Melatonin - Various questions?

I recently purchased 3 x 60 Instant Release Capsules, the capsules are 10mg each, ive done a bit of researching and most the info/feedback/reports are generally positive, providing you dont over-do it and take them everyday otherwise you could possibly end up with a dependance/addiction, and upon cessation could suffer some rebound effects... insomnia etc...

The reason i purchased Melatonin was because im lead to believe it helps restore a natural sleep pattern and as im coming out of my 3 years Benzo addiction i figured they might help, (ive also got some Phenibut on the way) so i pray one or the other or both can help me through this rough period....

I was just wondering the do's and dont's... Is it safe to take Benzos and/or Opiates while im using Melatonin?

Is it best to keep the Melatonin use to an as and when needed supplement rather than an everyday thing?

What sort of doseage should i be looking at as a first timer? im 6ft 3" (191cm) 80kg

What should i avoid while im using melatonin? and what thing should i do whilst using Melatonin? Does it Potentiate anything? Is there any particulary dangerous mixes of substances i should avoid?

Alcohol? Benzos? Opiates?

any advice greatly appreciated, thanks.

- There was a study that found melatonin helpful in benzo dependence.

- Melatonin is a substance your body makes naturally, so there are few drug interactions with it. The main one is that if you are taking sedative drugs like benzos or opioids then the melatonin could increase the sedation, because melatonin causes sedation. There are a few drugs for which melatonin supplements might possibly slightly decrease the effectiveness of the drug (steroids, blood thinners, immunosuppressants, blood pressure meds, etc) but there are no known dangerous interactions.

- Yes it's best to just take it as needed, as your body can build up a tolerance. I have read one study saying that was not common, but I and others have definitely noticed a tolerance with daily use.

- Dosage is not dependent on body size, but on your unique brain, metabolism and hormone levels. If you are taking it just to help you sleep and decrease anxiety, and not for recreational effects, then I would start with a low dose, say 1mg, as less is more - if you take too much it can have paradoxical effects. If you don't find it to be enough, raise your dose and experiment to find the ideal dose for you. Personally I like the time-release version as I find with the instant-release I wake up in the night. Or you can take some of each type. Are you just going to be taking it before bed or what?

- I don't think melatonin really potentiates anything per se, but some people say it can synergize with some drugs and add to the sedation.

melatonin always gave me a better nights sleep for the first night then after that just kept me awake.

btw be careful with phenibut, very addictive.

You say start out at 1mg but my tabs are 10mg!

How am i supposed to work that out as they come in plastic oval capsules not in tablet form where i can break it in to required pieces. Do you suggest i empty the powder out of the capsules and then cut into 10ths?

As for Phenibut whats the recommended starting dose?

what !?
they MAKE 10mg Melatonin tablets? That is a crazy high dose. I have taken between 1-3mg a night for years. It doesn't PUT me to sleep, but if im tired and need rest it makes it easier to FALL asleep by helping my brain shut up for a while.

10mg seems a bit high. I take 6mg a night and it is a pretty high dose. I also take klonopin every night, so mixing shouldnt be an issue. Actually puts me out like a light.

10mg caps? That seems crazy high, I wouldn't recommend over about 1mg, at higher doses you're just gonna get more side effects and have it more wasteful with no particular added benefit. If you prefer (as I do), you can take it sublingual as well, which can decrease time it takes to kick in and give you better control over it.

It's true that melatonin supplements different people very differently and there are also differences between different forms and brands of melatonin. The effects are also different depending on how much you take. I'm inclined to speculate that taking huge amounts might actually lessen the effects. The other thing to note that therapeutic dosing is different from recreational dosing. If you are using it to help you fall asleep you want to stick to low doses.

Yes, that would be a good idea. Are you sure that the capsules actually contain 10mg of melatonin and aren't a homeopathic preparation, only part melatonin (say 10% melatonin, 10% inactive ingredients), or a mix of melatonin and other things? Does it say "each capsule contains 10mg melatonin" on the label?

I think i started on like 200mg, but quickly built up to 3g a day.
That is a gigantic dose. How many pills did you have to take?!

i took 1g over 1 1/2 hours ago....... feel nothing yet.......

Wow melatonin hits me in like 30 min...everyone different i guess

Yeah, it hits me in 30min too. That's assuming a person is taking an IR version and not an ER version. I'm inclined to think less is more with melatonin. 1mg is enough to make me drowsy and if I take much more than that it has pronounced effects and is counter-productive (for me). But the effects do seem to vary greatly from person to person.

Melatonin is actually a great antioxidant that breaks the blood brain barrier, so would protect against free radicals caused by some drugs.

Did you try to lie down and sleep?

I found it to be very subtle and if I don't lie down or anything I actually feel nothing but when I do lie down, I fall asleep in less than 20mins.

I am the same way. If I decide to try to stay awake after I take it, I will easily stay awake. But about 30 min into it if I am lieng down ill fall asleep before i know it.
