Mel Smith - "aye but it works wonders for the gout"

I don't think the nurofens killed him tho shammy - can't see what damage they'd do to someones heart. My guess is he was just overweight, out of shape, eating crap and the blood had such a hard time getting through his arteries that you could hear it squeaking.
Ibuprofen - NSAIDs in general, in fact - are known to cause heart problems actually, Issy.
It prolly was a combination of all that really.
My mum takes it daily (as I do - fucking joints n lumber back :X), and as I've said in the past she's an Alcoholic and she takes atleast 2 different blood-pressure compounds (Atenolol being one of them), so booze and Ibuprofen are likely almost counter-balancing the heart-pressure compounds :(

he founded talkback. 'nuff said.

rip.

alasdair
BAM!
Exactly <3

I said that about ibuprofen, I wasn't aware that it could fuck up your heart, even in overdose...

NSAID's are pretty well known to be horrible for the heart...

Cardiovascular

NSAIDs aside from aspirin, both newer selective COX-2 inhibitors and traditional anti-inflammatories, increase the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke.[9][10] They are not recommended in those who have had a previous heart attack as they increase the risk of death and / or recurrent MI.[11] Naproxen seems least harmful.[10]

NSAIDs aside from (low-dose) aspirin are associated with a doubled risk of symptomatic heart failure in patients without a history of cardiac disease. In patients with such a history, however, use of NSAIDs (aside from low-dose aspirin) was associated with a more than 10-fold increase in heart failure.[12] If this link is proven causal, researchers estimate that NSAIDs would be responsible for up to 20 percent of hospital admissions for congestive heart failure. In people with heart failure, NSAIDs increase mortality risk by approximately 1.2-1.3 for naproxen and ibuprofen, 1.7 for rofecoxib and celecoxib, and 2.1 for diclofenac.[13]

I didn't know that stuff. I already consider naproxen to be better than the other three mentioned, so it seems that should be on shelves. I always thought ibuprofen was super-safe, other than the ulcers. Then again, you initially think that about paracetamol...

They are actually really quite iffy and it's not like GPs and pharmacists mention it either. They really should if they know people are gonna be using a lot for a long period. Nobody said a word to me despite the fact I was taking enough (maximum recommended dose daily) to be causing me to vomit blood at regular intervals cos my script really doesn't touch the sides in terms of pain relief. Naproxen is unlikely to ever be OTC as it is fukkin brutal on the gut and really needs to be taken in conjunction with omeprazole which is itself prescription only. Really though, all NSAIDs should probably be taken in conjunction with omeprazole if used heavily or longterm cos they're really rather nasty.

Is amazing really that literally all the standard OTC painkillers are dodgy as fuck if taken at maximum recommended levels or even just slightly above. Opies would be fine taken at recommended doses or even quite a bit above. Risk of recreational use and/or addiction really is worse than heart failure, internal bleeding, stomach ulcers, critical overdose (unlike opioid overdose which is routinely sorted with a quick jab of naltrexone) it seems.

Isn't the "heart problems" something like instead of 8 in a 1000 dying, if you're on diclofenac then 15 in a thousand die?

I'm on naproxin at the mo shammy! I always take it on a full stomach.

Fuck! I didn't know that about ibuprofen either! IMO it's the best OTC pain medication available, much better than paracetamol and more forgiving on yer liver - but didn't know it fucked yer heart up. I used to bosh loads before I got my crack addled teeth taken out - twice the recommended dose would stop me smashing my head on the wall due to toothache :(

I don't think ibuprofen causes any heart damage, in regular doses. It certainly causes stomach ulcers, and other things, if it's prolonged usage. However, that seems to be typical of most NSAIDs. It has the advantage of not really being useful in suicide attempts. Ibuprofen is definitely better at pain relief, for most things, but paracetamol is good for bringing your temperature down. Both is the best bet, if you need relief, even with a bit of codeine chucked in.
