Mephedrone traces ingested by pregnant woman

Hello. My girlfriend is pregnant, and when she was around 10 weeks I ingested some mephedrone (4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC) a synthetic stimulant and entactogen drug of the amphetamine and cathinone classes) by placing the power on my tongue and washing the powder down with a glass of milk. I left the milk by the side of the bed, she woke up with indigestion while I was out of the room and drank the remained of the glass of milk.
I am extremely worried that even the tiny amount of mephedrone she presumably injected will have effected the babies development, as the substance is known to be neurotoxic and I gather in that particular stage of the babies development (around 10 weeks) neurons are rapidly developing.
What are the chances of a minute amount of a substance taken as a one off during pregnancy causing any damage to the babies development. Will my girlfriends body be able to protect the child from the neurotoxic substance in small amounts much like it can with mercury in tuna?

I doubt trace amounts would effect the child with the drug being so impotent and so much of it being cleared with first pass metabolism.

Think about it this way... do you really drink your milk so sloppily that you'd backwash your drugs into the cup? Hardly!

Pregnancy & drugs is t-r-i-c-k-y. I read that a woman gave birth to a child with no left hand. She took LSD in her first trimester. It was *the day* for something to slide into place in that forming child, and the drug totally intervened. Additionally I've spent some time with a woman who lost her son after 3 agonizing years. She took ecstacy in her 1st trimester also. He was physically disabled due to some inadequate brain development. You can read some textbooks to see what body parts are developing & when.

Best to you !!!

great.question. The same goes for other environmental toxins, food additives, GMO products, medications, and so on..... There is so much "unknown" here because it hasn't been researched yet. God I want to know more :(

Assuming these stories are true, It's overwhelmingly unlikely that any birth defects were caused by single doses of MDMA or LSD. A quick google search will verify that LSD doesn't cause birth defects in rodents and there's scant evidence that either of these is teratogenic in man.

Most stimulants, including cocaine and methamphetamine, are pregnancy cat. C in the united states, meaning the risks to fetal development are considered low enough to warrant use at the discretion of a doctor.

It's technically possible 4-MMC will turn out to cause horrible defects at the milligram range, but it's probably more likely that your girlfriend will get struck by lightning. To point, you have bigger things to worry about, like what you're going to name the baby for one.

I can only vouch for the one who took MDMA and lost her son.

She never spoke it to the doctors, so there was no medical confirmation. She just felt that she knew, her intake in 1st trimester was the cause of his stunted development. It is hard to know.

Jeez you'll freak out the poor guy with these stories!
Not saying they ain't true, just it's completely different to deliberately ingest a drug and being exposed to a possible trace drug.
In particular mephedrone is used in the range of hundred(s) of mg, and even if the GF had been exposed to trace of meph on the glass it would be like less than 1mg, and meph is definitely unlikely to be active at those amounts. Would it be another drug with much greater potency like LSD it would make a hell of difference!
So end of story relax man, it's all right. Just try to keep drugs away from your GF for the time being pregnant in the future.

It is highly unlikely that such a small amount of a drug could harm a fetus. If she did not get high off of it herself then birth defects are probably unlikely.

One of my old roommates in college who was a druggie asked a very similar question. He was basically asking if it was a good enough reason for telling his girlfriend to have an abortion. When we told him no he almost sounded more disappointed than relieved.

ok, to reverse this situation slightly, what about if the male was using drugs(whatever they may be for the example) is there any chance it could affect a babys devolopment ? or would it most likely just affected the chance of falling pregant, im talking at the time before and during conception.

does the drug use of the male have the potentional to negatively affect the babys development or simply conception ?

Various recreational drugs have been shown to affect sperm quality/motility, however, according to wikipedia:

Once the egg is fertilized, abnormal sperm morphology does not appear to influence blastocyst development or blastocyst morphology

So probably acute exposure by males to various compounds is not a huge worry unless they cause some kind of heavy chromosomal damage to the reproductive cells, as was once alleged for LSD. For small amounts of some random unknown compound, say mephedrone, I'd say the chances of this are pretty low.
