MEGA - Courses and Careers related to Drugs

I want to grow pharmy weed for a living

Im a second semester freshman (school starts back in a few weeks) at THE university of memphis. GO TIGERS!

Im not some burned out stoner, im smart, driven, ambitious, blah blah, i feel like i can literally do ANYTHING (law, chem, engineering, business, etc) but i predict that over time marijuana will be decriminalized and there will be a need for growers.

What would I have to major in to where I can grown medicinal marijuana in cali (and other states eventually) to sell to the clinics? eventually i would like to open my own clinic but first I want to be a grower.

I was thinking maybe a major in botany and a minor in business (im currently a business major but i can change easily).

My mom works for a major spine company in the city and she knows 2 people (1 a co workers husband, the other a daughter of someone she worked with) who "grow pharmaceutical marijuana"(her words). Im getting her to contact them to find out how to get my foot in the door, but im asking here because I figure someone may know how.

I want this to be my CAREER.

I think it's a bad idea to structure your college education around cultivating marijuana plants. Study academic interests that will get you a NORMAL CAREER that you would enjoy, and practice growing as a side hobby. That way you'll always have pot to fall back on, should traditional education not satisfy you.

it is a legitimate business.
Actually, it isn't. People do it and get away with it most of the time, but its still illegal. I live in Southern California- dispensaries and large grow ops are raided all the time (the law allows you to grow a maximum of 6 plants, not hundreds or thousands). Its not a legitimate business.

Also, you wouldn't need a college degree to do this. Its absolutely unnecessary. All you have to do is grow a lot of weed and sell it to a dispensary. And try not to get caught, because its illegal.

^^ Norcal has different rules in regard to quantity (every county does actually). Alot of people up here do it legit. At least in the eyes of the state of CA and their respective cities/ counties.

I was just about to suggest Oaksterdam University... I haven't attended and I never plan to grow (too labor-intensive), but think it would be fun to learn the craft. :) It's on the lifetime agenda.

JC: the dispensaries in Norcal get fucked with far less often than in Socal from what I hear from a friend who used to work at one that got badly robbed/raided. The culture up here is a lot different.

specialrelativity: you in the East Bay, too? Drop a PM sometime! :)

memphis: It's more about who you know than what you know, and decriminalization may or may not happen. I'd say stick with business, pick up a minor in botany. You would need your OWN medical reason to grow marijuana legally, or be the designated "caretaker" to grow on someone's behalf. If your location doesn't allow doctors to provide the permit, it's illegal for you to grow it... and there is no guarantee that marijuana laws will become more favorable in future. Botany is cool on its own. As the economy in the US goes further to crap and the environment gets polluted, there will be a need for botanists and agricultural/environmental scientists to sort out a way for a safe food supply. You may have to settle for organic gardening, but what you do in your own home... just don't make it public.

Man you are basically asking what degree would I need to sell drugs. Weed is still a shedule 1 drug so I dont think there are degrees needed to sell and grow bud in cali. I would stick to the buisness major that degree is what is needed to get a good job( I am also in college). Good luck man.

thank you for all the serious replies guy

i will take all of this into consideration

since you have gotten the responses you needed, i'm going to close this thread. if you would like it re-opened, please feel free to PM me. i don't want this thread to get out of hand.

No, you dont get it.

The generics are the same as the brands, the same.

The walmart thing is hurting pharmacy because they are such a huge company they can afford to have low prices on meds and can get the drugs cheaper because they are so big. Other pharmacies, especially indepedents, will suffer hugely. Pharmacy and healthcare is messed up, but not in the way you are saying, thats more radical conspiracy theory stuff, maybe you should lay off the grass ;)

Wal-mart is going lower than just selling cheap because they can buy cheap. They sell some of those $4 month supply scripts at a LOSS because the money they make just from getting those people in the store outweighs the losses on the medicine.

Which kills independent pharmacies, like you said, just worse.

Yeah they do... It also hurts the patient because when is the last time you saw a pharmacist from walmart, or a chain for that matter actually sit down and talk with a patient? you dont see it, all you see is a fast and short brush off. Pharmacies should be as individual as doctors, and I think you will see it happen. The independents, who are striving for the market share are going to push that edge. A huge business is in selling diabetic supplies, counseling diabetics on medicine, counseling AIDS patients on medicine. Because it is something that the chains cant do because they fill over 400 scripts per day. every day. And I think everyone who buys medicine should think about it before they go into a Walgreens or a CVS. Instead go down to the old neigborhood pharmacist. They will treat you better in the long run.

I overheard a couple people at school talking about the future of pharmacy and how much of it down the road is going to be more of an automated process, cutting down the need for pharmacists...

Pharmacy School

Hey, i figured homeless was an ok place for this, seeing as how i dont know where to put it.

Anyway, iIve really been thinking about getting a degree in pharmacology. My major is psychology right now, but more and more I'm leaning toward pharmacy. So, my first question is: Is there a difference in getting a "pharmacology" degree, and just "working" in a pharmacy, are you guys aware of some of the different aspects and jobs within the pharmaceutical industry?

second question: how long is schooling and what are you experiences with trying to get into this field? Was it fulfilling? Did you only work for big pharma?

Just curious questions i have for those who might have experienced this....thx!
