Hey guys, so i have been wondering something for awhile. Is there Mercaptan in 5x refined butane like you use to make butane hash oil? I purge my oil very well but someone told me that the Mercaptan binds on a molecular level and builds up in your body causing brain legions later in life. So i guess another question is, if it does have Mercaptan in it, is there anyway to fully get it? Could someone shed some light on this for me? I need to put the argument to rest finally.

and i got the material data sheet and dont see it on there... think that means we are ok right?

Mercaptans are a class of chemical compounds. Luckily your nose is sensitive enough (in the parts per billion for ethyl mercaptan) to tell you if you have them in your butane - if it doesn't smell like a skunk's ass or rotten eggs then you're probably good. Mercaptans will be metabolized via oxidation to sulfonic acids eventually and at the part per million level which they are added they are essentially harmless aside from being smelly as fuck.

it is volatile as hell, just like EtOH, mercaptans/thiols are basically analogs of alcohols where sulfur replaces oxygen, they reek something hideous, but can be evaporated off.

Tiny quantities in butane, one only needs miniscule quantities to stink to high heaven, and letting the oil stand for a while over a warm water bath I imagine would free it of the eau de skunk anus.

this is great to hear

i was banned from a website for saying there was no mercaptan in bho

thanks for clearing this all up

that whole thing about mercaptans building up in your body and causing brain lesions sounds like a bunch of stupid pothead nonsense

Mercaptan in butane for bho

WORTH THE READ........

Mercaptan is a dirty smelly chemical that is added to cheap butane only. Mercaptan is commonly added to fuels like natural gas in order to cause it to smell like rotten eggs so that leaks can be detected by smell. Mercaptan can not be cooked out, however, brands such as NIBO (triple refined) and COLIBRI OF LONDON (five times refined) do not cause nasty egg smells in my BHO because they are higher brands of butane and do not contain mercaptan.

Every 2 days I use about 32 grams of HIGH MOFUCKIN TRIPLE A GRADE CROWN NUG ONLY, and yeild 8-9 grams of pure "Gold flow BHO". With my cooks I prefer to use NIBO and/or COLIBRI Butane for my BHO. I consider myself a THC chemist and I always pay close attention to detail.

Yesterday it was a holiday and a lot of stores such as walmart and headshops were all closed in my area. I was forced to search local corner stores for bottles of butane to complete my extraction. I found myself a few different types of butane brands such as: Danny Light, Ronson, and Clipper.

THE CLIPPER BUTANE WAS LOADED WITH MERCAPTAN AND STANK BADLY. ONLY LOW GRADE GARBAGE BUTANE PRODUCTS CONTAINS THIS NASTY CHEMICAL. THE DANNY LIGHT AND RONSON DID NOT HAVE MERCAPTAN SO IT DIDNT SMELL HOWEVER I STILL STRONGLY SUGGEST USING A BUTANE THAT IS AT LEAST 3x REFINED SUCH AS;

NIBO !!!!! and COLIBRI of LONDON !!!!!!

Please respect your THC and Stick YOUR Stickyness To These TOP TWO BRANDS !!!! %)

Hot water bathing does not rid your oils of the smell of the mercaptan. I repurged my BHO a few times and did not get rid of the smell. This is because it only takes a few parts of mercaptan to a million parts of THC to casue a strong odor. This has only haooened to me once and it wont happen ever again. I was so pissed. It ruined my oil.

The mercaptan is not good at all , it is a problem for people who regularly use BHO. And since BHO is expensive to make considering, when someone accidentally uses low grade butane, chances are they will smoke it anyways. I dont fuck around and i know what im talking about, i dont smoke garbo and i never will. If you have any questions about making BHO the best way possible just ask. I call my product the "Gold Flow BHO" and no i dont fucking rap. Unless your talking about wrapping up quarter pound bags.

Mercaptans have low toxicity. There's even a very small but measurable amount of ethyl mercaptan on everyone's breath. I don't see how a very small amount like they put in certain volatile gasses will cause anyone harm. You'd be far more likely to cause your body damage with the butane itself than the miniscule amount of odorizer present.

It's nasty smelling, but that's all you have to worry about with the stuff.

It seems to me that some people are confusing mercaptans with organomercury compounds. Ethylmercaptan vs ethylmercury, very different substances with similar names.

Bioaccumulation and long-term toxicity from mercaptans? Never heard of it.

Thiols are toxic but rapidly excreted,
Bioaccumulation of THC and brain damage due to excessive dope smoking leading to stupidity is the real problem here.

The reason why they are added is as an odorant so you can smell escaped gas. Therefore if you can't smell it, it's not been added. There are a few brands available in the UK that have a 'Near Zero Impurities' marking which are the best IMO to use. Details here.
