Does anyone know how much melatonin it would take to make you sleepy? I've tried other drugs and herbal remedies but none seem to work. Is 8 mg too much to take? Also, if you take too much, could that get you high (just kind of curious :\)? Thanks for any replies!

1mg is usually the smallest pill sold. 3mg are common, but considered overkill. I think they make 6mg too, though with higher doses I actually have experienced greater difficulty in falling asleep. No you won't get high.

One of the sleeping aids I sometimes use is 3mg Melatonin in a special depositary form which releases the hormone trough the night so it is not used up before going to bed. Combining Melatonin with strong Anti-Histamines like 100mg Promethazine/Phenergan synergizes very well with the hormone Melatonin. Try also some GABA-enhancing medications like Karbamezapim to if You can.
But for me I do at least need a good dose of long-term action Benzodiazepines (like Diazepam or Nitrazepam, Flunitrazepam/"Roofies") also works well to make the combination work. On this I can sleep three-to four hours if I'm lucky.

Also, some pharms like "Alimemazin" can also help (on strong doses) people out. But sleeping is hard and it's worse than the life on drugs (well, if one use stimulates then their's their own fault in my opinion).

Pill form of melatonin does nothing for me. I suggest you get it in spray form (NutraSpray). Spray about 5 shots under your tongue and let it sit for 45 seconds..then swish and swallow it. It takes about an hour to work and you'll be knocked off your ass.

I usually take anywhere from 3mg to 6mg at once.

I used to combine a smaller dosage with valerian root, but that stuff smells like ass and I can't swallow the capsules very well.

It is a natural supplement. The body already produces melatonin natuarally some people just don't seem to have enough. It has never worked for sleep for me, but then again most major tranquilizers don't knock me out in high doses. But anyways, there is this over the counter pill called "Sleep MD" my boyfriend who has sleeping problems takes it. It's all natural...has some valerian root in it, ect....and he swears by it. You can pick it up at your local drugstore.

Don' take melatonin alot. Long use can make your own bodies production of it slow down and stop. Stik to herbs. Melatonin is only for people who fly over the world and get jet lag. or pep tying to reset there bio clock back to a normal time. And it only works at night.

Don't pop these during the day thinking there drugs that help u sleep. lol

I read on the back of a bottle of melatonin once that it's a chemical that is released when your enviornment gets dark. So to add on to taking it, just saying that being in a dark room might help. That might be obvious, but I know a few people who take it that think it'll just suddenly knock them out without getting prepared for bed first.

Or for those who don't produce enough, which is why I take it.

wow

ok i use melatonin quite frequently and it works amazing as a sleep aid, supposing your patient enough to ready this and not a knumbnuts.

Melatonin is produced in your body every night, it is produced by all of your skin cells, SMOKING WEED instantly activates production, so smoking weed is like going into a dark room for 2 hours.... seems true.
Melatonin is one of the most potent anti oxidants out there, and it is reusable, meaning it doesn't sacrifice itself against the first radical. it also sets off a cascade of antioxidants when is gets metabolized.
YOUR BODY USES SERoTONIN TO MAKE MELATONIN
Smoking weed makes you depressed and sleepy, in the long run ^^^^^
Melatonin has a reverse response curve, you will get the MOST OUT IT AT AROUND 2mg-3
30 will almost certainly do nothing
MELATOnin does not make you tired, sleepy or any more WiLLing to go to sleep. This must be under your own volition. I used to be awake for hours just lying in bed thinking crazy loops.
You must force yourself into the counting sheep mental state, i.e. delta
Then and only then will this drug cause you to fall asleep.

The best way i can describe it is, if i take the shit, and get in bed, in 20~ mins i am asleep. the next day i wake up, think, wtf happened, last i remember i was wide awake, then i realize how fucking crazy my dream was.
I don't want to use caps, but MELATONIN is the best sleep aid, for making sleep more potent. but it does nothing to make you go to sleep.
benadryl gets me into sleep mode, melatonin turns me off.
My nighty: benadryl, melatonin, 5-htp = the most wicked lucidity throughout dreams, and the desire to pass out in my bed.
Melatonin is a sleep aid for the subconscious, therefore you will never notice its effect.

thoughts???

melatonin is fabulous and has been my life saver on several occasions! i too find that a smaller dose (around 1mg) does the trick much better than a larger one, as bob loblaw mentioned -it's more difficult to fall asleep with higher doses. higher amounts leave me personally feeling a bit tweaked but not in a good way like from drugs. anyway, no; it will not get you high but it will give you some crazy & intense dreams! i've also taken valerian root in the past and it used to do the trick, but now i'd have to eat an entire bottle for it to have any effect. strange. i've heard though that by mixing melatonin, valerian root, and a b vitamin (i can't remember which one, either 6 or 12, i'll have to re-look it later) it's supposed to give you insane vivid dreams.

another alternative is 5-htp which is used to reduce anxiety, elevate your mood, and help with insomnia. it metabolizes in to serotonin which i believe has something to do with melatonin production (though, don't quote me on that last part). i take it in the morning to get through the day or at night for sleep. it also has worked wonders for me in the past.

happy snoozing!

To answer THE QUESTION;

Recommended dosage for sleep improving and/or inducing properties:
3mg or below

Sustained release highly recommended. You should take a few weeks before evaluating the effects on your sleep.

If you really just wanna hit the floor (in the "looks painful, but isn't"-way) right NOW there are GHB and bensoz and other stuff, but I take it that wasn't the plan here.

I take 3mg and I can barely function, we call it a melatonin coma.

My step-brothers who are like 12 & 14, each take around 24mg of melatonin a night, on top of a shit ton of benzos and other crazy shit. Meds kids should not be on. Man, if I had the full list of what they took at night, you people would shit yourself.

It differs between people. Too high of a dose will make the insomnia worse in my experience. I usually use between 3 and 6 mg, and I use it about once every two days. I find that when you use it every day it makes it completly impossible to sleep without it, but this effect isn't present when use is not as frequent. I like melatonin a lot, but when I take too much and get less then 8-10 hours of sleep it tends to make me super groggy the next day.

my melatonin pills are not in the mg range they are 300 micrograms each

Just for the record; clinical studies have verified the efficiency of sub-mg doses, even though it varies between people.

My interpretation:

If the goal is quality sleep; find the dose that works best for you, while remembering that the dose::response-curve is shaped like an inverted U. Doses above 6mg are probably a waste of time and money for the vast majority of people.

For people in doubt about the efficiency, this meta-analysis is worth taking a peek at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1370968/pdf/bmj33200385.pdf
