) was very faint. Fat that was mixed with only oil changed to a pink-ish color but the reaction was not as drastic as with the solid crystals themselves.

Even when mixed thoroughly with the fat, very small but distinct red dots were easily seen in the fat. When these dots were extracted, the small grains remained solid and retained their bright color.

Conclusion

Effects - The product, after melting and inhaling the vapors/smoke, still gave the same effect as typical Methamphetamine. The only slight difference was that the smoke felt heavier and denser.

The product, for myself and another, seemed to be slightly stronger than typical Methamphetamine, producing a stronger effect. However, the third person remains undecided about if it was more portent or if it was just because it was just from not using for a while.

Duration - The product's significant/typical "High" effects did not last significantly longer or shorter.

Symptoms and/or Side Effects - Aside from the typical affects (euphoria, slight rush, talkative, energy, etc.), the only Side Effect I experienced with this product (unlike others) is that my skin began secreting an odor that smelled like the product (very much like slightly-pissy panties mixed with dirty feet).

Reactions - The only thing we observed any reaction to with the product was the change in color when it reacted to animal fat. Although the product also emitted a small amount of black residue in the bulb, it's possible that this has occurred in the past with other products but was never noticed.

There were no odd reactions or occurrences during the other test, aside from occasional gagging from the smell or taste of the product.

I appreciate any help with identifying the causes for the reaction and what to do about the oil. I'd also appreciate any information about why this has happened and if it's safe or if I should be concerned.

Links, quotes, info, etc are all welcome.

I thank anyone who wishes to help.

I'm not sure that ID threads of this kind are allowed...

Anyway I recently learned from hypothesizing and confirmation by second-hand experience that the black residue from meth vaporisation comes from impurities, applying too high temperatures or both.
I think meth itself is hygroscopic meaning it attracts moisture from the air, which is why it could look wet. Store it with a desiccant to prevent or possibly reverse it depending on hygroscopic it is exactly. A little bit of the meth can dissolve in the condensed moisture but there are solubility limits.

Generally speaking you just got an impure product, and I think asking which impurities are present could violate both synthesis discussion rules, since the impurities are directly related to the synthesis... and also ID rules: we cannot and will not pointlessly speculate on the nature of the product or byproducts.
If there are oil interactions, the impurities may be lipophilic / non-polar and the color reaction could possibly suggest presence of iodine or phosphorus compounds. (But that is just a guess off the top of my head and I am not an expert on the matter - also I am sorry if I already said too much here)

There might be washes you can do to try cleaning it up or an acid/base extraction, but if you don't know what you're doing you might not want to attempt more than a simple wash (maybe ice-cold acetone, not sure).

Be careful with impure products. I'm sure there is a lot of drug abuse going on out there involving nasty tarry opiates and gunky meth but that doesn't make it okay.

This is not suitable for ADD... we don't allow guessing at substance ID. (and I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish by mixing meth with sausage fat?)

Get a set of color change reagents (Marquis, Mandelin, Mecke), or the equipment to do a melting point test. "Burn tests", bioassays and the like are near worthless for judging purity.
