meperidine & fentanyl structure comparison

No real point to this thread, I was just doodling chemicals the other day and noticed how similar they are. Interesting how the amide nitrogen in fentanyl takes the place of the quarternary carbon.

Left to right:

Meperidine, N-phenylethyl meperidine, fentanyl

it is one 'unit' out though, which is the trouble with looking at 3D things in 2D and trying to figure the SAR
 
correct, but i think that has to do more with the lability of the structural requirements for mu-opioid agonism. just look at the diverse array of different compounds which bind to the same place.
