Overall the day is dedicated to getting dressed up all classy-like, going to Flemington on a (hopefully) bright sunny day wandering around with thousands of others while you squander your wallet full of cash on girls, drinks and dreams of winning horses. It's great fun.
If you're going General Admission, you can expect to be shoulder to shoulder with other punters for much of the day. It can take a while to get served at the bar, or to get through the line into the toilets, so be prepared.
If you're going with a group and are likely to want somewhere to leave your stuff, you're going to need to get there early and stake out a spot on the grass somewhere as it all fills up pretty quickly.
If you're up for doing it in a bit more style, you can pay to get admission into one of the enclosures or stands, which gets you a seat, quicker access to a bar and no lines for (cleaner) toilets, but it generally doubles the cost of the ticket.
My one major piece of advice? Eat something decent before you go. Apart from the fact that you will be standing in the sun and drinking for a large part of the day, there is the constant line and the wallet gouging that takes place at the food stalls that will conspire to stop you eating and end up as a dribbling mess in a fancy suit (don't worry, even if this happens you won't be out of place).
