So a week ago I was able to pull together the inspiration to quit using meth. I had been taking it by IV and quit cold turkey. The past week has definitely sucked, I feel brain dead and unable to communicate due to anxiety. I'm a cashier and I seem to have lost the ability to even focus on a conversation, making social situations awkward and uncomfortable. I don't have enough money to better the situation for at least another 3 weeks and I am still living with my friend and his dad, both addicts - who do not care about quitting. I pretty much decided to let my friend go.
It saddens me because I know he is probably not going to see age 24. He'll be 21 in two days and has multiple ODs involving that shit they give for opiate overdoses that pops them into withdrawal. I can't help him because he doesn't want help. I hope one day he finds a better life for himself.
The day I have $120 I am immediately buying a ticket to AZ.. idk how I can be 100% clean and sober in the slums of Phoenix, but can't figure it out in suburban SLC. My question: Has anyone else who is going through meth recovery know if the cognitive impairment improves and over what time frame.

I am glad to see you taking care of yourself! Your brain will heal just fine. What worries me is the lack of support aside from Bluelight. What are your plans for when you get to Arizona? Do you know people there?

You will be fine. Just give it sometime. Do you have to travel now? It could be stressing..

There is are 12 Step Recovery halfway houses there that are low cost. I don't have any family there, just people I met at the program a year ago. There are halfway houses here (UT) but they are really expensive and I am not rich, in fact right now I make minimum wage. I covered the costs for my addiction and I do the same for my recovery.

Today is 11 days clean.

Either way, check out Crossroads. They have halfway houses all over the valley. They sometimes let people stay for free the first month, then they help them find a job. It's called Pay It Forward. As the person lives there the next few months, they give maybe $7 from their weekly paycheck to the scholarship fund so that other people without money can have the next chance.

I live in Phoenix and Crossroads saved my life. I relapsed, sure, but I have never met a more supportive and amazing group of people. Plus, the food is bomb: huge-ass meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

There is also the Denton House nearby, but I am unsure if they have a scholarship program.

Find the house that's right for you.

Toxic chemicals have had huge effects on your brain...it's going to take some time.

Good for you for wanting to get clean. All the best.

Congrats on Day 7! You should start to feel better during what's called the honeymoon phase around days 16 to 45. Kinda like a pink cloud. Then comes what's called the Meth Wall after…. You could google it… But you are on your way… Hang in there. You will start to feel a bit better soon.

I went through it myself.

I don't mean to sound like a smartass but to everyone I know the honeymoon phase is the first few weeks/months of use where using is still fun and euphoric.

Then the wall is when you get to the point where you can shoot as much meth as you can yet still not get the desired effects.

I think youve got it wrong but maybe we just have different terminology.

Im not in recovery, but honestly. It will take time. get moving and eat right, try and stick to a set schedule. The main thing that usually helps me is to try and target that underlying anxiety. you dont need speed or uppers. maybe you could go to a doctor and try and get some benzos, idk maybe more substance isnt what you need. From my experience with uppers is that if you can quell that anxiety, a lot of the craving subsides..kinda. I wouldnt recommend opiates or high dose benzos though. maybe exercise and marijuana... get laid, take a swim, smoke herb, and then work out or something.. idk if you can nip that anxiety/depression in the bud man youll be alright. (doing so without the use of uppers, that is) natural energy is so much better when you look back at it man. stay clean brutha your almost out of the woods. dry cycles are good for you.

oh and another thing. i forgot to mention. i feel like we have fucked ourselves over for life on this shit. its like weve looked into the eyes of god and nothing will ever be the same. the craving will always, always be there man. im sorry, but its true. im having those same issues myself forreal. but i use dope to get thru the dry spells.. then i use speed to get thru the dope sick. then i end up fucked up on both of em. then totally sober and shit out of luck. its not right, to be scared of yourself.(sobriety)

I just posted a thread about this. It took a long time, but 99% of the time I am totally free of the schitzo thoughts. I get my social skills back little by little by forcing myself through situations that I know I could handle before I started using, and eventually they feel mostly ok. Leaving where you are and starting fresh is a fantastic idea. I promise you, that with time, it gets better. I'm at 26 months, and its not all the way better, but it is SO much better than where it was at 7 days. I also quit IV cold turkey. I commend you, there are very few of us that can pull ourselves out of that hole. You've got this dude, and trust me, it is worth it. My life is so much better than I ever imagined it could be while I was using. Being sober is so much better than I ever imagined it could be.

I just want to add, that I dont think that the cravings will always be there. If someone started smoking in front of me I may have problems, but as long as I dont see it I dont want it anymore. In fact, around the one year point I was at someones house and they started smoking. I had a nervous break down and started crying and literally ran out of the house (which is better than feeling like i needed to hit it, imho).

Hi, You don't sound like one at all. Thank you for sharing your version of what the Wall is. I've hit the wall with meth use when my tolerance pooped out.
There is also a term called anhedonia when one is in the 2nd stage of recovery. It could happen anytime from 30 to 60 days out from one's last meth use… It's a real physical condition. Of course everyone will experience at their own level based on history and amount used.

I would say we both are correct…. from each individual perspective and experience.

Best of luck. You can and are doing this:)

Exercise causes creation and stabilization of depleted neuro chemicals and promotes brain regeneration and plasticity so I would seriously consider adding four or five days of some aerobic exercise into your recovery plan.

Exercise and Brain Neurotransmission
Neurobiology of Exercise
Aerobic Exercise
Exercise 4 Health, Mental Health, and Addiction vs. The Endorphin Factory
Exercise 4 Health, Mental Health, and Addiction vs. I worked all that out
exercise and sleep
