Methadone will be used to treat heroin, opium users
BY SA’ODAH ELIAS

PUTRAJAYA: Heroin and opium addicts will be treated using methadone, an alternative drug, under a pioneer project that will start at the end of the year.

The addicts will be expected to pay RM13 a dose for their treatment when the programme kicks off, Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Noh Omar said.

He said the authorities were formulating proper guidelines and an effective monitoring system on the use of the synthetic drug to prevent abuse.

The Government, he said, did not want problems similar to those it faced when it legalised the use of subutex (buprenorphine hydrochloride), another opiate substitute in 1998.

“We faced a lot of problems then because of the unsupervised use of subutex had led to abuse of the drug.

“Now that we have decided to start a trial programme on the use of methadone, we want to make sure that if it is accepted as a treatment regime, it can be monitored properly,” he said at his office yesterday.

The absence of proper guidelines on the use of subutex, he said, had also created misunderstanding because while the sale of the drugs for treatment of heroin addicts was legal, addicts could still be arrested for possessing them.

On another development, he said the Government had already built 10 community service centres for addicts to encourage interaction between them and society.

The plan, he said, was to build at least 93 such centres so that each district will have a centre to help former addicts get back on their feet after they leave rehabilitation centres.

Each centre, he said, would also have a hostel that could house former addicts and those under police supervision.

What country is this in? I'm sorry if that sounds naive, but RM isn't that an Indonesian island? Mylasia? I dunno where is it that migh thelp me to answer your question.

methadone helps some but for most it simply means they have replaced a street addiction with a state addiction...if one can tolerate the side effects of methadone and dont mind that notion of being hooked to a clinic for the rest of their lives, then metadone will help them...

my experience, the majority of people at methdone clnics are definitey NOT CLEAn...they use the methdone as a cructh so they can use heroin whenever they want and wont suffer from withdrawals...

from everything ive gathered, most wil never escape opiod addiction, whether it is street or state sponsored...u can abuse ANY opiod pretty much, so....WHAT IS THE ANSWER????i say lifetime supplies of free/pure heroin ;)

theyve been doing this here in Australia for a few years. Pretty much what tongue said... it replaces one addiction with another. At least you cant od on methadone i think

I was on methadone (for chronic pain) for a while. I was also on valium, and percocet at the same time.

I was not using any drugs recreationally at the time, I DID become chemically dependant on methadone though!
I went off the valium and percs just fine....however weaning off of methadone was THE most difficult thing I have ever had to do in my life, both physically as well as mentally.

It seems to me that this "therapy" is just a replacing one addiction with another. :\

Like an alcoholic who always use to drink beer, quits drinking beer, and decides that wine is a "better choice".

IMO I'm not sure this is the best thing.

But, this is also an unexperienced view, as I have never tried heroin.

I could be wrong =D

IMO bupe is the best option but why not give people the choice? Personally I'd rather deal with getting off methadone than copping dope off the street every day.

^i agree. buprenorphine has an extremely long half-life which allows you to dose only 2-3 times a day and since it's only a partial opiate-agonist its recreational potential is limited.

and there's nothing wrong with opiate maintenance. being opioid dependent doesn't necessarily mean you need to be an addict. people can live perfectly healthy lives when they are on heroin/methadone/buprenorphine maintenance when it's legally available to them. that's why these programs are offered.

But isn't it better to replace an illegal drug to a legal one where they don't have to steal for? RM13 is really nothing compared to the street price of heroin.

Cost is not the only issue. The failure of short-acting narcotics like heroin and morphine is that they don't properly maintain people. Maintenance is the key word here. How can you criticize something that will allow people to wake up every morning without being forced to think about how they're going to get their next shot and what they must do to get it?

i dont think anyone is bashing methadone, we are just stating what we hav been thru and seen...

ill say this, i dont know too many HAPPY methadone maintenance patients.i never unersood the bad things bout mthadone until i realized its side ffects and absolute nightmareish withdrawal....

bupe beats methadon fr the main reason that u can get a monthly script of it, u dont have to go to a clinic everyday to get your dose.this is very important..

whati want to see is some realistic stats on which method of recovery is most successful..dos methadone maintenance keep people off dope , or does bupe, or dos total abstinenence work the best etc etc...jury is still out on that..

If you are responsible, and have clean u/a’s you get monthly take homes after 1year. Meaning you only need to go to the clinic once a month. Liquid handcuffs? What the hell do you call heroin? Freedom! Always thinking about your next fix spending thousands of dollars a month just to be miserable? Bupe withdrawals are just as bad as methadone withdrawals, or worse. If you do a clinic taper, you barley feel any discomfort. I don’t care if I am on methadone for the rest of my life. It has cured my depression (something 20+ antidepressants were unable to do). It lets me lead a normal life, and I only pay $4 a day. It has been my experience thru empirical observation that most of the anti-methadonians are usually people who got kicked out of the clinic setting, or just didn’t want to stop using so they put methadone down.

im have never been happier in my life than since i got on methadone.....before i got on maintainece i would have to live the junkie life... deal, hustle spend my 40 hour a week paycheck all going to some sleaze bags pocket.... I didnt enjoy much waking up because i knew if i was awak i would have a fear of the supply or doing junkie math all day.. how many shots left, how many do i need, how much per shot, how can i fuck people out of money, who has the cheapest dope, who has the best dope, where the closest pharmacy, which vien can i find to use....... even before using iv i was terrible hooked on sniffing oxys ... i know 20 oxy sniffers to every 1 herion junkie.....
now I enjoy waking up everyday and get a rush when i smell the fresh air.... i think about all the time i almost never woke up from a nod..... I get to work on time now. i dont act like an asshole for no reason anymore.....

please if anyone is thinking about getting help for an opiate addiction, dont belive all the bullshit internet flaming that you read... it and other word of mouth methadone bashing kept me from seeking help or telling anyone of my problems for a long time..... I can speak for every clinic but the people and doctors at my treatment centre are all amazing people whos job it is to make you feel comfortable and help you in either stabilizing your use or knocking that monkey off your back,...

p.s methadone W/D is not the most pleasant feeling but the internet flamers take it way too far... if supervised and tapered slowly the comedown is the easiest its gonna be and if you have your mind made up you can do it....

sorry for the ramble i just hate all the methadone flaming going on.... It has saved many a lives and will help manymore to come im sure... just like anyother drug black market ods and non presscribed people taking it gives it a bad reb

Is that a two year old who is flaming, or a flame war that has gone on for two years?

correct me if im wrong, but wasnt that its intended purpose? Or, didnt they to that a while back, 60-70's? I read about them treating heroin addict with methadone in a criminology book from that time period.
