somewhere above myself.
i was recently prescribed melatonin for sleep as the doctors consider a person in my age bracket a risk for drug abuse...

i have a question...

Is there risk of overloading my body with melatonin by taking too much eg; 0.4mg nightly, resulting in body producing less melatonin naturally once i stop using these pills?

That's a good question. Some quick searching didn't turn up much, I imagine it's possible though that too much melatonin could down-regulate your pineal gland's production of it and/or down-regulate the receptors.

oh you.

reading the wikipedia article on dosage, it seems like trials were performed with >1mg doses, so a 0.4mg dose sounds like a reasonably low amount.

how much are you being prescribed a night?

less is more with melatonin. you shouldn't need large amounts and from what i have read it is not something to be played with. definitely only consume at night, or when you normally sleep.

I have heard this... My question is more related to extended use at the normal dose range, using it as it is intended..

Just wondering if prolonged use at the recommended dose could lead to your body producing less melatonin naturally, due to feeding it from a synthetic source.

Yeah, sorry should have read the question more closely.

There hasn't been too many indepth studies on the effects of continued use of melatonin supplements. It is considered safe for short term use, but not always effective for some sleep disorders.

The most likely concern would be your body's ability to regulate the cycles properly after you stop. My doctor is cautious about it for this reason.

There are less invasive solutions than supplementing a super imortant hormone. Have you looked at your breathing, exercise, diet/caffeine/stims intake, herbs, meditation, counselling etc?

Ive been using melatonin for a while.
Id compare it to when i used to smoke cannabis daily.
If you have been using it for a couple of weeks daily it will take you a few days to be able to get back to sleep normally.... but it doesnt feel like there are any long term effects after that.

I take phenibut occasionally too, might be worth while looking it up. Its not something you can take regularly though.

Thanks for the info, man.. Pretty much exactly what i was after.

Does anyone else have any long-term use with Melatonin being used a sleep aid who would like to chime in with more info?.. :)
