You will need to go the gym and lift... What Apollo said is correct.

You need to start eating more, eat shit loads, but make sure it's clean, low fat food and lots of protein. If you want, post your current diet here.

Additionally, buy some body fat percentage calipers - they're cheap, the Accu-Measure ones are good IME. But don't use the one site measurement technique that comes with it, use the 3 or 7 site method as it's more accurate, and use this to calculate your body fat percentage.

This will allow you, as you gain weight, to determine exactly how much is going on as muscle and how much is fat. If your BF% is increasing a fair amount and/or your muscle gains are minimal, then you'll know that something in your diet or training needs altering.

Eat a LARGE meal every 4 hours. I mean shovel that shit into you. If you wanna put on weight it takes some effort. If you cant feel the food trying to force its way back up your throat after every meal then your not eating enough.

Post workout your best to have a protien shake with some added sugar. Theres not too much of a chance of gaining fat after exercising as your body will be geared into repairing your muscles.

Weight Gain?

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum for this question but we shall see...

I was just prescribed a Tetracyclic Anti-Depressant and I was warned that this specific one tends to have the side effect of weight gain. I was reading the information that came along with the prescription from the pharmacy and it said in the side effects section: may cause increase in appetite, weight gain... etc

My question is... Is it the drug that causes weight gain or is it the fact that it just makes you want to eat more? I'm trying to figure that out because an easy way of combating that side effect if it is NOT the drug that causes it, is to simply eat healthy and keep to a low-calorie diet.

Anyone have any info regarding my question?

Kind of a chicken and egg question. Well, the pill by itself will not make you gain weight.Unless it made you hold water and i've never known any anti-depressants to do that. Actually,I think it's the effect of the drug increasing ones appetite that could cause weight gain. Anti-depressants can also go both ways. Some people have less of an appetite while on them and actually lose weight. You probaly won't notice either until after a couple of weeks. But,if you do notice yourself eating more,a good, healthy diet will prevent weight gain.

Yeah that's what I thought. I couldn't think of any reason why an anti-depressant would cause weight gain outside of the fact that it messes with the chemicals that induce/inhibit hunger.

I read that TCA's can slow your metabolisim and cause carbohydrate cravings. But it could be a combination of diet and the drug. At the end of the day, if the antidepressant helps you psychologically, that outweights the side effects

Do you have any links to where you read that?

Yeah, I did a lot of research about antidepressants and weight gain when I was first put on SSRI's because I was so paranoid about the weight gain. I found this one:

http://www.netnutritionist.com/fa12.htm

I don't know how accurate it is, but it does talk about how antidepressants can suposedly change your basal metabolic rate. You could try talking to your pharmacist for more scientific evidence? However, I don't want to discourage you from taking your meds, if your doctor has prescribed them, I'm sure he has made a good decision for you.
