Melcaline containing cactus - what to look for

In the near future I am going to look for some cacti at local nurseries. I'm sure others here have been through this before and I was hoping to get some tips.

I plan to call around asking if nurseries have them, but I'm not sure how to ask. I assume they frown upon people deliberately using them as a drug source. Do I simply use the scientific names when asking? For example "Hello, do you guys have any Trichocereus pachanoi or Trichocereus peruviana in stock?"

Are these the only two scientific names to ask for? Are there other subspecies of these cacti that have a slightly different name?

Lastly, if I find a place that has something I am interested in is there something to look for on the actual cactus that would be indicative of a healthier cactus that would be higher in mescaline content?

Definitely ask for them by the scientific names. There are a few other species, but the two you mentioned are far more common (& probably have a higher alkaloid content).
 
Actually there is also T bridgesii, which is supposed to be good for mescaline. And it also grows quickly.

I think in general dark color is indicative of a potent cactus but I'm not sure... it
s really a bit of a crapshoot. Once you're at the nursery, if their plants all generally look robust and healthy then it's probably a good sign. If it looks like there is an issue with them caring for the plants, then I'd skip that place.

And yes, ask by the scientific names.

The cactus will have a higher mescaline content if it has been stressed in some way. Like if it's been deprived of water, sunlight, stable temp ect. I'm not really sure how to go about picking out these cacti though.
 
I'd say, just judging by what I think (I've never bought them from a nursery), that you'd want to look for cacti that look as healthy as possible, and then if you want to try techniques for stressing them before you harvest them, do so at home where you can control it.

I also highly recommend growing some. But look for small ones for that because they're a lot cheaper. You can even grow them from seed but I haven't done so yet... it's supposed to be pretty tricky and takes a long time to get them established and growing steadily.
 
I've never bought cacti from a nursery either. Infact the only cacti I've had have been dried skins from online vendors. I've been toying with the idea of growing my own P. Torch but I move around way too often for all that right now.

Yup, they grow nice & quickly.

You do end up with some weirdly looking plants though.

the best thing for you to do is get into cacti in general... buy, grow and learn about all sorts of them. ime it may be hard for you to chop down and eat/drink/extract a plant you have taken care of for years...

people in non-cacti-specific nurseries tend to know little if anything about cacti. (big box stores are even worse) they tend to provide the wrong conditions for cacti. the buy the plants in bulk from a handful of vendors that grow specifically to wholesale. the plants tend to be generically labeled.

you can get really good plants from cacti-specific nurseries and online vendors of cacti tend to be absolutely fantastic. you can obtain very rare plants at very reasonable prices. if you learn to grow from seed your options increase and your costs decrease.
 
Yeah, I can't see myself eating my 4 mescaline-bearing cacti. :) I like to sit with them though, especially when I'm tripping. Cacti are very nice spirits to be around. :)

Wow, I really have to graft myself some peyote! What a crazy and wonderful idea! :D Did you graft multiple peyote plants onto there or was it just one and that's how it grew? I'm unclear as to how that result would be produced.
 
more than a few people have obtained a serious cacti growing hobby from meeting the cactus god just once. they are very interesting plants and once you get the hang of taking care of them they are very easy to maintain.

One bridgessi & one peyote. Then they fuse & the peyote grows huge & multiples.
