Please post any and all stories relating to a clandestine Methamphetamine lab explosion in this thread. These stories are often tragic, leading to longterm health problems, death, massive property damage, loss of freedom, etc. The modern clandestine Meth lab is a symbol of the failure and nihilism of prohibitionist drug policies.

ATHENS, Texas — A 28-year-old man is being held in the Henderson County Jail on a murder charge after a woman died following a chemical explosion at an alleged methamphetamine lab.

Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said authorities believe the 20-year-old victim died Thursday from exposure to anhydrous ammonia after a container ruptured in a storage building in the western part of the county, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported. The woman's name was withheld pending notification of relatives. She died in a Dallas hospital.

Joseph Don Myers, who was not at home at the time of the accident, has been charged with murder and manufacturing of a controlled substance. He was being held on $15,000 bond on the drug charge. Bond was not set on the murder charge.

The jail had no information on whether Myers had an attorney.

Woman killed in ‘lab’ explosion

Police believe site was being used to manufacture methamphetamine; one arrest made

From staff reports

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an explosion that killed a woman in the Seven Points area Thursday. One man was arrested in connection to the blast, which is still being investigated.

Twenty-eight-year old Joseph Myers was booked into the Henderson County Jail Thursday on a charge of manufacturing with intent to deliver a controlled substance (4 grams to 200 grams). Myers could face additional charges, Sheriff Ray Nutt said.

Sheriff’s office dispatch received a call Thursday night that a woman had been injured in an explosion in the Blanton Ranch Estates subdivision. The Seven Points Fire Department and East Texas Medical Center Gun Barrel EMS were the first responders at the residence.

No other injuries were reported.

Rescue personnel attended to the injured woman, then transported her to ETMC Gun Barrel. She was transferred to Parkland Medical Center in Dallas where she later died. An autopsy on the woman is being conducted by Southwest Medical Center in Dallas.

Authorities were still withholding the name of the woman Friday afternoon, pending notification of next of kin.

The Henderson County Drug Enforcement Unit, along with deputies and investigators from the sheriff’s office, conducted a search of the house. Officers located methamphetamine and chemicals that can be used to manufacture methamphetamine. After concluding the search, investigators arrested Myers without incident.

HCSO reports said several people were inside the residence in addition to Myers and the victim. Investigators notified Child Protective Services concerning a child who was with Myers at the time of the arrest.

Crews Investigating Meth Lab Fire In Fern Creek

Wave 3

6/5/2009 - updated 6/15/2009

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A woman was hospitalized with burns early Friday after a fire caused by a meth lab at the Cedar Heights mobile home park in Fern Creek.

Metro Police tell say the Fern Creek Fire Department responded to a call about a structure fire at 9504 Stall Court around 4:30 a.m.

LMPD Metro Narcotic Detective Sgt. Stan Salyards says firefighters arriving on the scene "found a female, two doors down, who had left that trailer, and who had been exposed to a fire and meth lab. Also called was the Suburban HazMat unit to [decontaminate] the female before she was transported to the hospital."

Police have identified that woman as 28-year-old Kristy Rixman. She was taken to University Hospital in an ambulance lined with plastic with burns.

No word yet on her condition.

Salyards told us the fire started in the bathroom and bedroom area.

Residents of the mobile home park tell us they were awakened by a woman pounding on doors and screaming "Help me!" and "I'm sorry!"

Neighbors saw smoke coming from one home and called for help. One woman told us her children were inside one of the homes near the home that caught fire, and that one of her family members opened the door to help Rixman and waited with her for firefighters to arrive.

Police say that the man and his family were evaluated by HazMat teams, but did not need to be decontaminated.

There's always a possibility that meth labs could explode or catch fire, and they pose a danger to those cooking the drug as well as to others anyone in the vicinity. "The meth lab produces vapors and volatile chemicals you can breathe as well," Salyards said.

Police say they have busted more meth labs this year compared to last year. Salyards says neighbors should watch for signs of meth activity and report it to police, including "people who are up all hours of the day and night ... odd behavior - believe it or not, people cleaning the windows at 2 or 3 in the morning. We've actually seen that."

Another red flag: "any kind of chemical smell," Salyards said. "Something that you're not used to."

Someone else was inside the trailer when it caught fire, but he ran away. Police arrested 31-year-old William A. Foster Jr. just before noon and charged him with manufacturing meth.

Rixman remained hospitalized Friday, but once released she will be arrested and charged with manufacturing meth and cultivating marijuana.

Mobile Meth Lab Fire Caused Crash

Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette

6/18/2009

A mobile meth lab is being blamed for a crash in Huntington on Monday afternoon that sent an unattended car into a light pole.

Indiana State Police said Shawn M. Burnworth, 32, of Huntington, was in a 2000 green Chrysler shortly after 4:20 p.m. when, according to witnesses, the passenger compartment caught fire on Etna Avenue and Jefferson Street. Burnworth bailed out of the burning car that continued west on Etna and then hit a light pole on the north side of the road.

Burnworth was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne to receive treatment for injuries as a result of the fire, police said.

The Huntington Fire Department and a state police detective determined that items commonly used to make methamphetamine were inside the car, and the state Clandestine Laboratory Team was called in to deal with it.

Early Tuesday evening, state police arrested Burnworth on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine and buying 3 or more grams of pseudoephedrine in a seven-day period.

Agencies participating at the scene also included the Huntington Police Department and the Parkview Huntington Hospital EMS.

Johnston City Mayor Suspects Arson Or Meth Lab Caused Downtown Blaze

Marion Daily Republican

6/16/2009

Johnston City, Ill. -
Johnston City's mayor says he's been told Sunday's fire that destroyed nearly an entire city block is the result of arson or a meth lab explosion.

Mayor Ryan Horn says that whatever the cause, he knows it's suspicious.

"It was an abandoned building with no electricity," Horn said. "It had to be arson or a meth lab or something of that nature."

Fire officials in Johnston City along with police and the Illinois State Fire Marshall are investigating the fire which broke out around 2 a.m. Sunday. Before the fire was under control, fire departments from Johnston City and 12 other communities battled the blaze.

Horn said that the investigation has pointed to a couple of suspects.

"We have a couple of suspects, but we're not giving their names," Horn said. "The fire is still under investigation. Hopefully before too long we'll have [the suspects] in custody."

Along with two abandoned buildings, the fire also destroyed the Johnston City H & R Block office. A bar called The Pub was also damaged by the fire. The Pub's owner has indicated he would like to rebuild.

"It's going to be difficult," Horn said. "He also said he would like to buy the lots with all of the other buildings that were damaged."

Horn said the owner of the building where the fire started lives in Florida.

"She has no money or no insurance," he said. "She has already agreed to sign the deed over to the city.

"After it's leveled, the property will be ours. Hopefully we can lease it out or sell it to someone who will put a business there."

Horn said if the city takes over the property, it will have to assume the cost of cleaning up the lots.

"We just hope to be able to sell it or lease it to recover our costs and try to get a good business in there that will bring additional revenue to the city."

Fox 17 Nashville

6/18/2009

CLINTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities are waiting on an autopsy to identify a man found in the ruins of a fire at a mobile home in Clinton that had been quarantined after police found a methamphetamine lab there.

Anderson County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Mark Lucas told the Knoxville News Sentinel that investigators believe the man is the owner of the home, John Auston Lowe, but are waiting on confirmation.

The body was found Wednesday after an overnight fire and the cause of the fire is not known. The home had been closed since March when an active meth lab was found.

Lucas said a neighbor was charged with meth-related offenses in that investigation.

A Crack In New Jersey's Meth Market

The Examiner

6/20/2009

Finding a crack in North Jersey's methamphetamine market, authorities have smashed a distribution ring that they said brought the drug in from the West Coast.

The operation sold $10,000 worth of meth a week in Hudson, Bergen and Essex counties, said authorities, who arrested 19 people. They said they also seized two guns and money-counterfeiting equipment.

The ringleader, 40-year-old Edward Cruz Jr. of Belleville, recruited members from the Greenville section of Jersey City, North Bergen and Perth Amboy, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

Meth-producing labs tend to operate in rural areas -- in part, because of the noxious fumes from the chemicals used to make it. Unfortunately, authorities don't find most meth labs until an amateur chemist has caused a fire -- or, worse, an explosion.

A Texas man was charged with murder this week after vapors from a meth lab explosion killed a 20-year-old woman.

Given the dangers, distributors consider "crank" or "ice" worth importing -- mostly from California, the country's major source of meth for more than two decades. Because it isn't easily found it highly populated areas, crystallized meth can sell for five times as much as a gram as cocaine.

Adolf Hitler's favorite drug primarily releases dopamine and serotonin, which intensify feelings of euphoria. That makes it highly addictive, easily increasing tolerance in the user.

It also eventually becomes extremely destructive to the central nervous system, causing anorexia, insomnia, tremors, convulsions -- even death -- among other effects.

Trouble is: Meth addiction is one of the most difficult to treat.

Besides Cruz, authorities identified those arrested as: Jersey City residents Andy Philip, 24, of Monmouth Street; Carcious Lloyd Thompson, 40, of Kensington Avenue; Jason Camerino, 29, of Fairview Avenue; Ladislao Rodriguez, 53, of Wayne Street; Michael Trinidad, 22, of Neptune Avenue; Stephen L. Scarano, 44, of Ogden Avenue; Virgilio Peralta, 64, of Cottage Street and Patrick Fleming, 50, of North Bergen.

Man Sentanced For Meth Lab Explosion

WXTV 15 / Associated Press

6/22/2009

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Tangipahoa Parish man has been sentenced to 17 1/2 years in prison for his part in a botched attempt to cook methamphetamine that blew up a Tickfaw trailer and killed one person more than two years ago.

U.S. District Judge Lance M. Africk in New Orleans handed down the sentence late last week against 34-year-old Arthur Chabaud the last of 3 defendants sentenced in the Jan. 14, 2007, explosion.

In March, in an agreement with prosecutors, Chabaud pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to manufacture five or more grams of methamphetamine. Prosecutors agreed to drop three other counts against him.

During sentencing, Africk also ordered Chabaud to receive mental-health and drug-abuse treatment and gave him four years of supervised release after his prison term ends.

Meth Lab Explosion Damages Hotel

Alabama investigators believe several men cooking meth caused an explosion at a suburban Mobile motel.

This week’s explosion took out a ten by eight foot section of the front wall, the back wall and collapsed part of the ceiling of the Bayou La Batre motel room.

One person was severely burned in the blast and was taken to a hospital. Police are looking for two other men who were seen running from the room soon after that blast.

No one else at the motel was injured in the explosion.

Neighbors Shaken By Meth Lab Explosion

ELKHART — Two people are in jail after an explosion and fire in Elkhart. John Ellis and Jennifer Myer face several felony drug charges.

Police say a meth lab in a garage exploded in broad daylight in a quiet neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

“We had a little scare here and we're concerned because there are a lot of children here,” said Mike Eaton.

Eaton lives a couple houses down from what's left of the garage. Eaton and other neighbors say they've noticed a lot of suspicious activity.

“We, a lot of us suspected it, so it wasn't like it was a surprise,” Eaton told WSBT News. “We all told our children to stay away from that area. We were concerned because our houses are so close together.”

“The street crimes unit had had information prior to this fire that there was probably some meth activity or drug activity at that residence,” said Elkhart Police Lt. Ed Windbigler. “Our drug unit, our street crimes people, went out with the fire department, responded to the scene.”

At the scene, investigators found a labs, meth-making ingredients and prescription drugs. They also found a surveillance camera on the front of the house, as well as a pair of night vision goggles.

Police and fire investigators say they have seen a growing number of cases like this where a meth lab is found in the city limits, where there are fires and explosions in populated areas.

“This isn’t like this is a rural farm house away from everybody else,” Windbigler added.

“All these neighbors are in close proximity to each other, we're just lucky it was limited to the garage, didn't spread to the home or other people’s homes,” Fire Investigator Ken Stouder said. “Even the toxic gases from the fire could have drifted over and hurt some people.”

Police say they found three types of prescription drugs in the home. Neither of the suspects had a prescription for them.

Meth Lab Explosion Burned 2 In Stone County

GALENA, Mo. -- Last Saturday, about 1:40 a.m., Stone County Emergency Services 911 received a phone call from the Shell Knob area reporting an explosion and fire at a single-family home. As Central Crossings Fire responded to the scene, a second caller reported a man who with chemical burns came to a neighboring home to report the fire. Based upon that information, Stone County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched along with the Fire Department to that home for a possible fire involving a methamphetamine laboratory.

When deputies and firefighters arrived, they smelled a chemical odor that they recognized as coming from a meth lab. The COMET Drug Task Force was then notified to help in the investigation and dismantling of the remains of what turned out to be a meth lab at the damaged home.

Three people were at the home. An ambulance took a 46-year-old man from Shell Knob to a hospital in Springfield for treatment of his burns that morning. An ambulance transferred a 40-year-old man from Shell Knob to a hospital in Springfield on Monday, also for treatment of burns. The third person is a 44-year-old woman from Shell Knob who is not injured. The Stone County prosecuting attorney is reviewing the reports for possible charges.

This is the second of two meth labs that have been located in Stone County within the last month. The first was in Branson West on June 22.

2 Arrested Following Meth Lab Explosion

By JON MILTIMORE / News Herald Writer
PANAMA CITY — Authorities have netted two suspects in connection with a weekend meth lab explosion that sent two men to the hospital with burns.

Stephanie Erickson, 31, and Eric Willerson, 30, were arrested Sunday on charges of child abuse and principle to manufacture of methamphetamine, according to a Bay County Sheriff’s Office release.

The explosion occurred at a 2508-A Scott Ave. mobile home late Friday while three adults and five children were inside. One man, Dennis R. Maynard, was observed by witnesses exiting the residence shortly after the explosion still ablaze. Maynard was treated at Gulf Coast Medical Center before being transported to Southeast Medical Center in Mobile, Ala. because of the severity of the burns, but before his transfer he reportedly told nurses Willerson was responsible for the explosion.

Maynard has not been charge with a crime.

Willerson’s arrest came shortly after authorities learned he was receiving medical treatment Sunday morning, when his mother, who took him to the hospital, contacted authorities. Following his release from the hospital, Willerson was taken into custody, along with Erickson, his girlfriend and the mother of the five children in the mobile home when the explosion took place, Sheriff’s Office officials said.

Sheriff’s Office officials said Erickson’s children were not present when she was arrested and are staying with family members, adding the Department of Children and Families has been contacted and would be conducting an investigation into their welfare.

The meth lab explosion is the second one in Bay County this month.

On July 8, Richard McPeek suffered serious burns over most of his body when he was trapped in a meth lab explosion at 2605 Grant Ave.

Officials are attributing the explosions to a meth production method called “shake and bake,” which involves placing ingredients and combustibles into a plastic container and shaking it to produce meth.

2 Arrested In Meth Lab Explosion In Waveland

HANCOCK COUNTY -- Two people are under arrest in connection with what police are calling a methamphetamine lab explosion that rendered eight families homeless Thursday night.

County jail records show that Mary Tarver, 30, and Jonathan O'Neal Alexander, 32, both were booked on a charge of manufacturing methamphetamine shortly before midnight Thursday. The arrests came after an apparent homemade meth lab exploded in the bathroom of a unit at Waveland Manor Apartments, off Waveland Avenue.

Albert Biehl, assistant manager of the apartments, said residents of eight units in the complex had to be moved out while the property undergoes hazardous material inspection. A shelter has been opened for the families by the American Red Cross at Lagniappe Church in Bay St. Louis.

“We're expecting about 20 people” to stay at the shelter indefinitely, said Raemona Seeman, director of development for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Chapter of the Red Cross.

Tarver and Alexander apparently were in the apartment where the explosion occurred. At least two police officers who responded to the call were taken to Hancock Medical Center for observation after being subjected to fumes, but their names have not yet been released.

Both suspects are being held under $50,000 bond. A jail official said Alexander was transported to Pearl River County Jail, while Tarver was still being held at the Hancock County holding facility on Longfellow Road this afternoon.

The Sun Herald will provide more details on this story in Saturday's edition.
