Does anyone else here think it would be good to have a clinic alcoholics could go to who are trying to quit to get the meds and whatever they need to detox but not have to stay? I've been to the ER countless times for alcohol withdrawal and every time I'm released I'm given the same advice that I should go to inpatient or a detox center. But the problem is that I suffer from pretty bad social phobia/agoraphobia so the likelihood of me doing either of those things is slim to none. I don't see a reason there shouldn't be clinics where alcoholics can get meds they need to detox, get piss tested, and get on with the rest of their day like methadone clinics. I don't know exactly how methadone clinics work, but if heroin users can go get their meds while they're even still on heroin I don't see a reason why their shouldn't be clinics for alcoholics. I don't think you should have to be forced in with a bunch of other people to detox.

Providing more effective harm reduction oriented health care services to users of alcohol would be pretty cool IMO. There isn't really a "methadone" equivalent when it comes to alcohol or gabaergic substances, but having a safe, non-judgemental place users of gabaergic substances could go for medical treatment is absolutely something worth exploring.

Is there something you have experienced recently with the medical field that is prompting this you to ask this question nutty?

I spent last night in the ER for withdrawals and because I was having liver pain and thought about it while I was lying on the hospital bed waiting for something. lol Fortunately I don't have anything irreversible, but either way I came out with an rx for 3 ativan. I was like are you kidding me? The only thing I've ever been recommended is either inpatient or a detox center but like I said, social phobia has always stopped me from doing either of those things.

As far as a methadone equivalent I would say librium or ativan would be a pretty good comparison. They have worked well for me in the past when I was actually given enough. Apparently librium and depakote are whats used at the detox center here but I don't really care to be taken off my xanax just to be put on a weaker benzo and also don't want to stay in a dorm room with 12 other drunks.

Have you ever tried baclofen nutty? I hear that works really well too, and doctors are much more willing to prescribe it longer term than a benzo.

I'm in between doctors right now because im not thrilled with my current one but I may look into it when I get a different doctor.
