memory loss and xanax

So... I was prescribed Xanax by my doc and he pretty much gave me full reign to use them how I felt them necessary. I mainly get anxiety and panic attacks when I'm studying and have exams coming up. I've read about the relationship of Xanax and memory loss and, of course, this is something that worries me since the idea is to take them so I can study better.

My question is ... how exactly is the memory deficit expressed when taking Xanax? Let's say I take 1mg while studying... will this affect my retention rate? How about if I take it right before an exam? Will it affect my ability to recall the material I've memorized (not necessarily while taking the Xanax)?

thanks in advanced to anyone that can answer this :)

It will make it more difficult to remember information while studying (retention rate will be negatively effected).

The ability to recall information previously learned should remain fairly intact, however.
