MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A drug lord who pleaded guilty to multiple murders over the course of several years was sentenced to 10 life sentences plus 1,980 months in federal prison Thursday morning.

Craig Petties was arrested in Mexico in 2008 and has been in custody ever since. Prosecutors say he organized and directed a massive marijuana and cocaine operation in the Mid-South. Petties pleaded guilty at a secret hearing in 2009. At his sentencing hearing on Thursday, he offered a short apology.

"To the court, my family, the victims' families," Petties said, briefly turning to address spectators in the courtroom, "I apologize for the decisions I made in life that put me here in this situation. I'm sorry."

According to the list Judge Samuel "Hardy" Mays read in court, Petties pleaded guilty to 20 different criminal charges.

"This is a very serious, serious set of crimes," said Mays. "Mr. Petties has committed more serious crimes than anyone I have sentenced. This is the most substantial criminal enterprise ever seen in this district."

Prosecutors believe Petties was involved in multiple murders, more than the four to which he pleaded guilty. One victim's mother addressed the court shortly before Mays made his ruling.

"He has damaged so many lives, so many lives," said Lucy Turner, whose son Marcus Turner was kidnapped and murdered by members of the Petties organization at Petties' direction. "I just ask you give Mr. Petties whatever the law allows. He can talk to his family. I can't talk to my son. And it hurts."

Action News 5's Nick Kenney was in the courtroom and will have more on this story tonight on Action News 5 at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Craig Petties is DJ Paul's (from 3-6 mafia) half brother. He was Memphis' Gangster Disciples leader and worked with the Beltrán-Leyva Cartel and was close friends with Edgar Valdez Villarreal or "La Barbie". He escaped Memphis and ran o Mexico where he hid out with villarreal until he was apprehended in Mexico. He was suspected of ordering the murders of 8 associates and importing tons of cocaine, heroin, and marijuana into the US. Petties was the main supplier for multiple large US drug orginizations, more notably, BMF or Black Mafia Family who is associated with T.I. and Rick Ross.

The story of Petties' alleged rise from petty drug peddler to international trafficker illustrates how the drug business works and Memphis' role as a distribution hub. It also shows how an enterprise built on American demand for marijuana and cocaine can spread violence and mayhem from Mexico all the way to middle-class Memphis suburbs.

According to U.S. Marshals spokesman Dave Oney, Petties is a half-brother of Paul Beauregard, better known as rapper DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia, a group that has sold millions of recordings.

Collins also wrote that Petties was a leader of the Gangster Disciples street gang and that the murder of a past member of Petties' organization, Antonio Allen, remained unsolved.

Drug-trafficker Ruben Laurel later would tell authorities that he and others had counted more than a million dollars on the pool table on the second floor of the house, according to an affidavit from Collins.

it is also rumored that Petties was involved with the murder of one of Memphis' most loved citizens-Lorenzen Wright.

Wright played for the Memphis Tigers with Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway before being drafted by the LA Clippers in 1996. He was murdered in 2010 after a 911 dispatcher got a call from his cell phone and heard someone curse and then heard 9 gun shots. His body was found in a field in Memphis 10 days later. It is rumored that he was straw purchasing cars for Petties and had recently been questioned by the FBI. It is said that Petties had him murdered out of fear that he would cooperate with police. No one has ever been arrested for the murder.

DJ Paul does good music sometimes. His half brother got a shit load of months in jail though. And btw im not being a dick but Rick ROss is the fartest person from beign a hustla there is. He is a fakeass bitch thats what he is. An ex prison C.O.. And he stole the name Rick Ross form Freeway ricky ross, who just got out of jail recently and is suing fat shit ross for stealing his fucking name. When that cunt his asked about his nickname ''oficcer ricky'' The only reply that can come out his bitch mouth is '''im worth too much money''. He is the biggest fake. Oh and after he used the name Larry hoover in his song BMF, the GD's hate his ass and have issued several threat videos.

They tried to be aight with him but he was a dick so now hes in trouble. FUck rick ross and anyone who takes his fat ass seriously. And T.I. is a snitch and has 0 Affiliations to the GD's...

I know the violence is terrible and all but I kind of like these stories of guys who started selling on the corner and became international kingpins.

I never really understood why in the US thew throw these crazy long prison sentences at people, in the article US Attorney Ed Stanton is quoted as saying this will work as a deterrant, I don't really see how some stupidly big number is more of a deterrant than just one life sentence without parole if the end result is exactly the same. There is just no logic to it that I can see.
